View Full Version : StoneChucker Goes DOWN

Well, where to start!
I've posted pics, but I'll label them later.
We left early to drop by McCool's place, to organise our ride up to Tokaanu, which I WON'T be going on now :( Thanks Larry, you were very hospitable. Then we headed up to Raumati to PaulInNZ's place to fit some new handle bars on JazBug5's bike. Again, thank you Paul, very nice of you to feed us so nicely :)

Left Raumati, went over Paekak hill, up the Rimutaka's and back home. Saw Jazbug to her door, then left and went to go visit a friend. Finally left there about 6pm, headed up John St in Newtown, turned up Finnimore Tce and headed up that nice windy, uphill road (which goes to brooklyn/mornington).

I was turning round a sharp corner (which I have done MANY times, some at faster speeds than I was going tonight), when the next thing I know I hit the ground, and find myself sliding, and watching my damn bike sliding away from me, and finally hitting the curb, where it came to rest... Fairings badly scratched, mirror and indicator scratched, and worse of all, engine scratched and leaking copious amounts of oil. SO, I guess I've cracked something.

Now, just have to get the insurance assessor to come check it out, and if it's relatively cheap to fix, which it won't be, pay myself, otherwise what I think will be the case, have the insurance pay, loose my no claims bonus, and have my premiums increase by $800 per year, over and above what I'm paying now.

Both knee's scraped, elbow scraped, hip VERY sore, bruised. My mum, a nurse, is going to check me out now, and I might go have it checked out at Hutt Hospital.

Oh.... WOE is me, my budieful bike is no more, wail wail wail

Dave, bikeless

That's awful mate. Glad that you weren't hurt too badly, although things seem to hurt a bit more later.

Hope that all works out well, especially with the isurance. Wasn't any diesel or anything on the road?

All the best,

Bugger.

Go in the morning, or after the MotoGP finishes.

No sense waiting for hours in the A&E to be seen. You're more likely to get seen easier later on.

Shame about that bike, SC. I'd hate to be paying your insurance premiums. Might be cheaper to fix it yourself and never mention it to the insurance company.

Anyway - scratched fairings are cool. Every Yamaha should have them. Trust me on this one. :msn-wink:

Hope you're okay. Bikes can be fixed.

From past (well, June) experience, you will hurt a LOT more tomorrow morning. Get some arnica and take some painkillers. Stay off the piss for a few days.

Good luck.

One thing bugs me though Dave, and don't take offence at this, but why did you spend so much money on a motorcycle and so little money on protective gear?

Ouch.

man that got to hurt. Glad you didn't come off too bad. As I found out bikes can be replaced/fixed but people it an't so easy to do. Get better quick. Also expect it too really start hurting in a day or two.

Yeah ditto on that - glad to hear that you are not badly hurt - and have the appropriate advice on hand..:doctor:

Oooo, ow, ouch... damn... That doesn't look good, hope nowt's broken (on you I mean)... Ah yes hip pain... makes for a lovely bruise in a few days... but if you're walking and not peeing blood you'll be right... Get back on soon...

OUCH road rash

As Celticno6 mentioned, get some Arnica gel. My better half gave me some after my off and it did wonders.

I take it first on the list is some DECENT PROTECTIVE GEAR. :) Can't be said enough really.

Leasons learnt always seem to hurt.

Surely it should be doable to get it back in time for Tokaanu? Doesn't look like too much damage. Did the bike hit the gutter? Take it you haven't had a chance to look under and see where she's leaking, and why?

Really sorry to hear about this unfortunate event, but I can relate because I did the same thing today at 3pm! Have postsed about it here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=98404&posted=1#post98404 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=98404&posted=1#post98404)

Hope you're feeling better soon, both physically & mentally (about the bike & future riding). :niceone:

Oh mate - that's no good at all! Really sorry to hear - at least it sounds like it was a low speed one though eh. Hope you patch up quick and that the doctors' went ok last night!
Why won't you be coming up north though? Surely it won't take that long to get the engine sorted? Tell the shop that you've got a time limit and see what they say. Or else grab a ride with someone (I'd offer but the 250 mightn't appreciate it too much, and I don't know where I'd bung my gear.)
Good luck Dave!

3rd October 2004, 01:22
bugger. you have my sympathies.

I'm not going to preach about safety gear. Unfortunately you've had to learn the hard way about the protective value of jeans..

Please do get yourself checked out though. If you've done something major it's better to get it looked at now, and get it of your mind, than to leave an injury untreated for a week.

Any scratches on your lid? If so keep an eye out for concussion symptoms..

Hope you're back out terrorising the locals soon!

3rd October 2004, 01:23
Pleased you came through it relatively unscathed SC, the bike can be fixed.

