I bought a VFR400 (NC24) recently with the intention of bringing it to NZ when I move back, hopefully near the end of this year. Since then I've found that there are hassles involved with getting imported bikes on the road in NZ. I already have a couple of bikes which will be coming with me and am thinking maybe I could do without the extra work...
So I wanted to guage how much interest there would be in this bike - I would not use it much myself since I have the others, so if I could not sell it it would probably become a race bike, which seems like too much of a luxury, and the bike is too good to do that to.
Considering importing costs and everything, I reckon I would need to draw the line at $4000, otherwise I might as well just sell it here. Judging from trademe and posts on KB etc that seems reasonable. However I've been away from NZ for 10 years now and I never knew anything about bikes when I was there before, maybe the scene is not what I'm thinking. Any opinions on whether this would fetch $4k?

The bike is a 1987 NC24, will most likely have about 21,000km on it by the time it arrives. Generally it is in pretty good condition. The only worries are the fork clamps which have some kind of wierd corrosion (see photos), and the clutch seems to be very 'grabby' - I've never ridden any other bikes this old so it could be normal for older bikes but somehow I don't think so. Also tires will need to be changed. Otherwise no issues. It goes quite well, I managed 170km/h (dont tell my mum). Some other info on my blog if you're interested.

here a good nick one registered and awrrented is only going for about $2400 NZD

unregoed you would be lucky to get 2 grand to be honest...sell it overseas...or bring it over as a trackbike...shes too nice to be a trackbike though.

i say sell it where you are...400's are worth way less than 250's here.

What kind of hassles are there getting imported bikes on the road? I thought it was relatively easy, or is that just for older bikes?

If you sell it quickly after importing it, you have to pay GST too, don't you? Might be better to sell it over there.
