i had one for more than a year...got my restricted and full on that bike and i LOVED HER
light azz so you could through her around
AWESOM low end power so can motor off the mark or out of corners
i weigh 80kgs and i got her to go up to 155kms screamin in fifth (5 speed but beautiful)
had the lovely candy red 2002 model
sad ending tho, right before i sat my full (when i was doing defensive driving which is ironic) some moron hit her when she was parked and did a runner
dented the tank, bent handle bar, scratches everywher, bent pegs...almost broke down to tears when i came out and found her that way :crybaby:
spent a bit of money fixing her up and then reluctantly sold her :bye: so i could upgrade a few months back
still miss her tho

only thing it could of had was a suzuki gear box!!! crap honda box, clunky and hard to find N.
a 6 speed box would transform the bike i reckon.

a 6 speed box would transform the bike i reckon.Well I think you're makin' a wee generalisation about crap Honda box. I have a VT250 Spada, which is the older, faster, racier version of the VTR and it's gearbox is fine. I had a XR200, and have ridden an XR250, and I have owned a CT125 bucket. None of these bikes had 'crap Honda gear box.
But you're right about a 6speed box. I have yet to ride a VTR, but have ridden with them, and my Spada just leaves 'em for dead. In torque and top speed. 170 out of the Spada, and a very inaccurate (me counting - although I am a musician so do have good timing) test of 0-100 in about 7 seconds proves to be fairly good.
The VTR is a good bike, don't get me wrong. But I wouldn't want to trade my Spada in on one. Glad I got the older sister.

The clunky Honda gearbox is just a generalisation, much like unreliable Ducatis. Like the unreliable Ducati stories, this too has a grain of truth in it. The VT250 box may be `fine', as is the gearbox in my 250RS, but a GSXR600 box seems silky smooth by comparison, and certainly no worries about false neutrals.
They may be clunky, loud and heavy, but they seem to be pretty reliable. Kind of like a BMW parallel twin; I really struggled to work my way through the box on that in a hurry :)
@Sidewinder, every bike manufacturer worth their salt hardens the gears in the box. Otherwise they won't last terribly long.

would you buy a late 80's 90's Ducati?? every time i go to a bike shop there are heards of them in bits!, i have a blackbird now and its hit 70,000km gearbox is still a hard clunk into 1st! just like every other honda i have had the pleasure to ride.
I found all three of my suzuki bikes gearbox action so much smoother.
How long they last may be another question! i know rf900 and gsxr1100's tend to drop 2nd gear when worn.
All i was trying to say was the little vtr was great but the hard "thunk" into 1st was a real bitch.

This is my VTR250 just before I sold her. A heavy heart and a tear in my eye as I sold her to a young fella from Tauranga.
Custom paint job by the way due to crate damage on the way from Japan - had to replace the seat cover too.
2003 model - been to Taupo and back and been to Napier and back on it.
A good bike - recommended.
As for clucky gear boxes - I went from this to a 98 Ducati and they're very similar in feel. I can't always tell if the gear has changed on a Suzuki.

Yeah I've got the `thunk' into 1st as well, and that's with all manner of fooling around with clutch adjustment. You can feel it through the whole chassis.

there has to be a reason for it, i did find that on the blackbird at the right revs it clicked in rather than a clunk but ive only ever managed to do it a few times

Givi Airstar fairing. Adds 10kph to the top end of a VTR250 - ask MSTRS about it as he ver'near weee'd himself between Taupo and Napier watching me get max speed out of the 2 fiddy. To paint a picture, I'm just over 6 feet tall and not slender. Moved my arse onto the pillion seat and lay along the tank with the throttle pinned. Just managed to hide behind that fairing.

here is my girl
The first pic is when I saw for the first time...
the second is at the Cold Duck this year, with the morning frost on her...
I don't like the Givvy screens, so am considering custom making a fibreglass "speed triple" like kind of little thing.
Also repaint her in a gunmetal colour...the light silver lacks character in my view point.
And lastly, am researching the Hella's range of headlights, as I'd like to give a bit more of a street fighter look, but don't want to compromise too much the night visibility.
Any thoughts / directions anyone can offer on better headlights would be appreciated.

