View Full Version : Third time in 6 weeks. 1/4 of my lifetime bin count

Mr Merde

35 years riding.

3 bins in 6 weeks.

First bin on the Auckland motorway 6 weeks ago. Taken out by a car.

Resulting in a scuffed up fairing and the need of new engine covers. Damaged AC joint left shoulder

2nd bin, silly little off on a very muddy road at very low speed (more like an overbalance than a bin).

Result in broken turn signal and very muddy bike. No bodily damage, pride takes a tumble.

3rd bin. Last Friday night. thought I would try out a shortcut home. Going down a hill I came to a narrow bridge. What i didnt see was the 3" drop just as I went onto the bridge and the 3" rise leaving the bridge. Over the bridge at about 60kph, susspension drops for the first 3 " drop, only 6 ft to the 3:
" rise. I've already committed to the left hand bend on leaving the bridge. Bike hits the rise and sends the bike into a major shudder. I highside over the bars and bounce down the road on my right shoulder and the side of my head. Short time later a car driver stops and assists me to get both my bike and myself off the side of the road. Must have lay there for about 5 min or so.

Helmet a write off. Damage to bike more cosmetics, seriously in need of some mounts straightened.

I go home. Shaken and stunned. Next day having trouble holding my head vertical. massive headaches. Go to my partners works do and not quite there. Stil massive headache. Sunday, absolutely knackered. Sore all over. headache still.

Today I call in sick. Go to physio for the work on my left shoulder from the first bin. Tell her about Friday night so she checks me over.

Whoaa. Two dislocated vertabra in my neck C3 and C5, depressed vertabra in the middle of my back T5, that in her opnion could be chipped. Bruising from my right eye socket to my right ear.

Headaches are from all the pain and muscle damage. I actually thought I wasnt too bad.

Back to ACC for another 6 weeks of physio.

If everything happens in three's then my lot is finished. If it doesnt then I'm screwed.

Everyone in my family telling me to give up bikes and get a car. Sod thatr for a joke. Too old to change my ways.

I'll take it easy, mend the body, repair the bike and get back on. Old bodies hurt more from accidents that if they had of happened in my youth I would have laughed off.

Biker hurt, biker humbled but still a biker.

:gob: Crikey! You've really been in the wars lately haven't you? But I love your attitude and your implaccable will to keep riding those two wheels!

I must remember that experience which you have paid the price for (and fortunately not too expensively I hope!) Glad to hear you got treatment and that the right people are helping you out, I guess your nearest and dearest are all trying to fight the impossible fight to get you off your bike!

Now I will definitely have to pay you a visit just so I can say what a crazy biker you are! Still a hard charger and never say die! :sweatdrop

Keep going hard, but make haste slowly when it comes to your healing!

Hard man award for walking around for a weekend with a broken neck....... or is it the I am to stubborn to go to the doctor award!

At least you still alive and well after two nearly serious bins, touch wood, and hopefully another 35 years bin free to come?

I can just feel the ACC money squeezing it's way past the moths as it gets sucked out of my wallet.

You bastard.

Glad you're (relatively) ok.

Next time go to the doctor.

Shit - an unmarked three inch drop and rise is a bit on the nose.

Is it worth complaining to your local council or Transit NZ?

Not just for bikes, mind you, but I wonder if some car owners with lowered suspension and those narrow profile tyres would get a bit pussey about hitting a three inch ridge as well?

I don't know enough about it, but a past boyfriend with the above setup used to get totally anal about things like that.

And you can cite your serious injury and prior decades of experience, stating that a more inexperienced rider could be more seriously, or even fatally injured. If you were really keen, you could even get your community paper along to the bridge for a photo and bit of a write up. They are always looking for local news, and are surprisingly well read by the locals.

Heal fast anyway, sounds like you'll be stiff and sore for a while.

Here's hoping the physiotherapist is young and pleasing to the eye . . . :2thumbsup

Gosh!

Well, I'm glad your injuries weren't more serious, dude. Although that's a fair bit of a pounding to take. Thank goodness nothing came apart in a big way, though!

I really will have to buy you a pint this week.

Shit happens in threes. At least you don't have to worry now about when the third event is coming.

I get totally anal bout things like that too LOL... :headbang:
I avoid SH27 going to Tauranga etc because of the bridges/roads that have big bumps n stuff... (in cage that is)

No luck Chris.
Hope you get everything relocated as soon as and back on yer bike.
So you have an allergy to motorway traffic, an allergy to dirt roads and an allergy to bridges.
You'll just have to save your riding for track days!
