If you could guarentee no cops and traffic then it would be all on. There is some fairly tight stuff in the middle there so the sweepers would have to be pushing it. Worth a crack you reckon?

Did you order a pack - I've an old beat up one that's big enough to store a body in (nuthing in it at the mo though).
Also, I've still got that sheepskin that fits and RF and if your RF has 2 little lugs under the swingarm I've also got a race stand my old man made - real handy...
42psi sounds maybe a bit much for the RF (wracking brain). I think it was 36 for the front but may have been slightly higher for the rear if carrying an extra body (pack or seat). I know Bandits are 36 front & rear even with pillion.

Sheepskin Sales (http://www.sheepskins.co.nz/) in Otaki will custom make 'em while you wait (pays to tell him you're coming though). Does an awesome job too. Have bought a couple off him, price $130-160.

What a marvelous day for riding! Heading off soon, think we'll take Vinegar Hill then straight up the line to show Sarah the Desert Rd, Turangi and Taupo. Lunch in Taupo probably, but who knows. Should arrive in the big AK mid afternoon. Plenty of time to cruise down Queen St and take in the Bridge before settling down in Mission Bay. Ahhhh, I like annual leave. Hopefully see some of you guys tomorrow

argh....have to bite the bullet and pay retail i guess **eeewww**
its unlikely another one will come up on trademe to fit an RF900 (the 600 and 400 are different) in a hurry and I'd like it for this weekend as well as the Gizzy ride.
Now you know what hassle us girlies have when we need a handbag to match, if it's right you just have to go for it!!!!!!
roger_doger can ride it back, I told him to catch up with us on Saturday if he can....
Now that would be fun, we could give him a lift but the Daytona is loaded to the max with us and the pack!!! Not by some countries standards where any less than 4 on a bike is wasteful but don't think 86 could corner quite so well with somebody sat on the tank and with weather and roads like today I am looking forward to some serious fun on the twisties
Um,by 8am, he is still in the shower:sunny:

just got back from a 600km weekend, 2 up with the new rack and bag
palmy to napier last night: a great ride in the dark, especially the last section where a 4x4 set a surprisingly blistering pace through the northern end of route 50 :shit: forgot that mrs yod hasnt done excessive speed at night tho oops....she has now
napier to taupo this morning, was stuck behind a cop for the first 5 km, until he busted some poor speeder going the other way, his lights came on and I shat myself until i saw him going for the u-turn...1st time thru highway 5 on the bike, couldnt cane it as the bacon was plentiful but a good ride, nice road, nice conditions
met a nice palmy couple, james and debs, at the waterfall lookout on highway 5, on a very new M109, cruised into taupo together and had lunch with them....told them to have a nosey on here if they get chance...nice to meet ya guys
then caught up with sarge for the homeward dash from taupo
a pretty mellow pace other than a few spots, which was good with the amount of plods we saw out there
a pleasure as always sarge...

Gary and I did our first daylight savings jaunt today. Gary on his SV and I on Gerble headed down to the Carterton sprints via "the track", Alfredton, Masterton then down the main drag. Stayed at the sprints a wee while then headed home.
Back via the Masterston heavy traffic bypass, maindrag, some side road, maindrag again, Ekatawhere, Alfedton , Pongaroa (just made it to the store in time for a pie-closes 3pm on a Sunday), Makuri gorge rd, Woodville, Saddle Rd then home. Lots of roaming stock(when in Roam(sp) and all that............) and
magpies about (trying to brag off about the win over the Turbos I guess). Around 4 or 5 ks out of Pongaroa, heading to Pahiatua, is a sharp left hander that has been freshly sealed with a ton of pee gravel in the riding line. This caught Gary by surprise but he manage to stay upright. Luckily no traffic was coming in the oppersite direction. Other than that a good ride. Looks like we got back at the right time as the winds fare picking up.
At no time was a GPS required on this ride. :p

