I've got a friend interested in starting out in biking. He's got a bit of money to play with and likes the look of a particular ZXR250 for $4,000 from a dealer. It's got 67,000 k's on it which is a little high for 4 grand if you ask me, but it looks imaculate. Question is how do you know if this particular bike is legit and isn't going to run into trouble or greatly depreciate after a few kilometres. 1991 ZXR250.

67,000 kms! That is the end of that engines life cycle, if it was a larger capacity engine or fewer cylinders mabey it would be okay if it has had regular services (it's still high), but on 250cc 4 cylinder the parts are so small they just wear out.

Affman's ZXR250 was still going strong after 106,000 wasn't it?

It was probably on it's third engine, mines only on it's second.

Naa man as far as i could tell it was the origonal engine. And the last like 30-40 000 km was put on by me and CK so we know where it's been. But on the other hand $4k for a private sale looks about right but NOT from a dealer. a bike like that will have some problems and so (not wanting to insult the dealer) just say you have a regular mechanic that gets you sorted and would like him to go over the bike. If i was you and had 4k to spend i'd look to something newer like http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Road-bikes/Sports-tourer/auction-16195621.htm or http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Road-bikes/Sports-tourer/auction-16457039.htm or http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Road-bikes/Other/auction-16368517.htm. But what ever you do make sure a prepurchace check is done by a third party especially a compression test (find out it engine is fucked) and get someone to take it for a ride to "feel" out everything else (flatspots in carbs , dodgy suspension etc etc etc) . Good luck mate

Some good advice folks :spudwave:
$4000 gets more than what you are looking at.
Even if it is a year or 2 older but with half the K's is a better deal
The last thing you want is major repairs on a new purchase you have scrapped every dollar for

Is it just me or does this bike look almost EXACTLY like a little Ducati Monster?

I paid 4K for an 89 ZXR with 18,000 K on the clock but you never really can tell how many K's direct jap imports have on them. The best decision I made was to purchase it from a dealer. 4K may seem expensive but you always find out annoying niggles with the bike in the first few weeks. My fork seals went in 2 weeks (which can be pricey) but they were fixed for free. If it is a good dealer you have a little more peice of mind.
As for 67,000K, I would look around further as dealers frequently bring in containers of ZXR'S from Japan. In saying that I have heard the zxr's can last up to 80 -90K.

But again, I got my Zeal privately - under $2k.. was looked after and a very nice bike. the only thing I forked out for was a battery. went to a dealer to get a rough trade in price and he told me $2,700 - $2,800... and thats what i got (sort of)
I dont like going to dealers for a 250 coz of the percieved mark up... trade me is my friend...
and my fork seals for my cbr cost $37!!!! inc oil! cant beat that!

Yip they are the boys i have gone to for years and they have never steered me wrong. They always have plenty of zxr's but at the moment (about 2 weeks age) they had plenty of pretty good looking cbr's aye. All around the 5k mark but see if a bit of negotiation is available aye. :2thumbsup
