Im a dork...........I rode got lost...was late..........u all left with out me. So I rode to "I dunno" I was picking a car every five minutes and following it for 5 mins. Ended up somewhere, dunno where but managed to find home.....but was gone for 3 hours, kinda fun getting lost and refound.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR was perfect day for riding..........Im so angry I missed the ride Im getting very very drunk tonight!

hope theres another one soon. I have to ride to whangerei next weekend Saterday if anyone wants to tag along. Or perhaps u guyz could orginize a ride up there next Sat? :) :) :)

well there ya have it, after an amazing ride up north yesterday we get a chance to do it all over again on a longer ride, this time all the way up to whangarei

any reason to go for a ride

now that we know the roads a bit better we can have less stops and thus make the most of the day

once again will be splitting into the different skill groups etc etc

post up or pm me if you are keen so that we know what sort of numbers we have going up

cheers,
nish :)

When: 10 am Saturday 1 September (Might shift to Sunday if weather is crap on Sat)
Where: Meet by the gym on Symonds St.
Departure: We will be leaving from the gym at 10.30 sharp so come early to make sure you dont get left behind.
Where to: Whangarei
Who For: People of all skill levels are welcome. We will split into two groups, a lead pack and a joy ride pack, just to accomodate for the differences in skill and experience.
A good chance to get out on the road to pick up some tips and get experience on open roads

this is just a copy of the ride info from the 25th aug ride (with minor changes) so those of you who came on the ride yesterday (25th aug) will know exactly what is involved.

like i said tho there will be fewer stops and it will be a longer ride. this might prove to be demanding so make sure your bums are prepped and you've stretched...the rides about 350kms (depending on what route is taken)

hopefully the weather holds out (raj doesnt reckon it will so id love for him to be proven wrong)

p.s. if we do get the ride together and the weather's good etc. i shotgun not being TEC for either group, dont mind leading the faster pack tho

ALTERNATE ROUTE

Just a suggestion on getting to Whangarei, you will be legend with your peers if you take this route. Turn left onto SH12 to Dargaville (before the Brynderwyns) and go to Paparoa, at Paparoa, turn left onto Paparoa/Oakleigh rd (its a big green sign) 40 kms of awesome biker road, it comes out onto SH1 where you turn left and ride about 7 kms to Otaika rd, turn left and then is about 10 kms to Maungatapere then turn right and head to Whangarei...come back through Waipu/Langs...just a suggestion, not tell you where to ride, but watch out the road between Waipu and Whangarei...always cops. Have a look at a map and check out the roads have suggested, you wont regret it...Mark

hey guys so mark pmd me this alternate route up to whangarei and it sounds very very nice, had a talk to raj and he reckons that if we leave by 9.30 we shud be back in auck by 4 but we aint gonna be stopping round every corner like we did last time so its gonna be a prety intense ride going on for bout 450kms.

im really keen for this, so are raj and kim (who are the only other people that i have mentioned this route to) so let us know know which one you are keen on and we'll just do that route

cheers,
nish

Ill be keen but Ill have my bro pillion, and this is the first time Ill be taking a pillion almost as heavy as me on the R6, so will be taking it nice and easy... Had an awesome time at the coro loop today, with lots of knee scraping action from urs truly, had a lot of very skilled riders with me.

On another note, I don't have much spare gear for a pillon ( I have extra gloves, and a jacket, but no pants or helmet, and since I'm a prime advocate for safety...would any of you guys happen to have any spare gear lying arnd. that I could borrow for the ride? I'd appretiate it and in turn will not own ur noob arses so bad 2up) ;) rofl

EJ you were doing great on the last ride. It is not about trying to keep up with others. As I said before it is just having a good time and improving your bike skills. I think the Scorpio is like any other cruise style bike and is designed for long distance. Try riding a sports bike for an hour and you will get sore wrist, cramped legs back-aches etc.

I think that white GN you refer to is actually a CB250 hornet. It has a CBR250 engine in it. Don't be disappointed...it is just a start before you get a bigger bike perhaps one that is faster than a CBR Fireblade.

