View Full Version : Good trails in North Canterbury?

Just did Lee's Valley last weekend, now looking for more trails.
Gravel roads are OK but would prefer some mud and maybe a DOC hut to stay in over night at the end of it.
Any recommendations welcomed !

Have you checked out Lake Sumner area http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=32746
It was a fav of mine when I lived in ChCh in the '70's so you'll see some of my old stuff linked there too. Access arrangements are slightly more restrictive now but there are huts up there if they haven't all been burnt down.

So ya didn't think to invite us on one of our favourite rides. I'm going to be startin to not like you. Just not feeling the love.
Did ya take any of the diversions in the Okuku end or just stick to the main road?

Again I can only speak from 70's experience Transalper and I've seen your pics of Lees Valley (none from peachvw and bugger he didn't invite you) but is that route still able to be done in a car. We took the Escort and the Hunter through there and the only mishap was in the winter the water was so deep at the river the Hunter got its horns drenched never to beep again so I bought new ones and mounted them higher. On a trail bike or a 4x4 easy peasy.

When the water levels in there are low I'd say no problem in a 2wd car so long as the car's not too flash, like covered in low skirts, and ya had some idea on fording so as not to go to slow and get stuck, or not so fast as to drench the electrics.
On a bike ya can do it on 100% street tyres most the time (not so well after a lot of rain or snow melt turning the clay bits to goo.

most of the fords have been concreted so towny's can get to Lake Talyor from there to Loch Katrine the holes have got deeper & the creek crossing just before the Loch is step & you can get stuck on it in a car other than that a great place for bikes & 4x4

That was a good day out, maybe not as muddy as you want, but still. it was SH1 to Greta Valley, down to Motunau Beach, along the back roads to Gore Bay (involves some gravel), into Cheviot, cut across Random Spur Road and gravel roads to Culverden.
As for DOC hutts, I thought you only got those on walking tracks, hope you aren't planning to give us a bad name by riding on walking tracks. That kinda behaviour is what's getting us locked out of more and more places.

WOW you really seem to have your claws out for this rider :(
I did not read it like that at all, I read it that he would love to go riding, and at the end of the day. stop at a DOC hut (at the end of the road, or near a lake etc) and then head home the next day.

We have lots of these huts in the North Island, and I am sure there are plenty down South too

Hey Transalper - dont be upset that I havent been in touch, just picked up the Gas Gas Pampera on thursday and sunday was the test ride... I'm keen to hook up for a ride out sometime though, PM me your details.
Lees was great on sunday, took it easy as a 2 stroke with knob tyre's in always twitchy in the dry  Met up with the 'dirt devils' who were giving it some on big KTM's / BMW's etc - nice people too.
I'm not into people riding in the wrong place eithier as it gives everyone a bad name and leads to gates etc... (they should ban horses, especially on the road!)
I haven't got a tent at the moment hence asking about the huts!

ScottLot's of huts listed there thanks Zukin, just not seeing any that you can actually ride too. Someone please start pointing them out.
I don't recognise lots of them so there is hope.

:niceone:Apparently some days I am easily upset:Oops:, just seemed you're back asking where good rides are again but after several open invites to good rides in this forum we still haven't met so don't know who you are. Thinking you're either very shy or snubbing us.
Dirt Devils, that be Dust Devils I suspect, some of them are here too. I assume DAS Phil was among them.
Also assumed you'd have been on the F650 that has been listed in your profile for a bit now.
We sometimes stay in cabins, pubs or Backpacker type places in small towns on the road between patches of dirt. Most the stuff we do locally is just a single day out. Like I said l don't personally know any DOC type huts that you can actually ride to, but would be interested to know of them if any are pointed out.
A new Gas Gas Pampera aye, do you need to run it in? I don't know 2-strokes very well. You'll be going up Worsleys soon then? I'd be in on that. Also go further a field to Big River Mine, Reefton sometime, keep in touch with Phil for that.
Back of Hanmer has some interesting hills better suited for lighter bikes too. More summery weather for them though.

