When Jack Baker, 19 dropped round to see his girlfriend in Knowle, Bristol, he intended only to stay for a few minutes. So he left his specially designed prosthetic hand on his Suzuki DR-Z400SM.

However, the visit turned into a couple of hours… plenty of time for thieves to take the hand. "It was the first time I had left my hand on the bike. I came out and found the hand was gone. I thought it was my girlfriend's parents messing about but they said it wasn't them.

“I went for a look around but I couldn't see my hand anywhere. There were no kids about and no one to ask if they had seen it. I ended up jumping on my bike and going home.”

Fortunately, Baker had ordered another hand for racing, but has made a plea for the thieves to return his original hand, which would cost £450 to replace “I still need my old hand back. It was better quality and will last a lot longer. It's frustrating because my hand is no good to anyone else. I never thought anyone would take it.”

If anyone has any information, please contact Bristol Police.

I'd love to know more about how he races with a prosthetic hand! Would it work enough for him to brake or change gear, or is it just to help steer while he has all the controls on the side of his good hand.

Probably some happy kids playing Captain Hook as we speak . . .

My dad left his hand at a restaurant once, and they thought he was very strange when he called up asking if they had found it....

Motards seem to be fine to race 1 handed.
More balanced and you're not leaning over the front taking the weight on your arms so much.
