Was hoping I'd never have to post this...but I came off my bike this morning. The car in front of me rear ended the car in front of him, and when I braked I lost the rear in the wet and went for a slide along the road. Was far enough back that i didn't hit the car in front, and thankfully the car behind me had left plenty of space too.
Thanks to the nice guys who picked my bike up and put it on the side of the motorway. I haven't had much of a look at the bike yet, it's at WMCC and is yet to be assessed. I went for a ride in the ambulance to the Hutt. Broke my wrist and am going to have some very impressive bruises down my left leg. Could have been so much worse. Out of action for a wee while, which is a shame because I was about to sit my full in 2 weeks! Bummer!
Just one of those things...

Bugger about the off AH, and about the broken wrist too.
Glad to hear you are doing well in spite of the injuries, the gear did it's job pretty good by the sound of it.
Take good care of yourself.

Hey everyone,
Well - my left leg swelled to balloon-like proportions yesterday and got x-rayed when I went back to see the orthopedic surgeon yesterday. Lucky for me, looks like only soft tissue damage. Phew!! It has decreased in size quit a bit overnight and is several different shades of blue. Smurf leg... guess that's what sliding along the road with a GN on top of you will do!
Wrist is in plaster, they still don't know if I've ruptured a ligament in it as well - have to start healing the break first. Gotta go back next week to get a tighter cast once the swelling goes down. Fun times!
As for the trusty steed, still haven't seen it - WMCC is waiting for pricing on some bits so I don't know the damage yet.
Should be back to work tomorrow - resting the leg up today to keep it looking more like a leg and less like a sausage.
Big thanks to everyone who has offered help if/when it's needed. KBers are an awesome bunch. Thanks too to the radiology dept and fracture clinic at Hutt hospital - they have been really great.
Feeling pretty lucky - could have come out much worse in rush hour traffic.

Oh bugger - that's not a good way to get a day off work. Couldn't you said your grannie had died for the fourth time ?
I've read elsewhere on KB that the stock tyres on your bike are hopeless - which tyres were you on?
Heal quick, and give the arnica a go. It's great stuff for bruising - really seems to make a difference.

Haven't had the official word from the assessor, but WMCC called me to say that the parts + labour cost of repair is $5000! Sounds like the bike will be a write off - bye bye my lovely GN!
Still haven't seen it, but will try and get there to see for myself tomorrow or Friday.
On the plus side, I was able to cancel my full test to be rescheduled at a later date without losing my payment - nice one LTSA! The fee is just held on the system until I re-schedule...

Yeah, full cover - only bummer is I was 2 weeks off sitting my full, so I have an extra $500 excess because still on my restricted... argh!
Oh well - it really could have been a lot worse, coming off in rush hour traffic, so I'm not gonna complain too loud!!

As you said it could have been a lot worse. Great you get to live to tell the tale.
On the plus side if you can borrow a bike to do your full on you can take your pick of replacement bikes above 250cc and get some value for money with that payout.
Saves on trade-in/trademe too.
Always look on the bright.........

Ah poos! Im sure once you're up and well that someone could lend you their bike... Mybe you could book the test for a couple of weeks or so after your cast is due off?.. That way you'll be ready to go. Maybe you could even start looking for a new "bigger" bike while you're incapacitated? You're very right it could ALWAYS be worse! Good onya for being positive! :sunny:

Ouch, sounds like Monday was the day for it (a workmate of mine came off on the Wellington motorway Monday morning)
I was far to busy puking my guts out with food poisoning to be riding so missed out on all the bad luck on the roads.
Hope you get well soon, we should be at the end of all this bad weather soon :)

UPDATE:
Well, I'm starting to feel better and my bruising is developing nicely. I showed my leg to my 4 year old niece today and she said "Purple is my favourite colour!" So I asked her which of the purples on my leg she liked the best - answer - the reddy purple on my calf. Gosh, kids are cute!
Haven't had official word on my bike - I think the assessor was going to look at it towards the end of last week. I went and had a look at it myself on Thuursday and it didn't look that bad, but the problem is that so many parts have scrapes and need to be replaced that the cost mounts up. Pete from WMCC has already said to let him know when I'd like to use their 250 loaner to do my full - thanks Pete!
Took my jacket and helmet into my insurance company and they are going to replace both. Nice one - relatively painless as the person I spoke to on the 0800 number on Monday had already forwarded the details to the branch near my work.
So - am definitely going to get back on a bike when I'm able. I'd been planning on sticking with the GN even after my full, because it's such a great little commuter bike, but might as well upgrade now. Bike shopping will be fun! Too bad I just got a new chain and sprockets 3 weeks ago, though... oh well...
Thanks to everyone who has offered assistance - I really appreciate it.

perhaps dont panic and remember that that driveway or around the car are options.

I like your attitude, when you get back on your bike find a suitable wee layby somewhere and go through the situation in your mind and act it out again to learn and practice where you went wrong.
Practice in your mind where your escape route would/could have been, it will all come to you in the end and you have it stamped into your memory and will always ride defensively, automatically.
Good luck for your future riding, you sound like a sensible, gutsy girl. Cheers John.