For the money you dropped into the Scorpio (learner legal), you could probably get a half decent 400cc. Apart from buying and selling a GN250, RGV 250 and GSX 250 for pocket money, I never actually rode a 250cc for my whole learners and restricted period i.e. had a Rebel 450cc and SRX400cc. Of course I did nothing to attract the cops during that time - but never got pulled up...

As for going up to a 400cc, within a week you'll have got use to the extra Hp and be looking forward to your next 600cc!

P.S. I'm keen for the ride to Whangerai - tho hope to have new shock in the rear by then...

I have 9 years experience and I am still learning how to ride properly. 4 and the half years riding 3 CBR 900's and i was finding it difficult to catch up with Isaac on his RF900 and DImitri on his KTM. SO as twinkle has said take it easy and build up your experience for now. No point having a super fast bike and not knowing how to control the throttle.

Hey hey, I am real up for this ride but it's down to how much uni work I get through.

I need a good valve tune as I only getting not much more than 200 km on a full straight tank. So any peeps here know what they're doing, get in touch cuz I am blowing my fuel like there's no tomorrow. I really don't dig taking my bike into the mechanic works, as they often over charge, plus half of them don't even bother fixing bikes under 1996.

They tell me, 'we only tune new bikes and you gotta take it down to sometime garage'.

Recommendations please, because I have been meaning to get this sorted for quite some time now!

Rest of ya's are probably all having a Uni Break at the moment, so good on you chums. :sunny:

Pump some iron ya pussies, as it will build your muscle strength and stamina.

It's also a matter of technique, a lot of people tense up when they ride where they should instead be in a firm but relaxed grip.

It's something I reckon everybody should learn, stiff body postures also gives you a more harsher turning angles.

It's something also that I am still trying to learn, especially over those long rides where ya doing 120 on a average. :D

I think you mean carb. balancing and syncronisation. Ask squiggles what sort of mileage he was getting as he had one of these not too long ago. It is quite a messy job Ewen best to let the experts do it. cost about 300 bucks and that is a lot of money.

Agreed. Told you all we are always constantly learning each time we ride our bikes. My new fireblade handles much better in the bends and no more backache compared to the last fireblade i was riding.

You know, I rang around some people say there's no use doing a carb balancing for a bike that's done 90,000 km and that's over 15 years old.

Then again, it can't hurt right? I posted this as a topic awhile back and I got a lot of reponses from people sayng that it can't be bad to give your bike a good tune up.
I mean, shit, any mechanics out there whose keen on doing some cheap jobs definitely or the sake of helping out a fellow biker give me a buzz.

I remember there was some guy out in Auckland whos a bike mechanic, posted on KB mentioning he's happy to tutor people during his spare time. Gave him a PM, got a reply but he didn't follow through, and flaked out.

I'll PM Stephen... Cheers.

Or attach a turbo and a can of nos! muhahahaha :done:

I think you should go you did a great job riding to and from waipu, if i come along you can ride with amateur me!!

please don't overtake me though it's kinda embarrasing lol

The only time when I can overtake you is when you runs out of petrol or when you get a flat tyre lol
Else, not in a million years

P.S. There should be 3 groups. Fast, Mid and "Single Cylinder Group" :) That includes FXR, GN, Scorpio, etc... but excludes KLR650

:sunny:

I have a long term trusted and qualified bike mechanic - that's worked on all 8 of my different bikes over the years. He works from home - so NO $75 an hour. I think he said around $150-200 for my carbs to be balanced on the RF (he's got the machine to measure the airflow or whatever it is, gas)? He's pretty cool too and has been prepared to teach me as he goes i.e. tightening a chain, bleeding brakes, changing a clutch, adjusting suspension etc.

I can put you in touch - send me your mbl via a PM.

