View Full Version : 250 Newbie Noob ride Sat 11/8/07

Okay, I'm planning a nice little easy pootle for new 250 riders. This will be a nice little journey for those getting to know their bikes a little better.
More competent riders and those on bigger bikes will find this trip a mite boring! But plenty interesting enough for newbies
Since I'm organising this ride for the new riders, I'll be doing my usual spiels and teacher type blah blah. So if you have flashbacks of being back in a classroom ... HTFU! :stoogie:
PM please with details and a little brief about your riding experience so far!

For those that have to ask where the ride is going and when and how far etc etc...
The above is your key.

**breakaway remembers the last 250 ride
My "summer gloves" (gloves with vents for summer) got soggy 1hr into the ride. Luckily some high speed riding sorted that out. I had my other winter gloves in the boot, but wanted to continue with the summer gloves as the winter gloves feel a whole lot clumsier.

I did exactly the same thing. Sitting a BP I'm thinking to myself "sweet.. good thing I wore my summer gloves" and about 10 mins later I was thinking "why the hell did I leave my winter gloves under the seat???" Too late then as my hands were all wet anyway.
Even better was wearing the wet gloves all day to have them dry out just in time for that shower at the end. Damn that murphy fulla haha.

Good ride, enjoyed the company and the size of the group.
Shame the only fishies caught were chocolate from the dairy! Saw a seal in the bay, cool - wildlife viewing and a bike ride, what more could I ask for.
Guy at the dairy warned us about the wild goats on the roads round there (heads up to anyone riding out that way). On the way back I counted 3 herds of the blighters (had just crossed from the looks of things).
Big thanks to Justin for organising and keeping the group together and well briefed. Thanks to Donor and Jeaves for a great day too - and great chatting with you other fellas (shit I'm bad at remembering names!). I remember faces mind - see you out there again.

Agreed, it was a lovely day for a ride.
However, it was ruined in a few ways for me personally.
Dodgy overtaking.
Excessive speed cornering.
Unnecessary displays of bravado and bollocks.
Blatant disregard of sensible biking gear requirements.
Riding beyond capabilities for riders of lesser ability.
Playing chicken with parked vehicles.
Dragging toes of SNEAKERS at 100kph.
I'll not be joining organised group rides for a while unless they are organised by myself, and will be invite by PM only.
Twice in 2 weeks I have had to scrape people up after basic and silly bins.
I don't get paid to do this shit on my own time, and while I have no issue in helping, it pisses me off that in 90% of cases it is completely avoidable.
Other than that, thanks to GI for the ride, Chickadee for the awesome job of TEC/Camp Mother, and to all those tht helped dragging a sick and twisted bike up a bank.

I can only hope he learns from this incident. Dude if ur reading, don't take what all of us have said lightly... biking is dangerous, I wasn't there so I don't know what happened BUT I know this .. u don't have to be doing 200 round a corner to have fun. try taking a 30 corner at 55 and being smooth, lean more... if u bin it ul get hurt no doubt but at least u won't be another statistic. follow a more capable riders line instead of taking the lead... don't be afraid to rock up to the group waiting at the turnoffs last, hell I've been riding 7 years and I still do it if I'm with more capable riders than myself. Bring ur bike and urself bak home to ur parents in one piece and u can call it a successful ride.
On another note, this sorta shit can happen to the best of us as weve all seen so I'm not going to judge u or anyone else who happens to bin, and I hope u won't if I do.

Actually Zapf, I like the idea of a Club 250 RRRS course. I'd be a starter for attending.
I have progressed in my 9 months of riding to what I would say is a 'good' rider, but I am largely self taught, and have been gleaning snippets of useful information from other 'experienced' riders.
It would be good to get some more formal learning under my belt.
Never too proud to admit I need a learning...

It's a shame I missed the ride (the weather forecast was terrible!), but from your description, Donor, it sounds like it was a little hairy so missing it wasn't so bad.
The best rides I've been on have been 2, 3 or as much as 4 people. The one where we ended up with just me, GiJoe1313 and Chisanga was a good one. In the small group there was no feeling that we had to `perform' or push ourselves too much, we just rode at our own speed and slowed down regularly so we all re-grouped.
Ixion always says big group rides worry him somewhat, and I sort of understand what he means. It's like with your mates -- one on one, or in a group of three everybody acts fairly sensibly. Once a whole bunch of you gets together, a sort of mob-mentality takes over and you find yourself doing/saying things you normally wouldn't. I think this part of the characteristics of males carries over to how we ride our bikes.