I don't quite understand the logic behind doubling the exhaust weight. Please can someone enlighten me?

Bro a 2" straight thru pipe could never flow the extreme power a V-Twin 250 can dish out! and if you put the pipes further back you can wheelie real easy!
yeah, cans weigh enough without doubling it. Custom one and halving it would be more worth opening ya wallet for eh.

Sorry guys, but I can't actually give you an idea of cost for a dual custom system as i bought the bike with it built on already.
Sure looks and sounds good though.

what about a comparison between the GSX250 and VTR250?
Im keen to get either, i like the looks of the gsx, but have heard they have carburation problems. How true is this and how much of an issue is it to make the vtr so much more preferable?

GSX250's would be good if they just weren't so shit... VTR250's are awesome, so are their slightly smaller counter-parts, the CB250F (the new ones that almost look identical to the VTR, but they're a single-cylinder)

FYI
My 2000 VTR - is just about to tick over 300km on a tank (open road riding) - and I haven't even switched to reserve yet.
I'm stoked - as before I got it serviced it only managed 260km before puttering out and having to swtich to reserve.
- edit: 320km :niceone:

Got one. (2007 model)
Pros:
Chearish to run. (i blew the clutch with while doin burnouts, i know im an idiot, but honda dealer fixed it for only around 400$, which isnt too much considering the damage)
Good fuel range, around 300 km for a tank when u ride in town)
Very VERYYYYYYY easy to ride, very forgiving too.
Reasonable for a 250 stability on higher speeds.
Light.
Good ground clearance, it can go fast around tight bends.
Its okayish when u have a passager.
Preatty comfy for long rides (350km +).
Has some torque. (most of the times can smoke 4 cylinder 250s of the line)
Not bad finish.
Its a honda.
Cons:
BORING BORING BORING.
No top end at all. It gets to a 105-110 and then it just sorta goes with the wind rly.
Top speed is around 155 and then it starts to hit the red line. I could only get to 155 down the slope. In the straight line it maxes out at around 145.
Tight gear ratio with only 5 gears. Makes alot of buzz on the mway, 100 km in 5th gear = 7 000 rmp.
Not as much equimpent as some of the compeditors.
Ugly IMHO.
I could never admire it.
Very much feels like a noob bike for noob riders.

Hey, Ther engine on my Spada has just kicked it. Because of the bike seems quite rare, i am struguling to find a decent engine for it. However there are a few good smashed VTR's out there. i know the VTR produces sligtly less power, lower revs and only has a 5-speed, but is it possable to transplant the engine into the spada? The engines look very similar in pictures (aside from the sump). the VTR mounts at differnt points, but the old mounts still "look" like they are there....any imformation would be great

Sup all, ive got a 98 vtr250, rps pipe on it (quite loud). 26 000kms
mine hates anything higher than 91 octane, it runs like shit after cruising along the motorway at 110kph then when slowing down for the lights with 95 or higher- like its fouling- its hard to describe it almost stalls?
im 6ft 2 bout 90kg, got it to 160kph absolute max, its a bit small for me, knees get a bit sore after a while but i can get it going round corners well :). its been to round coromandel, hawkes bay and obviously wellington.
but i got it cheap and should hopefully be able to make some money on it when i come to sell it in about a years time and get a street triple.
oh ive just brought some frame sliders off trademe for it

I think he means his knees get sore because of his height (cramped up a bit) not that is sliding his knees on the road. If you want to do that, you gotta do it properly and touch an elbow down as well.

When fitted with the rps pipe was it re-jetted? If not just bump the idle up and ignore it, on the left don the bottom of the carbs is a nice wee screw you can set the pilots with them, factory specs are silly, I would say 3.25 turns out will be nice.;)
