Time to finalise a date for the Wild Waikato Wanderers.
After discussion with the crew on Clints ride, a choice was made for the end of Nov. After checking what events that I knew of (Burt Munroe etc), this above date has been chosen. I hope you can make it, and will post details as required.
Cheers,
Brent.

Awakino Hotel is happy to accommodate us. $45 per person, safe off road bike parking, and meals etc are up to you.
Contact# 06 7529815, mention that you are with the Adventure crew, and organise payment etc. Rooms are probably comfortable, basic units.
Raglan Harbour Hotel.
Charge by the room, with various options,(single, twin, family etc ranging from $60/room through to $120+).
Contact# 078258010.
Please register on the calender thread, and post your attendance here.
I will atempt to answer most questions, but I type like a retard, so don't expect much.
Below is a basic map. Book accom early, as both pubs are very popular.

I've tried to segment the map for a better view. This is the basic layout, but as we know, routes can be changed over a beer on the nights.
Probably 70% of the ride will be gravel, with only some of it being a bit challenging. This might encourage somepeople to give adventure riding a go. It wont be a "Blood and Guts " type of ride, social, enjoyable weekend, at comfortable night stops, similar to the Whangamomana weekend(hopefully without the rain).<_<

The road down the coast from Marakopa only has about 20km of metal now (not the 47 as per map). Take a diversion out to Waikawau beach. The tunnel to the beach is quite cool.

Tempting, I must admit but it looked like a couple of weeks away to do that and I can't find the time in Feb for that. (got a month off in march so have to work before that.....)
I'm hoping it is something I can do in a couple of years as it looks like the sort of ride that should be held annually.

Awakino, and the Raglan Sunset Motel are the accom points.
Please check the calender thread, and contact the Hotels to book your rooms.(mention the adv bike riders)
Leaving it too late may mean a quick hunt for accom in Raglan, but its very limited in Awakino.
On another note, I'm finding more interesting roads, so hopefully riders won't have to travel well known routes.
Will finalise the specific Sat ride once numbers/original locations are factored in.
UPDATE ON ACCOM.
We have booked the Awakino Hotel for Fri night. 06 7529815.
The Raglan Sunset Motel is now our Sat night Accom. 078250050.(the Raglan pub is booked out)
Please list your attendance in the calender thread. Numbers are limited to approx 15.
Accom costs to be finalised, but work off approx $70 per head per night, not including meals.

Other accomodation options:
As for the rest 3 dogs that have signed up for this ride in the calendar: Triboy has found out the Raglan harbour hotel is all booked out, I've stayed long time ago at the wagons at Manu bay, they're now called Solscape (http://www.solscape.co.nz/), wicked place to stay but 5 min away from the township, we could either ride there and not drink much, or get a shared cab both ways...
There's also the alternative of the Raglan backpackers (http://www.raglanbackpackers.co.nz/) they have obviously dorms but also shared room and twin rooms, they're in the heart of the township.... any ideas anyone else?

Accomodation wise, just call the Awakino pub and pencil yourself in. (mention your on the motorcycle Adv ride.
Sat night at the Sunset,in Raglan. We have different room options that I will finalise about 3 weeks out from the ride.
If we can get numbers up to about 12+, it will make for another enjoyable weekend.
Hopefully some Welly boys/girls will travel up, as I have a "special" route plan for them. (I will travel down to National Park, and escort them through some excellent back gravel roads).:niceone:

Okay gentlemen, I have checked out the Sat night accom at Raglan, and after throwing a few options around with Janette, (the Sunset Motel Manager), This is what I have secured. www.ourbeachhouse.co.nz
Really roughing it I know, but somehow we will survive:msn-wink:
Its about 5km out of down town Raglan, we have a courtesy bus available, (as does the pub), so drink driving is eliminated.:apint:
I have been informed that the Raglan Club does huge feeds in the evening at reasonable prices, and Aqua Velvet Cafe is the go for Brekky.
Numbers are limited to a max of 16,(the house has self contained apartments below).
Sat accom costs will be $65 approx (possibly less if 8+ riders front up).
People will need to register on the calender by Sat 10 Nov, so final details can be sorted. I really hope some Welly crew can make it, and if the weather is half decent it should be a great weekend.
Upper Wainui Rd is the house location on their web site. Not the Bach.
The bikes have safe parking, and the views at sunset should be pretty good. Geez I spoil you buggars.