Calendars are not hard ... u just go on the meetings and events tab and set up the ride... if u read carefully there is an option for location... if u fill this in the calender entry comes on its own... and yes Mark is a very experienced rider, and knows those roads well as he lives up north. I wouda taken his advice ! But bl man atleast u didn't have any prior demerits.. now u can join the club :)

oh and btw i pretty much timed myself on the ride...

we left at bout 10.45am, did legal speeds all the way, stopped for a pie at mcD's at westgate, 3 refuelling stops (1 at westgate, 1 at wellsford and 1 at whangarei), and bout 20 mins of stretch time in total and i was back home by 5

so if we meet at 9.30, leave at 10 sharp, everyone should be home by 5 comfortably and we can have a bit longer at each stop, so we have fewer but longer stops

sound gud?? hopefully stephen wont be late and raj wont get lost

I was thinking though... we could split into three groups, the slowest group being for the little thumpers that can't wind it out along the straights like the others can (or up hills... or into headwinds.... :bye:).

Three groups sounds like a good idea, especially if there are numbers like last weekend.
On the way home from Waipu a few of us ended up tagging along in the middle anyway.

But then again, no one will be speeding on this ride ,will they? :innocent:
So maybe there will not be a problem with keeping the groups relatively coherant.

Lol, depends on numbers, though. See who turns up...

Its a great cause and wont eat to much into your ride time i wouldnt imagine.

The ride you guys are organisings thread is six pages long and i havent read all of it so dont know the full details but thought it would be a good chance to get a few more bikes making noise aroung the sky tower if you all have time spare saturday morning and since you are starting your ride just around the corner why not.

Could be a plan Raj....out of the country for 10 days as of next Friday so need to get out this weekend....has number two ever been a pillion before?

Sorry Mark was out the whole day today fitting an sub and amp kit in my brothers car :pinch: roughly 1000 watts RMS weeeee....Hes ridden heaps before and is a good pillion, though hes a wee bit taller than I am... 6"4 and finds it very hard to sit on the R6, and I don't blame him coz it has a small triangular rear seat and ridiculously high pillion pegs. Mr. Bomma was nice enough to ride down from Hillsborough to lend me some v nice gloves and a helmet for him, so heres hoping he comes along... although when I took him for a wee blat around Riverhead he was badly cramped lol :( C u tomorrow at the gassy, and hopefully he'll come along:chase:

same here!

i got there a bit late, 10:40, found no trace, no chalk, no rubber, nothing.

so i got a full tank of gas and sped, non-stop all the way up SH1 to get to whangarei at around 12 noon. i rode around a bit looking for you guys, then went back to the highway just outside and waited,

and waited

tried calling people but didn't have numbers of anyone on the ride and couldn't get responses out of those with those numbers

i asked all the gas stations if you guys had stopped by

and got more gas

and waited.

about 1:30 i gave up and came back home, stopping for lunch at the bar by waiwera, and went back to symonds st around 4ish, no trace of anyone, talked to a guy, and came back home.

last time you guys left late and i didn't go cus i thought you left at 10:30, and this time you leave early and i come anyway! no fair!

best fun i had was chasing a holden, but he got caught by traffic after a while

I was quite struggling on the way to Auckland :weep:

But during the first two to three hours of ride, I was brainwashing myself with this sentence "EJ! The bike you are riding is NOT a Scorpio! It's an Aprilia RS125! It's an Aprilia! Aprilia baby! NOT a Scorpio! Aprilia! Aprilia! Aprilia!"

That really helped lol I was leaning like the RS125 guys on youtube lol

But on the way home, I was sooo tired, sooo hungry and the brainwash was over... Nevertheless, It was a Scorpio in the end :weep::crybaby:

Tied up again for tomorrow, so you guys have a good one y'hear!

The fella was riding a nice 2000 yamaha R6. He rode onto a big porthole before a right hand bend. Lost it rode into ditch skidded about 5m on the ground. Hole in the left engine cover oil spilling out. Forks bent and fairing scratched badly (well cracked). His helmet had deep rashes and his visor broke from his helmet. We told him to do a head scan. Right arm badly cut.

He is ok. Thanks to the farmer that offered a hand in storing the bike and pouring soil on the oily road. Apperently the farmer also told us that it has happend many times on that bend so be careful guys

Great ride today everyone. My bike was running better than last week. Thanks to Cycletreads not sure what you did but I was able to handle the bends much better than last week. No wheel spins. Cool Those riding tomorrow? have a good ride and be careful...