I think TA is just feeling a little bit lonely at the moment. To many of the normal chch crew are a bit pussy wipped at the moment  :2guns:
As for back country huts that are rideable to, there are not a lot around canterbury. Those that spring to mind at the moment are the Lake Sumner Huts, Big river (not actually Canterbury but hey), Townshend hut. Of these the only one that doesnt need permission is the Big River hut. Further afield there are some down near Alex being the Potters Hut, one south of the Old Dunstand Road, Macetown Huts and Skippers huts (not sure if you can stay in these or not). Some of the ashvegas fullers were talking about getting permission to go through Mesopotamia to one of the muster's huts - nothing happening yet though.
If you want mud around Canterbury you'll be pushing it except river silts. Remember it is a big river gravel plain. Mud is best found round central otago or the north island.

Thanks again all.
I've ordered the NZ motorcycle atlas which apparently has some good routes in, bookshop still hasn't got it in...
I have had the GS on the gravel a few times but it's quite big and heavy for me so I have decided to keep it for road touring (perfect for me + wife like's it too )
TA - the Kennedy / Worsley loop looks exactly what Im after for a short blast, I will probably head down there this saturday if you are keen p.m. me.

Ahh - you cant ride Kennedy's Track. Part of it is over private land so no go at any time for petrol powered and it is normally closed to walkers and MTBers + others for lambing over August Sep. You could do Huntsbury Track or Rapaki and along the summit road with Worsleys as a loop. Good bit of wigley seal between the tracks that way. Some of the other tracks Bridle, Bowenvale etc might be paper roads but bit of bad form to use them. You will get enough glares from the treadliests and walkers on Rapaki but it is a legal road.

Phil at DAS does organised trail rides in the area (knows LOTS of tracks) reasonably often but you need to contact DAS on 389 0080 bout this. He was talking of organising a adv bikes (650ish) ride into Big river some stage in Nov/Dec. Will have to wait and see how it pans out though. The Napoleon Hill Tunnels would be a good side trip for the way there or back (now that I know where to go LOL).

What is the status of the Bridle Path these days as again in the 70's it was like a public road and we used to love zooming up and over to Lyttelton and back again on it? Does it have signs saying no vehicles now?

Wasnt sure so thought I'd do some digging. Found this (http://www.ccc.govt.nz/Parks/Publications/mp_bridlepath_1.asp)
Basically the Heathcote side to Summit road is a legal road and the Summit road to Lyttleton is a Historic Reserve. In 1988/89 there was an attempt to stop the Heathcote side road (Lyttleton side was already reserve by then) and make it a historic reserve but was not completed before the Councils were restructured in 1989.
Basically you can legaly ride the Chch side but I dont think you would be very popular and would probably encourage the change from Road to Reserve even faster (not that we can really use it at present anyway) as CCC are supposedly thinking about changing the status. I wouldn't recommend riding it (even though we can) as there are better places to get you kicks.
It was probably all you "old fullers" ripping it up that forced the Lyttleton Side change in the first place :dodge::innocent:

Yep, i'd go for up Rapaki or Huntsbry and down Worsleys. I'd not want to ride the DR up Worsleys at the moment but if ya wanted to play on Worlseys in both directions I'd meet ya there with me CRF230.
Just name ya time and hook up point. I'd prefer Saturday but can do either day.
I'd do Rapaki and Huntsbury too but those alone don't present any challenge even on road tires as such.

Of course we were young then, but it used to be a nice little blat after tea. Oh the loss of freedom huh!
Of course the early settlers (historically speaking) would have ridden a trail bike over there instead of a horse if they'd had them eh. I have historic connections to that track because Mrs merv is a descendant of voyagers on the Cressey - one of the first four ships.

