I went to get some from a well know shop on the shore and they wanted to charge me $55 for a set of rear pads (thought that was a bit steep!)
Also should I go for the hard or the soft brake pads??

Doesn't sound that horrific. You see some cheapies pop up on Trademe from time to time for the XRs and the CRs, about $40 (or even $30? Don't pay much attention).
I'm not experienced with stuff like this, but surely it would be better to go with soft pads? Pads are cheap, discs are not. Better to wear out the pads and save the discs.

Better to get the right pads and discs and stop properly.
I go to Cycletreads on the shore for consumables (pads, tyres, etc.)

Use the front breaks, Cheese. then you don't have to change the back pads. as often