Today I went and did a bit more of the ride closer to Raglan. Everything up that way is sweet, and I checked out the Accom while I was there.
I have tried a few other roads which may or may not tie in to this ride. The old Kawhia road has quite a slip on it,(been there about two years) and I don't think they plan to fix it as there is an alternate route, and the ground base looks very soft, and unstable.
I was going to try and get the Scrambler through by myself, but I erred on the side of caution, as there is little room for error, and the stream 12mtrs down isn't very inviting. However, a few helpers just to get it up through the soft bit, and it should be no worries.
Few pix from to day.
Pic 1 Eel Hotel. On the way into Bridal Veil Falls.
Pic 2 55Mtr Bridal Veil Falls.
Pic 3 Stroll in the ferns.
Pic 4 DOC workers who have good taste.(Buggers have fenced off Ruapuke Bch access however).
tri boy
19th October 2007, 16:00
So from the falls, I shot through Waimaori rd. Hope to include this road, as it flows nicely. Then through to Ruapuke Bch, where I found DOCs new wire cable fence. Can't complain, as the dunes are in good nick now, and migrating birds have started nesting in there.
A quick thrash around the seaward side of Mt Karioi, into Raglan for a snack, and fuel and then back around Karioi on the East side.:2thumbsup
Pic 1 Looks minor, but the entry, and exit points are narrow and soft. Too scared to do it by myself.
Pic 2 Not the most inviting area to end up in.
Pic 3 Ruapuke just waiting to be carved up.
Pic 4 Curses. It goes a long way to.

And the last few from the west side of Mt Karioi.
Pic 1 At least Doc has built a nice viewing platform near Te Roto.
Pic 2 View towards Port Waikato, from the platform.

Pic 4 View over Raglan from the western rd, Te Hutewai Rd.

If you call the Awakino Hotel, and pencil yourself in, (mention the ride), all will be sweet.
I'll do a final "role call" at the end of next week, so numbers are confirmed for the apartments in Raglan. There should be room to squeeze in any extra people, but will need to know by Tues 20/11. Any prefered brands? I'm a Tui man myself, so that will be in the fridge.

Travelling down Friday from Auckland, My initial thoughts were to leave early Friday and follow the coast down so thats a 7.00am start and get to Awakino by 6.00pm (yes, I know, nana pace...) However I am open to suggestions. Bass sounds like he wants a late afternoon scoot down the sealed roads.
Any others coming, going or meeting in between?
Any other times/ routes?

Hi Ian.
Still trying to get a decent online map happening. Hope to have it sorted soon.
The scale/size ratio is awkward, and I'm shit at this stuff.:baby:
Will post something this week, with some road names etc.
Tried Quick Maps, and I'm not keen to scribble all over my nice Land Survey Maps. Might copy, mark out, and scan them.

Bump.
Things are shaping up nicely guys.
A bit of an update. Fri, I plan to head to Owhango, meet up with Ian S, and sneak into Tauramanui via the old Hikamutu Rd. bvaut should be meeting us at the BP in Tauramanui between 1.00pm-2.30pm.
From there we are taking some more back roads to Ohura, and through to Ahiti via Waitaanga, Kotare, and then a quick run up hwy 3 to Awakino.:drinknsin
Young1 will be on his way up the same hwy, and the Auck crew will meander there way down through Waikato/Waitomo.
Next Monday I am doing the final Raglan accom sort out with Jeanette. (looks like we will have room for Ten, so its all good).
Now I all I will need to do is get a few cartons to the Raglan digs, and change the Scrambler rear tyre. (Gunna try the Mitas E-07).:2thumbsup

