A new toy arrived by UPS last night.

I ordered it a while ago, as a present for someone who left a somewhat more metaphorical knife in my heart immediately thereafter.

My collection of pocket folders has, therefore, just grown by one.

It's a Kershaw Rainbow Leek. Handle and blade of Sandvik (http://www.sandvik.com/) 13C26, plated with titanium oxide. I've always had a soft spot for 'rainbow' knives made this way, and finally I own one!

Ken Onion's 'assisted opening' design (activated by pressure on the small knurled knob at the top of the handle) is gorgeous in its simplicity and effectiveness. This is the fastest-opening knife I've tried yet.

I'm surprised, in fact, that the sprung action doesn't qualify it as an auto ('switchblade'). I had no difficulty importing it. Perhaps the fact that the blade rotates out of the handle rather than springing straight forward is the differentiator?

As you can see below, that highside on SH16 two weeks ago means that I won't be using it left-handed for a while!

I don't plan on carrying this one, though - it's not a boy's knife. It will live in its pouch in a drawer, awaiting a worthy bearer. It will, however, be granted the usual baptism in goat's blood in a couple of week's time alongside my new Norinco M305 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M14).

:Punk:

I'm quite tempted to betray my Spyderco loyalties and add a Kershaw Storm (http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=98) to my collection very shortly, which definitely will be on the daily carry rotation. Any other Kershaw fans out there on KB?

Very nice indeed! Brent Sandow in Auckland does some very nice folders too, either as a commission or from stock. See:www.brentsandowknives.com.

I commissioned him to make me a Damascus Steel carving knife last year, post: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=37146. Cost me nearly $900, but the work that goes into layering a Damascus blade is phenomenal. Now a family heirloom.

Great to see that you appreciate fine workmanship.:first:

Very pretty! [Is that the right word to describe a knife?]
If you were to call that a flick-knife as opposed to a switchblade, then that would be illegal I think.
However, it is obviously not a street thug weapon so who knows?

Scandalous hussy!

Don't worry, I'll be sure to bring it along on my next ride up north for you to have a play with.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention in my original post that the Rainbow Leek won Blade Magazine's 'Overall Knife of the Year' award when the design was released in 2002. It feels lovely in the hand. I'd say it'd be a great general-use cutter, although I'd never use it for that; Kershaw make Leeks with other handle and blade materials for such pedestrian purposes.

jrandom
10th August 2007, 19:50
Actually, I quite like the Svord knives. The steel's terrible for tarnishing quickly when exposed to salt or acid, but they take an edge well, and look charmingly rustic. Plus it's always nice to have a knife made by someone relatively local.

I have a Svord Peasant:

<img src="http://www.svord.com/images/knives/PK-500x.gif"/>

and I plan on picking up the '6.5" Bowie' shortly:

<img src="http://www.svord.com/images/knives/280B-500x.gif"/>

I won't own a Von Tempsky. It's basically a machete; it just doesn't 'grab' me. I only own knives that I like. It's hard to define what does it for me, but I know it when I see it...

The plain vanilla Ken Onion Kershaw blades don't hold a great edge. My Spyderco Delicia was much better (until I lost it). They ae a neat knife tho.
I used to make a lot of knives. The forgin is ok, but I don't have the patience for the polishing these days.

My knives get used regularly for hunting.

And, for what it's worth, once this fucking cast's off I'll be putting some proper time and effort into making sure I don't need a weapon...

jrandom

That's not a knife - it's a frikkin' waste of time.

You're right, it's not a knife - it's a short chunky machete. I've had a play with one, and they'd work pretty well for cutting down bamboo, splitting kindling or doing double duty as a butcher's cleaver.

I don't usually engage in any of the above, though, so I don't want one.

And I do, in fact, use a knife every day. The company I work for does a lot of 3D prototyping for engineering firms, and my knives get a regular workout on resin support material for prototype builds, not to mention cutting boxes, packing tape and baguettes most mornings.

I've also been most grateful to have a knife on me when replacing a punctured bicycle tube - it was the only tool that could easily dig out the glass that'd speared through the middle of the tyre.

And one never know when one will need to trim off a piece of duct tape from the roll in one's tankbag.

The idea of ever having to use a pocket knife as a weapon is just as unpleasant as the idea of swinging a tyre iron at a person's head.

If we're going to talk about appreciating fine workmanship in tools, I need to get a friend to forward me a link to a set of damascus steel woodworking chisels he's just ordered for a vast sum of money. They give me the horn.