Well, what an amazing trip! Got home just before the only real rain we saw in three days on the road.
Friday morning was an absolute stunner! Ready to go by 8, then Sarah decides she needs shoes. So, across town to pick them up, a quick pie and latte at the BP, then it’s straight onto Vinegar Hill.
I’d hardend up my suspension in anticipation of two up plus bags and this has made a huge difference, and I’m glad I guessed right about the settings lol!
Made a very good pace to Taihape where we stop for another latte and just take in the amazing day. Onto the Desert Rd, a couple of stops for pics, would have been rude not too given the incredible visibility and being Sarah’s first time and all north of Waiouru.
Get going again and what do you know. An accident has backed up all traffic in both directions for several miles. People are camping on the side of the road, but on the bike no problems, and we just cruise past the poor cagers, who are all very good about it all and cheer us on
Get to Turangi and after a quick trip to the lookout it’s back down the hill to pick up my rainsuit and make sure I know where my tent is.
It’s a good pace to Taupo for lunch where lol and behold I run into an old mate and his mates on their Harleys. Since we’re on the Trumpy I receive admiring looks all round and a good catch up.
Sarah calls VTS and finds that the importers have fucked up slightly on the paperwork. She’s pissed off but I have a good feeling about it.
Then it’s time to get hard core and I go non stop Taupo to Auckland (Cowboyz would have been proud lol). Bloody good ride and I manage to average about 130 all the way across the Hauraki Plains. Most cars are very obliging and pull over to let us through. Eyes peeled very hard for law enforcement I only see two :Police: the whole way, and manage to avoid any unpleasantness. I'll keep this non political and not mention that 100 kph is a crock - mostly.
Hit the Bombays dead on five twenty and make good time until about Greenlane when the gridlock hits big time. Never mind, taking a cue from a couple of local bikers including a Hells Angel I lane split with the best of them and apart from one red Fiat who’s determined to cut me off we hit Ponsonby Rd 2 hrs 50 mins after leaving Taupo. Good stuff.
After a sit down it’s down to Mission Bay to the motel for dinner and wind down. Get a call from an AK KBer and get directions to pick up Barry’s latest bike accessory :niceone:
Sleep the sleep on the biker holidaying person and up bright and early to a beautiful Auckland day. VTS still shagging around but it sounds positive. Typically, any ‘non standard’ parts, in this case steel braided brake lines, cannot be passed unless they are replaced with the inferior original units. BUT, the rules say that the vehicle can be driven to a ‘place of repair’. So, I establish that while Auckland to Palmerston may not exactly be what the rule makers had in mind, we’d argue that on the road if necessary :devil2:
So, long story short, we can pick up the bike. Yes!
Then it’s a quick run out to Hobsonville to pick up Barry’s part from Warlock. Thanks mate, good to meet you. Nice bike too.
Back onto the Southern Way to Manakau and get to VTS just before close. Finally, the moment has arrived and we are introduced to the Honda. Well, there she is sitting in the ‘compliance bay’. Not bad at all for a 27 year old girl. Very tidy and very classic, she’s a bit dusty, and covered in lovely gold bling. She’s got the biggest indicators I’ve ever seen and of course a huge yellow British number plate. But that's ok, she fires up first time and damn she sounds good  :sunny:
Sarah very kindly lets me drive her outside and we peel the labels off her brand new Bridgestone Battlax’s and generally get all gushy over this classic old girl who’s just travelled halfway round the world and is soon to get the run of her 6000 mile life.
I like her a lot, and Sarah gets accquainted in the carpark. She’s all good, even the tyre pressures and oil so we hit the motorway again and stop at the BP service centre to swap luggage and generally discuss the way back.
Coromandel it is then and so soon we’re sailing down the Bombays and onto those absolutely amazing twisties through to Whangamata. Sarahs going very well somewhere in the mirrors and we swap bikes for the run into Whangamata. I just couldn’t wait for a decent spin on the old girl and with no intent whatsoever I find she’s scraping her exhaust mounts around that great road. No harm done tho, and the chicken strips soon disappear.
I also get a rare chance to observe how great the Daytona looks on the move, gee you guys are lucky lol
There’s a bit more bike swapping all the way to Tauranga and Sarah seems to have fallen for two bikes  I also get to see how quickly the Daytona can blend into the far horizon, wow!
I really enjoy the upright cruise position of the Honda and have a ball on it. Very different in a way only 27 years can make for.
In Tauranga we bump into four guys from Levin, one of whom has a black Daytona, same year as mine. Very nice. Seems there were originally eight of them and just to prove that we’re not so bad at getting lost, the other four have managed to lose themselves completely. Seems we’re not the only ones eh lol
We gas up here and I’m amazed to note that despite being ridden considerably harder the Daytona has consumed almost 5 litres less fuel from AK. Modern efficiencies – great.
Hit Rotovagas just on dark and gas up again. As we’re deciding to saddle up again up walks a policeman. Oh oh, big yellow British number plate has been spotted, but he couldn’t have been nicer about it, and we manage to leave Rotos with no bother whatsoever :sweatdrop
A spirited night run to Taupo follows, I’m on the Honda which manages more than adequately to crack the ton, briefly.
A good nights sleep aided by a bottle or two of the Hawkes Bay liquid and it’s into Turangi this morning for breakfast. Decide on the National Park, Fields track and the Paras and we’re soon powering through the tundra. Bloody cold it was too, but Fields track is just as good as I remember it and it warms up as we descend into the valleys. A quick stop at the Bridge then it’s up the hill again and onto the Paras! Fantastic and much better condition than last time. Turakina for coffee then back via Marton and Halcombe Hill.
Pull up to the garage just as the biggest thunderstorm in recent memory hits  No worries. 1390.5 km in 3 days. Great rides, great roads, great bikes, perfect!