Hi Scott,
For online reference maps, I'll stick with those in post #5. They show 90% of the intended routes.
For the actual riders on the weekend, I'm going to scan the master copies I have, and hand them out at Awakino. Theres a few intersections up the back of Waitomo that can be a bit confusing if people havn't been through there before, and I would like everyone to have their own copies.
Thanks for the offer. And if you, or anyone else can make it to this ride, they are more than welcome. Looks like there is room to add 1-2 more. Maybe Quasie, or some one else in the Waikato who can't do fri night, might like to meet up Sat night, and do some Sunday riding with us.:niceone:

Popped out to raglan this morning on the Daytona, (wicked weather/ride by the way:bleh:).
Sorted out the payment for the house. We have secured the top main part that sleeps six, and one of the two bottom apartments that sleeps four. I hope to rustle up 2-4 out of Hamilton to stay as well, which means have the whole property to ourselves. So will PM a few people this week, as Jeanette will only hold it until this Sat for us.
As you see by the pics, we will be roughing it.
The beds separate into singles for those who may have concerns.

Very timely Triboy, I was just wondering how the whole thing was going.
The DR has had a full overhaul in preparation (kicked both tyres and poked the chain) and even got a wof, what more could you want!
I understand you're giving lessons on the correct pronunciation of "Waikato" so we don't offend the locals....I still don't understand why you just don't call it beer like we do up here tho. :bleh:

Don't think so. Raglan is good for linen, but maybe contact Awakino. I wasn't planning to. I'll phone Awakino today just to confirm numbers booked, and check re linen.:sunny:

From the looks of the rain chart, its moving quickly, so expect only medium/light showers on and off through Fri.
Can't see any signs of a stalled front, so alls good. (Will also prevent dust on the roads. Following bikes with hanging dust clouds is a pain).

Bass and I are leaving Papakura at 8.00am ish Friday and wobbling our way via the west coast to Raglan, Kawhia and Awakino over the day. Detailed route plans have been made which we will change at whim enroute.
If we're not there by 6pm we are definately lost!

3 copies of maps have been scanned, and now I just need a basic 1st aid kit, and the usual comprehensive Triumph tool kit:doh:
Weather is looking good, so camera's and sunblock also.:woohoo:
Late starters are more than welcome. PM me by Thrs night.
eta at Awakino Fri, approx 5.30ish.
I noticed through the week that the fuel station up the road isn't an early opener, so I suggest fueling up soon as you reach Awakino. If they are closed early we can have a long breakfast at the pub. I will ring the servo today to get opening hrs.:msn-wink:
So the Awakino petrol station has NEW owners that weekend. Gordon, the old owner normally closes at 10pm, and opens at 6.30am, but isn't sure of the new owners plans. I'm picking the hours will be similar.

Thanks Brent for the weekend, great company, roads & cuisine!
Seeing as he has glossed over it, I feel a fuller report is required of a certain stream crossing.....
Both Young1 and myself approached this with caution, as we were preparing to dismount and walk it, the scream of twin pipes and a defiant "Don't piss around, I'll show you how" was heard. There followed a series of wheelspinning and "Oh shit" noises and a large splash where Hinckleys pride and joy, complaining of the dusty conditions, decided to bathe instead of crossing.
Being of a helpful nature, Young1 dived for his camera while I tried not to fall off the bike laughing.
A high falsetto voice pierced the air.....something like "You bastards, this thing weights 200 kgs, come and bloody help". We looked about for the choir boy being assaulted by a fat bishop but eventually realised it was our very own exponent of british engineering making this noise.
After a moments pause to clear our eyes (tears from excessive hilarity) we "rushed" to help.
I tried to hold Tri-boy down long enough to get a photo but KTM riders are a bit slow with cameras (something about doing his hair first) and he managed to resurect the bike despite my best efforts.
I'd like to point out that those things don't push up banks very well, I almost got muddy!
Despite the best efforts of Lucas wiring the damn thing eventually started and a more cautious approach was made to the next crossing.
The Exxon Valdez was another story, and someone else can tell that.

