So what's happened to my idle?

Over the Takas today, stopped at Featherston for a regrouping, and the FJR was idling really slowly. Same deal when we stopped at the Fush. The next time I noticed it was at a regroup stop at Featherston prior to exiting the Wairarapa. Turning in at home the bike cut out completely, and wouldn't fire up unless it had a good handful of throttle. Once it had cooled off for a couple of minutes it was happy to idle perfectly. Apart from that the bike is running faultlessly. Most odd.

I suspect a trip to TSS's workshop may be required.

The lads at TSS are going to have a look at it on Friday.

I had thought about wet fuel, but thought that would have affected performance across the board, rather than just at the idle. I shall report back later what the experts find to be the cause.

Not always - it 'depends' (useful phrase that - adds nothing and explains everything).... Is the bike fuel injected or carb?

As it's often outside, the changes in temp can lead to moisture forming in the fuel tank and water in the gas which will sit in the bottom of the tank - a squirt of meths every now and then sorts it out - usually... depending....

Yuck. I got the same thing when I snapped a jet needle on my RF.

Does your bike have carbies? If its FI, one of your fuel injectors could be stuck.

The FJR is injected. And computerised. I had a look. There is absolutely nothing that can be fiddled with by folk such as myself, armed only with good intentions and a Leatherman...

Temperature gauge is reading OK and there have been no smells associated with excessive or prolonged heatings.

dunno then, but the reason i thought dodgy thermostat was coz you said "once it has cooled off for a couple of minutes". that sounds like an over heating/thermostat problem, well it does to me anyway.

Being injected and computerised it could be anyone of a billion sensors etc that monitor mixture, temp, position of the moon etc thinking summats up and altering things to suit.. It may well me a common 'issue' so a troll of the owners group website (I assume there is one in the usa) could be a good start... ;-)

This is *exactly* what happened to me. In my case it just went away once I started threatening it. I suspect it's moisture related.

Like I said, I threatened with tools clearly not designed for the job and that appeared to quell the rebellion. I went through a stage of suspecting the oxygen sensor - since it appeared electrical in nature but without completely buggering it. But it magically went away and we're friends again now thus removing the need for me to gain an education. Phew!

As suspected, the FJR behaved itself admirably for the time spent with a mechanic on Friday. However after a quick flit to Raumati yesterday it started to perform with the slow idle, so I took it straight back to TSS so they could have a listen. Bemused they were.

Today, it got a bad case of hairy goat disease after about 30km of running. Farty, burbling turbulence initially until its lungs cleared at about 4,000rpm. Then, after another 10km it got even rougher, with throttle lag, the whole nine yards. There's black soot all around the ends of the cans, and Mrs H (who was following and observing) said it looked like it was running really rich.

Again, after leaving it to stand for a couple of minutes, it goes just fine.

Back to TSS it shall go for them to play with sensors and stuff that goes into that Black Box thingee.

Sounds like a dicky temperature sensor, turning the choke on. It is auto choke??
