breakaway

So I was going around a corner, running just a tad wide. I thought i was sweet, until I hit a patch of gravel on the side of the road (at this point I was about a foot from going off the road), and my front gave. I realised it was all going south, and just got clear of the bike. I came to rest in some bushes.
I'm glad I didn't go down onto the rocks.

Just realised if it wasn't for Glaswegians your bike would be under water what with the tide coming in and all.
A Glasgow fella pulls it back up onto the road and a Glasgow fella comes and brings it back to Auckland.
You're lucky Glasgow exports all these people to New Zealand! :rofl:

Sorry to hear this dude, but in a way i've been expecting it.
Not to put you down in anyway, but considering that you're on your learners with little experience i dont think it's smart for you to be on a 400. Get yourself healed up, and get booked in on RRRS and learn what you need to know to help save this from happening. After reading your posts on the other thread you need to do a number of things... get a bike you are actually suited too, slow down, stop trying to ride fast and start riding within your limits. You'll become roadkill in no time if you dont. Also, the fact that your bike took a drop like that probably means the frame is fucked, even if you can't tell... i wouldn't be riding it again too soon unless it's been to an engineer to be checked.
Hope your injuries heal quick.

S'funny... I sent a PM saying pretty much that...
I guess I'm not as boring and nana-ish as I thought!
We've seen too many bins, too many injuries and though I don't want to say it, too many dead riders of late.
To the general public, they're statistics, but to the biker community they're friends, mates, comrades on two wheels and damned if we want to see anyone hurt, maimed or removed from the mortal coil.
Ride slow, ride conservative, ride less CCs than seems 'cool' - let the peers mock you and pour scorn - who fucking cares? Obviously not anyone that would seek to prevent you becoming a red stain on the road.
On the positive, full marks for you being ATGATT compliant, you're a walking talking testimony that good gear WORKS!

Glad to say I've not been witness to a bike fatality first hand and hope never to be. Our mate that hit a cow a while back was a lucky b*stard and I think you're in that category also. I agree! All I hope is that he realises just how lucky he has been. If it is true he has a learners on a 400 then he is luckier than lucky!
Points of lucky-
He lost control and threw the bike off the road, but he is in tact, a bit sore no doubt, but ok.
He had mates with him (probably shocked to see what happened) to make sure he was ok.
Those mates helped him retrieve his bike from the beach.
He had mates with cell phones that could call for help.
The people he called came to his assistance.
He was not permanently damaged.
He did not damamge other peoples property, being uninsured sucks when that happens...
So all in all one lucky young man :yes:

Bit of trivia from the Trailer Hire guy. Apparently that very trailer gets hired by one of the Tamaki Brothers for towing his HD around. (Obviously when he's going somewhere with more stuff than he can fit on the back of the bike - I am not suggesting for a moment that HDs need to be towed coz of reliability issues...FFS I ride a Ducati so I can't really talk).
So you can say your bike has been towed by the same trailer as a Tamaki Harley.:Punk:

Sucks to hear about your crash dude. Hell im still on my 250 and I've been round the coro loop twice and never crashed, i keep up with other riders, one in fact was riding a 900 hornet.
I don't think Im a perfect rider, and i know ive reached my limits (or my cruisers height limit) but I've never crashed. I'm not gonna pick on you, but i think spending time on a 250 or less is a wise choice, definetly not the most exciting one, but it sure has taught me a thing or two about taking corners and overtaking etc...
Any who, good luck with your recovery and paying for your bike to get fixed with no insurance.

Thanks for the advice guys. I deserve the flames.
It was my own douchebaggery that caused that bin. I has just hit home that this could have happened when I was alone, and / or I could have ended up on those rocks.
Reason I bought the 400 was it was shit cheap. I could never afford the 250 version. After doing research, I found that the CBR400RR only put out 10hp more than the CBR250RR. So I came to the conclusion that it wasn't that big a step up and I'd be alright.
Thanks again guys for all the help and advice. Especially McJim and Donor. Important thing is, I've learned my lesson.

The one that gets me is when you warn a rider of how much a plonker ,you and others have noticed him riding like, and how passing more experienced local riders on the wet over blind crests and corners is a silly idea you get red repped and moaned at in threads. 20Ft tall Bullet Proof Carl Fogartys seem to exist all over the place.
Hence the formation of smaller groups within KB of those who trust each other.

Amit,
I haven’t been signing into KB as much recently so have just learned of your bin. I am very glad that you came through and have little doubt that you will have learnt a great deal.
In some ways I knew this would happen, not because you had bought the CBR (although I wasn’t exactly ecstatic when I heard) but because everyone I know has dropped their bike at some point, some more seriously than others. :yes:
The thing that I would take out of this is that in order to improve your skills you need to ride and you need to listen to those that have ridden for a long time. Put all of that into practise and you will be better for it.
That said, I am glad to see that you are out there and doing it and with a great bunch of people as well. Stick with those guys and I am sure your skills will steadily improve. In fact I am kind of impressed that you have come so far in such a short amount of time. SH22 group ride is on another planet compared with the local carpark. :Punk:
In the interim I would strongly suggest that you take R6kid’s advice and check the frame, I would bet his left one that you could have a problem. :yes:

what size tires are they?
Try some P Strada's they are really good for the dry and wet.