Now watch those bloody rims rust.
Thanks CM, without your help I would of blown a poofer valve trying to dead lift it. And the hissing and gurgling sounds would of signaled the start of a frustrating "dewatering" exercise.:niceone:
Fortunately a quick sacrificial spray of CRC appeased the ghost of Lucas, "prince of darkness", and it coughed back into life.
Valuable stream crossing lesson learnt.

Many thanks Brent, for your organisational work.
I really had a ball. Even my bike having bit of a lie down just added to flavour of the weekend.
I must have got the bug bad, because as soon as the bike had cooled down enough, it had been cleaned, the oiler was relocated, a bolt and spacer that had mysteriously disappeared from the pack rack was replaced and the rear preload was bumped up. The last one really needs specialist tools or removal of the shock. However a bit of butchery worked as well and so, I don't need sloping ground to get it to stay on the stand any more.
She's ready for the next one.
Apart from brief usage of the major roads, pretty much everywhere we went, I had never been before. That actually includes much of the run down to Awakino and some of the run home as well.
I really had no appreciation at all of how stunning that part of the country is.
Please pass on our thanks to Kanny as well, for feeding and watering us all so admirably.

As alluded to in the reply from CM, there was a tanker seen on the trip, due to the hilarity that the appearance of this caused there has been a name change or rather an alias, however, so that I don't get caught up in any residual and ongoing litigation in regard to the original, the new name will be xon valdez. Luckily for a certain Orange rider he didn't require refuelling cos he would probably still be waiting.:devil2:

Ah yes the Exxon Valdez!! Ian made a great "tanker" captain and he certainly made the day in a couple of little country petrol tankers when he filled up the beast. I have it on good authority that he does get a bulk discount. As for the tanker crossing the creek, yes we did have the emergency services on stand by, there was a boom ready to put across the stream to stop any oil slick in case of an accident! But all credit to Ian he made the second crossing look very easy (now why were there screams at the first crossing demanding that someone take his glasses off?)
If you are ever lucky enough to ride with the three DR boys, be warned that there conversation seem to revolve around bottoms!! Must be an Auckland thing???

Looks like you guys had a ball since i left you at the eight mile. Well, i had an interesitng ride back to TA, the bike getting slower and any hill even slower again, drained the carby changed the plug checked the wires etc but not much improvement, if at all, but i guesss i got home and didn't have to push so that was a major bonus. so i guess it will be into the shop for some major checkup. or a relacement bike emmm??

I gave the DR's extras a good shake down on this one, although I didn't manage an erection, everything else worked as it should have!!
I took the round Mt Karioi road, took an hour to cover the 30km; had to keep a good eye out for 'oncomings' !! So at that point I gave away doing the river crossings again; I could see myself doing a Triumph impersonation without you guys to have a good laugh and that wouldn't have been fair, eh?? So, it was out to Oparau for smoko then on via Okupata and Pekanui rds to Ngutunui....some great ridn thru here....and on to Wharepapa Sth for lunch. Just a couple of tarmax riders there, Bryce couldn't understand just where all the bikes where on a nice sunday??
I was having an 'easy rider' kind of day and was tempted to stop somewhere nice and try that erection I had missed, and maybe just chill-out for another night....but instead I went home and cooked dinner for the Mrs when she got home from her trip!
Top weekend, thanks all for the fine company, see you on the next one. Jamie.

Nope, no requirement for erection, although there are plenty of places to pitch a tent if you so desire. There's an old cottage as well as the house there so there's lots of room. I'll give him a call tonight & enquire about availability. Probably look at either 12/13 or 19/20 Jan.