Dude - you should claim your ancestral rights and go rip it up on ya WR LOL.
Seriously, even though you were young and "ripping it up" I still think you would have had more respect for others and the track that what youngns' would have today if it was open top the public. Worsleys spur is a good example of that. In 1998 when I got my first 4wd and went up there is was a challenging track but wasnt a vehicle breaker. You try and get a lightly modified 4wd with mud tyres up there now. I knew of a guy who couldn't go up so decided to cut the fence and go round a section - now there is no fence and the track is about 3 times as wide and even more challenging. One day it will be converted to a reserve as well.:oi-grr::mad:

It was more of a nostalgia ride than a challange, in fact I was disappointed at what they've done to it. It used to be fun ripping up there on the TS185. Yep, thanks guys, good to meet the mysterious peachvw, look foward to catching up again at school next Sunday.
Worsleys was very dry today so traction was a lot better than it had been last time I was up there, that'd be on the DR250 Djebel when I had it. There were however a lot of other users up there on foot and treadly to be careful of and try not to stir up too much.
I met the guys about 1/3rd the way up from the bottom gate as they were coming down. Then we went down to my van, back up to the top, back down to my van where cooneyr headed off. Back up the top again where Lugzy and Peach headed off, then I went back down and went home for lunch myself.
Had my only fall within the first 4 minutes, then survived the rest of the morning unscathed, was most happy to have taken the little bike instead of the bigin.
I can forsee myself doing a few more trips up there in the near future, such a good awkward hill to practice on.

Yep lots and lots of people on Rapaki. The cattle stops are great. Its been a while since I've been up there and was surprised and delighted not to have to open any gates.
Surprised that the ranger said the Bridle Path is a paper road. The official line (as per my link) appears that the Lyttleton side is a public reserve not a road reserve. Still it is perfectly legal to ride the Chch side.

All you have to do is keep an eye on this Adventure forum (occasionally the meetings/events one too) and turn up sometime, or start a new thread here saying when you want to ride and if you have a destination in mind or what kind of day you are after (technical potential for a drop or a nice user friendly day out that my partner would also be keen to do) and it will happen just like this one did. We'd all like to meet you too.
My partner and I also do stuff your XL200 would be perfect for too. If you have some spare time on Sunday 9th maybe you'd like to join us at the riding skills day, $40 pay at DAS. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=55655) A few people have said to me why am I bothering to go, but I say as a self taught rider there I things I just do not know about body position and expect to learn some basic tips on bike setup and things to make basic maintenance easier etc. Then there's any bad habits I don't know I have that are getting in the way of making the ride easier (not faster).
All sounds good.Im lucky to have both bikes.Honda is a great wee bike and has an excellent fuel range so has been through Lees valley as has the Bemmer. When I ride on my own on shingle usually on XL as i can pick her up.BMW a heavier beast if i come to grief(need a bit of help to get her upright!!)
Riding skills day would be great but Sundays are usually out for me as its the start of my working week.Phil & Linton are good guys who help to keep me on two wheels:2thumbsup

Must get my son to show me how to do the multiple quotes
Jeffersons fracture (C1) not good:( presume you were in a Somi brace for a while ??
Europe for a month -lifes tough:niceone::niceone:
You've been doing you research I see. Nobody told me it was a Jeffersons fracture but after a little reading that is defiantly what it was. Interesting in that they typically occur from axial loading which helps explain my crash. I've never figured out exactly what happened. Yes I was in a SOMI for 6 weeks - made sleeping rather fun! Pretty right now apart from a bit of stiffness when turning my head to the left. Pretty luck overall!
Europe for a month without the inlaws would be fun but with them - we'll see.
Multi quotes are easy - just click the multi button at the bottom rhs of a post so a yellow box appears to next to it. Can click multi for as many posts as you like then the last post you want to quote you click quote. They appear in the order you click them I think (not really taken much notice). Just make sure when you edit things that you keep the quote tags at the beginning and end of the quoted post otherwise you end up with what happened in the post I'm replying too.
Cheers R

Yep, some of them Dust Devils already ride with us and they have been mentioned in other threads. The last time I looked at what's involved in joining them I was still too young and you had to join the Retreads first. Personally I am more interested in partaking in this online community.
Then there's a sub to pay for the DDs which we just don't have here, although donations and purchases of KB murchandise do help with running costs of the site.
Then of course there's this notice on their site...which I had heard rumored was being discussed with in the Devils commitee
29 Aug 2007: Update on membership. Sorry the Dust Devils max membership quota has been reached. We're not taking on any new Devils at this time.
That's something that I believe will never happen on KB.