And get yourself some decent gear!

Oh nooooooooooo! I was so gutted for you when I got your text about binning! :disapint: I'm glad there is no permanent damage to you or the bike. OUCH!!!!

 for you.

So do ya think the bike won't be fixed by Tokaanu? I hope so.

Rest & take care of yourself.

Pah.

You could have just said you didn't want to come to our little dinner party, Stony. I mean, everyone made a full recovery last time...eventually.
The lengths some people will go to..... sheesh.
See ya tomorrow, and take it easy.
It will work out. Trust me, I'm a professional. I have a certificate from Nigeria that says so.

Wasn't any diesel or anything on the road?
Haven't a clue, the worst thing! I don't know why I crashed. Must have been something though, I wasn't going all that fast.

but why did you spend so much money on a motorcycle and so little money on protective gear?
Yeah, silly as I know. I was in the process of buying decent pants, especially after JazBug last weekend

Why won't you be coming up north though?
Well, when I enquired about ordering a new front fairing a while back, they said 10 days delivery time, so for the fairings at least, not even mentioning the engine, 10 days from the 4th, that only leaves 2 days to work on in the shop. AND, after I was a bit of a wanker to them a while back, I doubt they will be in much of a rush to fix it for me. But I'm sure they'll work as fast as they normally do, so I'm holding thumbs.

Well, I'm going to bed shortly, I spent 30 mins at Wgtn police station reporting the accident, 2 hours at Hutt hospital, and 20 mins at hutt police station, handing in a wallet I found lying on the road. I've had enough excitement for one day.

By the way, NONE of you can go riding, till I get my bike back. :msn-wink:

Hi there Stonechucker.

We'd seen you, VTWIN and Jaz around 3pm yesterday on the m/way near Upper Hutt yesterday as you were heading towards the Rimutakas. (we were heading home as the weather was getting a bit yickky)

I'm so sorry to hear about your bin. I too wonder if there was gravel or similar on the road?

Take good care of yourself. LIke the others say, today you'll feel much worse. I'm REALLY glad you got yourself checked out and reported it to the Police. Listen to your Mum about your health! (I didn't realise the whole family had come over from SA - you'll have to tell us about it some time at the Fish)

It took me a while to figure out what the wallet was!

Good luck with the parts and getting the bike back on the road.

Keep us posted.

For all it's worth...everybody at some stage bins their bike, least you didn't crash like this guy (see pic)
Now do you see the importance of proper riding gear, American Express advert somes it up...DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT.
Just hope the oil leak is something simple like a hole in the filter & not the crank case.
Hope your not too sore in the morning (i suspect you will be by the way you were limping last night)
If you speak to the shop & explain that you've got a ride comming up they might have it ready in time.....if not there maybe some generous person out there who would lend you a bike for the weekend??????

Ginormous buggery bollocks !!! ... not nice at all ...

Listen mate ...if it looks like you're not gonna get ready in time for the ride to Quasies shindig, PM me and I'll give ya a lift on the old one !! I'm quite happy to head down ... any excuse to make a ride longer will do me !!... :cool2: if you can get to WT's work (WMC) At the time they are going .... 1pm I think .... then we can strap you & your gear on the bitch and we're off !! :headbang: I have a tank bag but no pack rack so you might have to use a back-pack ....unless someone has a frame we could borrow ... the mounting for the rack is there I just misplaced the rack a few years back ....

Ah. Were you the one a while back bagging them for not cleaning your R1 properly, or something? I forget.

The bad karma retribution gods have obviously been out in force.

Yours is for being mean to the bike shop.

Zed's is for, um... well, he *has* pointed out repeatedly that he's a sinner :p

And firestormer and I obviously got our $300 tickets as payback for lifetimes of general naughtiness.

Get well soon.

3rd October 2004, 09:38
Oh yeah, and re. the gear, I don't think anyone should have a go at poor old StoneChucker and his grated limbs. I reckon any time anyone bins without gear, the resulting effects are voluble enough to make the required point.

We'll look forward to seeing the photos of you picking up the R1 from the shop in your full one-piece speed-humped Dainese race suit, SC...

3rd October 2004, 10:12
I am so sorry to hear about this stonechucker, makes me feel a bit queasy with you not having protective pants on though, I guess a bit of hip and knee padding makes all the difference in that sort of accident, you have almost 2 weeks left to get your lovely bike sorted out, what a shame. I hope it's something as simple as just needing to get new bolts and gaskets for engine housing cover, it appears in the photo to be intact, no visible cracks anyhow

Paul in NZ
3rd October 2004, 11:09
Aw Shit..... That REALLY sucks BIG TIME mate...

