Consent for a ride thing

I had an idea today for a mean organised event that would suit riders of all levels. Basically what im thinking of is that we find an out-of-the-way piece of windy hilly road (like the hunuas), block it off to the general public, sweep the road clear of dirt, gravel and other shiat and let us bikers have a good go!! This way learners would get a good idea of the types of windies that they should expect to encounter and how to handle them and the experienced riders could have a mean go at the hills. And this would all be in a pretty safe environment free of traffic, gravel and with ambos nearby!! (not that we'd need ambos hopefully but more for them to have a good day out)

Here are the PROBLEMS:
1) What kinds of consent/s would i need to get this going??
2) Who would i need to talk to??
3) How much would all this cost??
4) How many riders would be keen??
5) Any ideas on good locations??

If anyone has any ideas or insight into this then please pm me or post up!! Any and all advice would be helpful and appreciated.

I can see the merit of the idea. Hopefully there will be people on here who have been involved in some closed road events like hill climbs and cycle races.

I also know that locals can get a bit disgruntled at these events closing of THEIR bit of road and not being allowed out of their own driveways etc. so if it goes ahead be prepared for the abuse that follows.:rofl:

I'm not from these parts so I have no idea what sort of governmental permission is needed nor the cost involved.

im going to go and have a chat with the guys down at the commerce department and law department at uni and hopefully they'll be able to offer some insight and get me in touch with the right people (fingers crossed).

And yea i also hope that a few of the fullas on kb might be able to help out with info too

Talk to the local city council, Manukau in this instance, and request a road closure. They will probably treat it as a special event and require insurance cover, public notification and obviously you paying the costs for the administration etc.
Be cheaper to hire Pukekohe racetrack for the day.

Sorry to throw such a good idea into the gutter but -

Think of public liability, if someone gets hurt/injured you 'could' be held liable and who would pay for damages to property? You can put a disclaimer/indemnity get people who to sign it but you still got ACC/Police and all the other Govt Depts wanting to take someone for a skate. You gotta ask yourself - is it worth it?

(Best thing you could do is organise something in a controlled area, they are usually called "Track Days" - but it didn't hear that from me ;))

I helped organise and was Clerk of the Course at a number of closed-road sprints and hillclimbs, years ago now, but I have a pretty clear idea of what is needed.

You are best to check out with all of the locals on your chosen piece of road (or who could use it) first - otherwise you get the Council go-ahead to apply for a road closure, you apply, then the Council advertises as it is required to do by law, then all the locals object, and you're way behind.

Try to find a stretch of road that has no houses on it and alternative ways for people living on either side of the stretch to get anywhere and everywhere.

well i first posted it up here thinking that i could get some feedback but then i realised that id get WAAAAAAY better info if i posted it up on the meetings and events section as it gets a SHITLOAD more views and has a lot more experienced members in it than our meger little club so i posted it up there too!!

I'd advise that you get them along to RRRS one weekend, then discuss with someone like The Stranger, and organise a mentor's ride in the following weeks. That way the learners and newbies will learn all the skills that will keep them safe and make them more confident, and then with the help of an experienced group of riders they can get the knowledge fed to them face-to-face... saves a lot of hassle, gives more benefit and is far more practical than asking for a blat on a closed public road.

I work for the ARC. Auckland Regional Transport Authority "ARTA" who work above us in the building (Part of the ARC) - they might be a good contact for you to find any information out. Unfortunately I would not know who to contact yet as I have only really just started working there.

Ok so far what ive gotten is that FIRST i need consent from local councils, who will then need me to get permission from the locals. So what infact i need to do is find a secluded piece of windies and get permission before i do ANYTHING. As it has been pointed out by a few people there's no point in getting council approval and then being voted out by locals.

Ok ill check out some maps and stuff for any windies that seem feasible and then go check em out. Any particular places people would like me to check out?? Any suggestions from the experienced riders as to what roads may be good spots?? (it would save me having to go check em out)

Again if ANYBODY thinks or feels that im going about this the wrong way or has suggestions of what else i could do initially then please PLEASE let me know!! All advice will be taken seriously!! I can't emphasise enough this point enough!!!

Ive never done anything like this before (especially of this magnitude) so yea.

have done a few runs since i last posted and so far the best road seems to be oakleigh rd off sh12....bout 30kms of windies and from memory there didnt seem to be too many houses along there or much traffic.....

will go have a chat with the locals there after exams to see if they would mind letting us use the road for the runs....still a while to go though so yea