The weather was fine, got dark twice while we were out there but it never really threatened rain.
It was the wind that got us, but it didn't really become too much of an issue until we hit the motorway at Drury, by then the ride was pretty much done and dusted.

Any good organised ride will always wait for the slower riders. Learner and 250 riders should never feel pressured to ride beyond their level. Said this many a time, but the newer riders always think they have to keep up (hence the 250 rides etc)
The number of bins that can be attributed to riders pushing to keep up, and/or riding beyond their skill is rather large.
The one I often say to those riders is, lets say the fast guy is riding at 5/10's, and a corner catches him off guard. He has plenty left in reserve to handle it (and skill). You're riding at 10/10's (insanely stupid on public roads), have the same issue... you have nothing in reserve, to cope.
Additionally, faster guys screw up, it happens. If one crashes in front of you (as has happened) because he was going too fast and you're struggling to try and keep up, do you think you have any chance of making the corner?
Always ride within your skill. I'm happy to hold up rides to wait for the last few, than pick bikes up out of ditches.

Righto, the day started well - I was at the BP and waited for the attendees to gather. Went over and discussed general biking things and found little things like oil on tyre (), fuel leaking from overflow...the usual things
The briefing was in my usual teacherese speak, just enjoying the ride, learning about your machine and putting into practice road skills in a real environment.
zeocen and I had already pre-scouted out the route a day or so beforehand to check it over. Nice conditions, few blind corners, and a few technical curves which bikers all love as they become more proficient.
Took our time getting to the ride by navigating through the back streets before heading off proper.
At this stage, everyone was behaving themselves, riding in proper formation and being responsible. On through at Tuakau, we had another stop and thats when I let a group go ahead and said we would meet them at the agreed location.
Concentrating on the smaller group at hand, we took our time and only really got up to 100kph on a nice long straight before resuming tootling speeds. It's not a race, the route isn't long ... just a nice way for newbies to stretch their skills and enjoy the experience safely.
Well, turned up, did some fishing, drank some ginger beers and nattered a while. I went around and checked people were okay, and dangled a line to feed some fishes.
A great day up to then!
Once again, focussing on the newbie noobs - just did the same thing. Got those who wanted to ride closer to the open road limit to go first and thats when things went pear-shaped
Our second group had barely started before I saw bikes parked on the side of the road and riders waving. :shit:
Anyhow, just as well I had did my usual teachery prep and studied all the things I needed to do on rides. Swung into Plan B.
Got people to park safely, organised Chickadee and others to make sure oncoming traffic were aware of situation. Big, big relief when breakaway was sitting up with Donor talking charge of him. We haul him up. Others down on bike to ensure hazard to themselves and environment minimised.
No POL leaks (Petrol, Oil, Lubricant). Cellphones produced, I got Jeaves to document on my digital camera and I was organising what needed to get done ... safely. End result - everyone got back home safely after that.
I'm not too sure what happened, but from what I gleaned - some overtaking was commented on by locals, a laddish factor in some riders and of course the usual ill prescribed factors (speed, riding outside of licence class).
After pulling up the bike, had the incongruous sight of another of the group trying to do a stoppie or the appearance of one. :nono: I'll take your excuse that the "brakes were twitchy" once.
By this stage, three of our number departed - they were the core that this ride was aimed at and I just gave them the basic advice that they were riding fine - just keep the speed down to what they were comfortable at and take their time!
End of the day, McJim does what he normally does and is a very committed person to the biker community, bairns in tow, he turns up with u-haulit trailer and gets breakaway back.
Well done those newbie riders who got what they were out of the ride, some people need to learn a lesson in pulling in their heads so ego does not exceed ability. Excellent response from local community and big-ups to two locals (one was a biker and of course, knew the score). A big fat not achieved goes to some of the daft advice and behaviour after bike was pulled up and on the way home.
"You can still ride this." NO!
Putting feet on motorway on ride back NO!
Aiming at a parked van in Pukekohe and "swerving" out to miss it closely. NO! :nono:
By your actions you shall be known. Overall a great day marred by some silliness, newbie learners ashened face - but at least they got to see what happens when it all goes wrong and that there is support and a plan in place. At least half the group got what the day was about - learning to ride safely in a supportive environment. Peace out.