Thanks mate, not pristine but something to work on. At least we have worn the labels off the bridgestones.
Well I had to get Ali to do the ride report as he A) has a clue where we were, B) he does it so well :innocent: and I was doing pics
Being a woman, however, I can't resist putting in a word or two myself:lol:
The bright clear start on Friday heralded an amazing trip that I will always remember. Ali and I were both awake early and keen to get on the road. As we crested one of the rises along vinegar hill Ali pointed left and the mountain was revealed in all her glory in the brilliant sunshine. The ride to Tihape and then Taupo via Turangi was a series of more gorgeous scenery and thrilling riding on dry fast roads. I admit to feeling a little sad knowing that this would be my last long pillion trip on that gorgeous golden Daytona so decided to revel in the experience. By Tihape my cheeks were already aching from the fixed cheesy grin. Being on the back of that bike is like an out of body experience at times and the miles/K's just flashed by.The harder suspension also made the corners much faster:2thumbsup:
The desert highway was as bleak and beautiful as I had heard and my gloves were off more than on as I took pictures as we sped along. We stopped too as you could see. Turangi lookout was beautiful too with a lovely clear view over the plateau and numerous people stopping for a chat about the bike and getting caught up in the excitement of our trip. We were buzzing :wari:
Turangi was a quick stop on the way up but had a relaxed and fun feel to it, I really enjoyed the ride along the lake to lunch in Taupo and imagine bumping into a blast from Ali's past. Taupo to Auckland was a different ride again, lots of speed and lots of K's but we were both just happy to keep on going and the Daytona happily obliged.
Ponsonby road is the chic place for coffee in Auckland and we managed to stop at the only place that didn't do lattes!!!! Poor Ali, especially after the motorway madness which reminded me why I left the UK and both of us why we love the Manawatu :2thumbsup:
Mission Bay was lovely and after a quick freshen up and chat with the motel owner, a pom, about our trip, we ate at a great German restaurant 2m walk down the road. That wiped us out and despite the worry/excitement of the coming morning both chose sleep over a wild night out in Auckland!!!
Saturday dawned early (530am) with great skies again and then we lazed impatiently about waiting for LTNZ to open at 8am. I had got myself in a panic over the previous days problem and woke up in a foul mood sure that we would not be able to get the bike (Ali was too much of a gentleman to tell you that!!). Not only did Ali pillion me halfway up the country but he managed to keep me from completely losing the plot and got LTNZ to agree to release the bike without any registration too. I owe him heaps for that:yes:
When we finally picked up the Honda I was almost stunned and couldn’t quite believe it was true. I was also pretty daunted by the huge engine. As we rode out of town the excitement started to build and to be honest I am still buzzing.
The taste of the Coromandel penisula has me hooked and a weekend up there is next on the weekend trip list. I was blown away by the scenery and then by the opportunity to ride the Daytona. To ride two such different bikes one after another was heaven. They are so different but both such fun in their own ways. I am totally in  and felt in bike heaven throughout. I even had the joy of 50 metres of gravel on the Daytona in one town, fully aware that Ali was probably having cold sweats in front of me, understandable after the hornet vinegar hill episode. Needless to say we remain unscathed and played swapsies all of the way to Taupo. Riding the Daytona gave me a lot more confidence through the twisties and I felt my rhythm improving throughout the trip.
Sunday was another day of heightened awareness of the stunning country we live in and all the great roads there are to explore with gorgeous riding in great scenery. Neither of us wanted it to end so took a languid circuitous route towards palmie. Riding on field track was like stepping back in time and out of the world for a few hours and is a place with memories to treasure.
The wind picked up near Fordell and across towards Feilding but managed to stay upright at a reasonable speed and it was good to hear Ali had found it a little annoying too.
I walked through my front door and the heavens opened. It poured just long enough for me to freshen up and change then stopped long enough for me to get SK1PY and pics to Ali’s for downloading. We truly could not have had better weather and what a fab weekend.
I am sorry we didn’t catch up with those of you that intended to meet us but I cannot deny the fantastic experience I had on great roads, in great company and on great bikes. I am eternally grateful for all the effort Ali put into this for me and for all the support and encouragement from my friends and others on KB :grouphug: SK1PY is in having the brake cables done then will be a familiar sight on the roads of the North island  :ride:

The '05 GC took in Fields track to National Park & then onto Turangi as the last leg. Not as much fun after riding 1400km non-stop. Just one of the little interesting diversions chucked into the run. There's normally a few "slow" sections chucked in - 3 last year! Have you seen the DVD of last year's event?
A good ride on a decent day but need to watch road conditions & for stock on the road. I was wondering a while back if the lahar did any damage - I'm sure I saw footage on TV of it flowing over one of the bridges. Did you guys see any sign of it?

No lahar damage, just the usual stock and branches, nothing major though. The sign on the bridge warns of volcanic acidity in the water.

I've got new seals ready to go in, and got some sanding attachments for the drill to clean out the metal lips between the seal grooves as that looked like a big part of the problem...a lot of crap had built up on them
the next thing is to find some funky tool to actually clean the crap out from inside the seal groove...this will be a bit more difficult as the caliper is open on one side but very closed in on the other (as you can see), how that much crap managed to build up behind the seals while the psitons were in there I dont know....
but at least the pistons now slide in and out of the empty chambers nicely after the cleaning I've done so far and I also put one of the new top (smaller) seals in the rear caliper chamber and then tried sliding the piston in and out and found it was pretty good, tight but movable and it seemed to seal pretty well, (as you'd expect)

jumping into dangerous territory with sanding there. I would be more inclined to use diesel and a cloth. Be very careful how much you stick that drill in the hole or you are going to end up with brake fluid all over your discs.