For gawds sake let me know what I can do to help. A few scratches are not going to stop you going to the rally. Just get the oil leak sorted etc and get it OK to ride... Most of my bikes have been held together with duct tape and cable ties at some stage... hell, I've been held together with duct tape and cable ties at times... (no, not held DOWN by them although it has a certain appeal perhaps)

As for the protective pants thing? Leave off eh?? Easy to say after the fact but lets face it, we've all been there done that? Yesterday when I saw you guys coming to our place I was headed to thew dairy on the SR250 wearing jeans, a fibre pile jacket, open faced helmet etc etc (hey I did have tramping boots and gloves).... I'm pretty sure mother nature has given SC the message eh?

I'm back in town wednesday. I have some meetings on wed but I'll shift things if you want help at either getting the thing down there or getting any other help. If you have to get parts I can see what we can do.

As for why it went down? Once you stop hurting think if it low sided or high sided. Both tyres are a bit worn (though not that much surely) and that bikes got enough grunt to cause all sorts of injury as punishment for the slightest mistake... Don't stress.......

It hurts when you prang your first new (decent) bike. Stop beating yourself up. Trust me. It happens to people every day!

Just PM me and tell me what I can do to help! (no you can't borrow the Guzzi as I need it the following weekend)............

So.. Harden up son, wounds heal, chicks dig scars and glory never fades...

hehehehe, not for a little while, but yeah, will do

PM me and I'll give ya a lift on the old one !!
Thanks mate, I'll let you know...

for not cleaning your R1 properly, or something?
Um, no, not quite. Was mostly me being unreasonable, but what I was worried about wasn't the cleanliness of the bike.

it appears in the photo to be intact
Yeah, I have no idea. Some parts look a little outta line, maybe just fairings.

no you can't borrow the Guzzi as I need it the following weekend
You selfish b@stard

For gawds sake let me know what I can do to help
Thanks Paul, but I should be alright. Luckily (what?? lol) everything happened in Wgtn, and it's parked somewhere safe, and accessible by the assessor. Most likely have it towed to Sawyers, and spend the next few weeks attached to their shop window like a "sucker fish"

At least you’re still walking & talking, that's the main thing.

They’re still making bikes. Hopefully the Oil is just draining from the breather hose after it's wee lie down?

Scratched plastic wont rust, adds character to the bike & humility to the rider (I’ve been there!)

Be sure & check the heal guard is clear of the swingarm, if the foor peg bracket has bent it could have moved the heal guard in & you don’t want that rubbing.

Hope it all works out OK for you.

Glad to hear no big problems discovered at the hospital last night SC.

I guess you ignored my advice and went straight to the hospital avoiding what was on the telly at the time - pity, you would have seen that it happens even to the best of us.

With luck the bike will be easy to fix and you'll be up in Tokaanu with a scratched but still fully functional R1.

I bet you noticed it when you got out of bed this morning though! That knee must be fair hurting mate...

Ignore my advice of last night about laying off the piss - a couple single malts helps with that "run over" feeling ... just not too many.

Good luck with the bike.

Sheeet mate, seeing you havent hadnt all that long either, that suck arse. Hope your knee and bits heal up well, last major, major bin i had half my knee went missing, most of it grew back, shit i wish bikes would grow back too.
But seriously man, buy some real decent gear, i'd be wearing my gears on a 250cc let alone an R1, i offed it not that long ago at almost 100 clicks not a scratch on me, and i'd imagine Zed is a bit sorer than what i was but nothing to major.

Gutters are bike killers aren't they? The dent in my arse from almost 2 years ago proves that, ah memories.

Tis a shame you don't know what went wrong to, hope you can get back on her sooner than later.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune I'm glad you're alright.

No not to diminish the honest sentiment of the above statement (PS did see youse guys sat heading north sat near my turnoff to Kelson) anyways, just a couple of members I’ll use the above to illustrate the difference between ‘your’ & ‘you’re’

Your; means you own it or it is attributed to you
You’re; is of course short for ‘you are’. Therefore ‘glad your alright’ makes no sense. Sorry, just trying to slow the process that will eventually mean we will all be spelling in txt B4 Xmas. :calm:

Hope you can fix the bike up so as not to notice.

Eh? You got it all wrong, man.

The apostrophe is used to warn the reader of an upcoming 's'. As when discussing a shop that sell's motorbike's. Or the price of a new pair of armoured glove's.

Since theres no 's' in 'your', its wrong to use an apostrophe.

Like, duh.

Perhaps, indeed, a yearning to own a future, even more desirable MV. The 'F5'. Which would be propelled along the road solely by travelling through the ruptures in spacetime caused by its extreme sexiness transcending the mundane laws of physics and passing into the spiritual realm.