Along the ride when Ewen and me were catching with the rest of the pack there was a white Altezza that was trying to keep up with us. could see from my rear mirrors that we was going hard at the corners like a rally car but unfortunately did not have the speed to get near us. was fun all the way to wellsford.

we're a wee bit slow, i think we got to whangarei @ about 2:30?

Forgot whose but it was a blue R6 that had a wee off, just enough to disable it from riding (hole in lhs engine cover), came off on a RH corner that has a few problems on peak rd, all good apart from that :)

whada slow guy ehab! and there were people willing to give ya some $$ for petrol! :shit:

p.s. dont know what happened to macstar after whangarei? lost him at bk!

Yeah sorry guys. I went into Whangarei to find the ellusive BK but gave up after driving around in circles, so dropped in at a bakery. By then it was 3pm and I had to be back in Aucks at 5pm - so gassed it back, but I thought you guys had already left anyway... I was racing back thinking I'd catch up to you guys! Ah well.

I'm going to have a chat to Nish today. If we do another Coromandel ride, I know those roads well and could offer to lead the faster group on a well-planned course with one of many scenic places for a lunch stop.

Hi all,

It was a day of firsts for me.
First time ever past Wellsford and therefore first time to Whangarei. It's Beautifully up there, I need to go up and have a good look around.
First time I've ridden with a group of that size.
First time I've come across a crash, other than myself.
First time I've seen bikes fall over at gas stations (I won't name names, partly cos I can't remember them or I didn't find out).

I was having a relaxed ride back with the CBR250RR guys when I realised my bike had ticked over its 1600Km brake-in period. Sorry guys If I scared you flying passed but i had to give it some stick and feel the power for the first time. Plus it was getting a little dark with my tinted visor and I still had a wee ways to go.

I also got to check the range of my tank. I was with the small group that got lost. Without filling up in Wellsford, I was riding somewhere around Dargaville with the fuel light on. Pulled into the GAS station just out of Whangarei (didn't know we were just out of Whangarei) I put 16L into the 17L tank:eek5:

It's true that many-an-experienced rider has fallen victim in the Coromandel (I grew up there). But I think it's also got a lot to do with people viewing it as a race track and getting carried away - especially without knowing the corners that well.

For learners, there are some pretty tight turns i.e. 20-30kph but probably the main hazard would be fatigue if you tried to do it one day from Aucks as it is a really long slog.

I was chatting to Nish and I reckon Coromandel could be turned into an overnighter - with many campgrounds, accommodation places along the way.

Another awesome ride I've done a few times is a strict coastal ride from Akl to Rotovegas i.e. Papapkura out to Clevdon, round the coast to Miranda, over to Paeroa, through Waihi, Tauranga and then cut across to Rotovegas just before Whakatane. Don't know how many K's that is but it would be about 4.5hrs of solid riding. In Rotovegas there's a holiday park near the golf course which hires log cabins for $45 a night (sleep 3 people). The place also has its own hot pools - great for reviving after a day's riding.

I'd be keen to do this ride also at some stage - if the SMC chiefs are keen.

firstly, luke (the guy with the r6) is fine. his arms got a few scratches and his bike will be written off but the important thing is that he's fine. hes not on kb so ill let him know of all your well wishes.

secondly the ride on sat was AWESOM!!! tryna keep up with raj was insane and i lost him a few times (thanks for slown down and waitin for me to catch up). didnt think we'd ever catch up to the group dat took off after the bin but we managed to pass em well before wellsford :) the hard riding really took it outta me and i was wrecked when i got home

pity we lost the riders just before the turnoff on oakleigh but was gud to find em again at whangarei

gutted that i had to lead the slow pack through the twisties but stephen's done it pretty much every other ride and as the organiser i felt obligated to do it. you guys all did well and i saw some very good and mature riding from everyone (except raj) JOKES!!!

im workin this sat so i cant make any ride that will be on this weekend....also yea spoke to isaac (macstar) and rekon it wud be a good idea to do a weekend ride down to rotovegas via a coastal route

Definitely not :) Well not for the first 100km at least. We are talking of a different ride which is to Rotovegas where we might be passing thru Tauranga. Thought I will get it replaced.

But my current tyres should last the coro-loops without problems.
