View Full Version : Safety of clip-ons?

As I said in the other thread I recently bought a 95 Ducati 600SS which had different clip ons to raise the riding position slightly.

I took it into wellington motorcycles today to get the fork oil replaced which went fine but the bill came back with the comment:

Note: Handle bars are of very poor design & construction, not safe to use on the road.

Well obviously I cant leave them like that. I like the position of the raised bars but if I have to go back to the dropped ones I will. The bike came with the original bars however theyre more slip ons than clip ons and it looks like the last owner couldnt be bothered removing the top clamp to get them off so theyre abit bent (see pic). I could straighten them easy enough but Id rather not if theyre not going to be safe?

From my research I think I need 50mm ones. Though with the notorious SS lack of steering lock Id imagine that cuts down my choices abit?

These look reasonable but as theyre for a later SS anyone know whether theyd fit?

I prefer the raised bars to these but are these a worse bar to justify being so much cheaper, or is it just the usual cheaper to import yourself thing? Also the same not knowing if theyll fit issue.

Any Comments from people who know these things (as obviously I dont)

Think Ill go talk to Motomart tomorrow.

does a monster top triple fit?? maybe some low flats could be good?

Contact Steve at F1 Engineering in Hamilton. He manufactures top quality parts and components for motorcycles. He made a set of raised clip ons for my CBR over a year ago and they worked a treat for me. Quality or Safety has never been an issue.

Top idea that, if it works it opens up a huge choice of bends at realtively low cost.

Woodcraft gear is generally pretty nice. You mentioned that you like the risen ones? Have a look around for LSL offset match clipons on the web, or perhaps Helibars or Convertibars. Those last two are adjustable, so you can have the best of both worlds (within reason, given brake lines/throttle cable/wiring lengths).

Just to bring this back from the dead I thought Id up date how I fixed it given I finally put the new bars on.

I got a set of Tommaselli adjustable alloy clip ons. Can adjust them just about every possible way, which is handy as the confines I had to work with greatly restrict where they can sit.

Heres some pics of the old bars on the bike. How they fit (I discovered they were for smaller forks than 50mm so how they are in the photo is how they were spead to fit. A lineup of the original bars, the ones I took off and the new ones. And the finished product (minus fairings and the gap on the left bar is for the choke switch if it ever arrives at Motormart).

Those were truely awful looking bars. They look like some muppet farmer bodged them up out of tractor leavings. :bash:
Your new bars look way classy.

Glad you got that sorted, I was critical of the old bars, I have some Toms like the new ones for my project bike & they were great to be able to adjust, just make sure you torque them up enough.

Yeah the person that made those deserves to be put away in jail for a long time or made to ride a Suzuki.