Righto ... piccie time!
Nice day for a bike ride all things considered! The wind always makes life interesting so it was good for newbie riders to experience that.

Heheh, I'm sure Chickadee must have put the :shit: in some of the following cagers (Bike cop tailing bikers ahead!?)
And a few more photos... actually she was getting her line ready and Jeaves, always fascinated by cabling/wiriing had to check it out!

Meah, that's just Jeaves getting done for soliciting again.
Case of having to, with the single fuel pump of 91 out there being whored at $1.78 a litre, means you best top up before ya go!

Okay, this is after the dairy about three or four corners away. Goes into a 70 zone. Excellent photo work from Jeaves as I got him to document the process.

The roads were clear, no gravel on the road proper and clear visibility all the way through.
Was this incident avoidable?
Did a pack mentality contribute?
Riding a larger spec machine part of the equation?
Any other possible riding behaviour involved?
Target fixation?
Headspace in the right frame?
Rhetorical questions I suspect...
And yes EJ, fark it was a long, long way down... with some big, big boulders... and a tide rolling in...

And on an end note, there was fishing involved!
I fed sausage meat to the sprats and nibblers, Chickadee did luncheon ... and in the end, it turns out Choco fish was caught and eaten raw! Oh! The humanity of it all!
I was jealous 'cause I didn't catch one ... mebbe I should have brought Pikachu cause he could've catched them all? :innocent:

So, I've been there, done that ... 'cept this time McJim ain't riding slowly by looking into the undergrowth at Punga trees.
He shouldna nae worry aboot it... he knows once an Asian has gone done, he'll be back up in half hour again! :innocent:
And no, I wasn't trying to keep up with a Scotsman on a VTR ... everyone knows that in the hills, Scotsman reign supreme!

Well yeah, I guess I did... it was take it to the gutter and laugh, or flog the bike and forget riding because I can't be fucked watching people try and kill themselves anymore.
So send the servants of Godwins I say... it means little to me...

Is that akin to rolling up little barrels of death in ground up vegetable matter and causing a combustion of deleterious byproducts in twin fleshy receptacles of atmosphere processing units?

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>It's worth noting that, as quoted in TJF, that `there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful. Godwin himself has discussed the subject (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.10/godwin.if_pr.html).'
Donor -- come and ride with the Super-Nanas sometime. We trade in our fancy leathers for flabby cordura, and knee-down chic for tyre-saving ponderousness :innocent:

We had a young fulla on a 250 came up to me yesterday (not a KBer) and asked if we were a club?...and could he join us for the ride?.. answers were No! and Hell Yeah. There were 3 Busa's an R6 GSXR 600 and a Thou, a couple of Triumphs and a SV 650. The 250 (at the first stop) said he was over doing it trying to keep up with faster guys. Senior memeber told him ''dont do that, ride your own ride''...then to his credit....He did! Mature man that lad, good head on his shoulders, he stuck right behind me the rest of the day..well, me and a Busa and the SV...Both Tide and Donor have been on one of my rides...down south Waikato...many bikes, not one! incident, it can be done...

Hahaha i wondered where he came from ........... he stayed on my arse most of the time, mind you that doesn't mean anything as i ride like a nana.
After riding with the guys & gals on Archer's ride yesterday i also highly recommend bike 2 bike coms, not only to you get cop and road condition warnings from the lead bike but it also makes it eaiser to over take cages in the twisty stuff cause the lead rider is telling you that the road is clear ahead so you can overtake on blind corner ( of cause you wouldn't do this if you were way behind the lead rider).
I think it would be benificial if newer riders had a cheep coms set up that they could use when on group rides mainly so that they can listen to the more experanced riders warning about changing road conditions.