???
arent the seals supposed to keep the fluid in? not the metal?
its just that the extra crap built up on the metal is what was (partly) causing the pistons to jam
not going anywhere near the actual internal chamber (below the inner seal), they're clean as a whistle anyway - luckily it can only reach as far in as the first lip and no further so that works quite well

its all good then.
And yes the seals keep the fluid at bay. But if you create a lip or a ding in the sidewall of the housing the putting it back together you will find it easy to crimp the o ring and then the entertainment begins. Or if you "ramp" the o ring bay then it will pop out over time and that could be entertaining too.

ah gotcha, should be ok....the sanding head is about two thirds the size of the whole cylinder and the other side of the caliper is kinda in the way of the chuck so I can barely change the angle that it touchs the sidewall or put it in very far - would be very hard to 'ramp' it as you say or damage the cylinder
cleaning out the actual seal grooves is going to be a right arse...fiddly little gap in a fiddly little place...but there is a surprising amount of shit in there so i'd rather take the time and get it as clean as possible the first time than have to pull it all apart again :shit:

Sounds great, I wondered about labour weekend but not sure if anything else on that I have missed.
Would love to do rest of paraparas (think that is how you spell it). We bypassed about 50k by going on fields track but it was damn well worth it:2thumbsup:
Have to start planning so we can keep our weekends fun and buzzing :ride:
Sheesh:scratch: Labour weekend, that might be unlikely coz the bach in whitianga is owned be friends in Aucks and i'd be really surprised if they were'nt over there that weekend:( I know I would be.... But I will ask if you want, can't hurt.

Kinda know what you mean, I'm a bit scared to un-bolt the calipers on the Ace coz it could cost me $120 but it has to be done I suppose. The pads must be getting a bit thin on it now. Who ever said bikes where cheap to run, that person was full of :bs: So much to buy and so little money!

There is always somewhere we can find to stay depending on funds:yes: Don't think Palmie is going to be seeing much of me at weekends now I have the Honda :2thumbsup:

Just poking my head in - Bikes for sale - anyone want a TRX that just needs someone to love it a little for cheap $$$? Bought a VFR700, off to Auck on Friday/Sat to pick it up.
I have a question for Al: How the heck'd you take the photo of the Auckland motorway? Did you have Sarah doing stunts on the back?

As I am playing online at lunch time I will answer for us:sunny:
Me stunts :innocent: never.
I can manage photography from the back of the Daytona up to around 80k/hr or so. Many of the desert road pics were on the move:yes: Above those speeds the wind wobbles the camera too much and it all blurs.
Much of the time 86 doesn't know what I am up to  but he did in Auckland because we were going slow enough to talk. We have chalked up quite a few k's together and he is such a smooth rider  I don't need to really pay attention to 86 or the road when I am on the back, just enjoy and go with the flow:2thumbsup: Or take lots of pics!!!
As you will see from earlier comments, I have been so relaxed I have rarely even had a clue what direction we were going in so now having to study the maps:yes:
Congrats on new bike :scooter:
Make the most of the trip back, some great roads and scenery, I was blown away by the whole experience last weekend and planning to get north again asap.

Sorry for encroaching.......... We have had a few enquiries for custom made earplugs from the Palmy area. I understand there is a Classic day at Manfeild on November 18th and if there is enough enquiry for us to attend to make earplugs, we will endeavour to confirm with the organisers. Cheers Sue

Could do with reverse on Honda too, a little heavy to push, and I can't get both feet flat on ground when on it, so backing up is interesting
The HONDA is legal at last:done: Number plate is 61YZC for the next two weeks until SK1PY arrives. Same year as a friend I know so take it as a good sign :2thumbsup:
$400 for the pleasure of replacing perfectly good brake cables that would pass the WOF but not the import check  VTNZ guy at Palmie just shook his head in disbelief and said he was sorry. He rides a trail bike so had a spin on the CB in the carpark to check the brakes:ride:
Short round trip to fielding for coffee to get me back in the habit of concentrating on where I am going.
The trip out to dogs place involved more dodging birds than anything else (feathered variety). I got to have a nostalgic moment or two on the pillion seat and 86 made some friends too.

ok....firstly....umm thats waaay too much information....
secondly, nah, probably not, dont wanna put any more undue wear on the RF before I can replace pads/disc, need to finish the brakes on the VFR, need to spend some more time on our gardens etc (since all I've been doing is riding every weekend for as long as I can remember :niceone:), there's also oodles of sport on the box that needs to be viewed, with brewskis of course, and I also have a fair bit of work to do on a demo system....