I had pirelli strada's and thought they were fucking useless for the wet, infact, I would go as far to say that they were the worse than Shinko's.
Now I have Avon roadrider/roadrunner's and haven't had one single worrying moment in the wet. For a fraction of the price too.

The guys at cycletreads reckon my rear tyre is real good, but the front is shithouse.

I'll check and report back later.

I'd read heaps of great stuff about the Avon's and I love them. Million times better than the kenda front and whatever rear tyres I had before.
They're great tyres for the money and anything more is probably overkill on a smaller bike.

No worries. I'm just waiting on a bunch of stuff to show up, and then needs to be bolted on. I'm waiting on the following:
- Tail light assembly
- Rear panels (In gold color :sick:)
- Screen (Coming from Hong Kong so may be a while)
What I need:
- Left side switch block so I can actually turn on my headlights. ATM I can only turn on my gauge lights and tail lights and indicate.
<img src="http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/8300/dsc00305gu5.jpg"/>
- Put tail light & subframe in when it arrives
<img src="http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/5320/dsc00301ou4.jpg"/>
- Need to unbend bracket that holds gauges (its bent inwards and a little to the left)
<img src="http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/1217/dsc00304dl4.jpg"/>
- Need to weld bracket that holds mirror back together then get right mirror.
<img src="http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/9018/dsc00308zc9.jpg"/>
- Somehow unbend pillion seat things so it sits properly when locked
<img src="http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/8122/dsc00309jo5.jpg"/>
- Then fix fairings & tank, and probably do some headlight alignment.
<img src="http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/1990/dsc00302aq6.jpg"/>
<img src="http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/787/dsc00303sw2.jpg"/>
The most surprising part is that the can isn't damaged. I'm amazed.
The front (and side) fairing is fiberglass, and according to certain people, I can fix it up with a 'fiberglassing kit from repco'. Whatever that is.
westie
18th August 2007, 19:27
Na dont bother with the repco fibreglass kit. Just bring your fairings round and we can fix them no worries. Local panel beater should be able to weld mirror bracket.
All else a hammer should do the job for bending unless someone has some gear to do it?
Oh and what was the front end off again? I have some suzuki switch blocks etc if they fit. I think I remember you say a suzuki rg?

Yeah. Everyone thought I was a bit too happy about it. Truth is, I'm not happy about my bike, but I am pretty happy about how I crashed it, considering I could have ended up on those rocks with a broken back. Instead, I walked away with sore joints and a little scratch on my elbow.
If that isn't reason to be a bit happy, I don't know what is.
Westie - PM'd. Cheers for the offer.

Nah, didn't take pain relief, except panadols for two or three days after the crash when pain was real bad.

Now to get some undercoat on, and buy a screen brace bracket. These are proving difficult to find.
So far I've bought
- Subframe - $20
- Rear (Side Fairing) Panels - $50
- Tail Light - $20
- Tinted Screen (New) - $32
Need the following
- Bracket that holds gauges
- Bracket that holds mirrors in place (screen brace)
- Right side mirror
And then I have to paint :shutup:
I'm going to see if I can weld my bracket back together. The rod in the middle snapped in half when the right mirror hit the ground:
<img src="http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/8370/dsc00308ob2.jpg"/>
Also Gotta bend the seat lock thingers back somehow:

She's running sweet though. Had a small issue with a vampire clip which we put in when we attached the Steel Mate, so the alarm's been taken out for the time being. About that - have you got the wiring diagram for the Steel Mate? Could you PM it?

True that. Steel mate gave me such peace of mind. Now I'm back to being super paranoid till I get my auto sparky mate to show me how to wire it in.
Apparently what we did during installation was a bad idea - cutting the ignition (kill switch etc). Depending on how it is done, this means that if one of the connections goes botched, bike will just stop (Don't want that to happen when you're leaned over in a corner right next to a 10 foot drop :calm: )
Just recently my bike stopped working, turned out one of the vampire clips was a bit shakey, fortunately this happened when I was about to take off for uni in my garage. Took me half a day to figure out what was wrong with it. Turns out the main 12V wire into the ignition barrel was shagged due to the vampire clips cutting it in half.
I've pm'd (and TXTed) ya Gijoe1313 :yes:

or even worse, when you're running wide on the coro loop (as you obviously have a propensity for) and the engine stops, and i'm coming around said blind corner in my dodge ram with the boat on the back...
'did you feel that bump dear?'
'yeah - the potholes up here just get worse and worse - i just don't know what our $5000 in rates gets spent on'
