View Full Version : Rear tyre blow out

Urg. Had a nasty rear tyre blowout on the RF tonight on the way home.

Four week old Avon Azaro with about 1500kms on it. Found a large (2mm wide) hole in it once I got home so its a goneburger. Damn...

What got me was how fast it happened. I was overtaking the cars on River Rd just before the left hand turn to Riverstone Terraces and heard this loud "pop".

Hauled on the anchors and tipped it in to the right hander for Moonshine Bridge and everything fell to pieces. It was all I could do to drag it round the corner (went right over to the wrong side halfway through the bridge) and stopped on the side of the road.

How the hell I didn't collect the cars coming the other way over the bridge I'll never know.

My angels are looking after me today.

:(

damn thats no bloody good man, glad youre allright.
So is it covered by manufacturer warranty or anything? or is is fork out more $$ for replacement?

You gotta be kidding Danny.

What manufacturer would warrant against a nail going through a carcass?

I'm afraid its $$$$ :weep:

Shit a brick dude!!! Your a lucky boy alright! Glad your ok (RF owners unite :msn-wink:)

Be interested if it's covered or not. I would imagine with the very nature of a tyre that they would need to inspect the tyre before they paid out, too easy to run over something nasty which is obviously not going to be covered.

Very very lucky dude.
Hey you mean 2cm not 2mm doncha??
2mm could be fixed with a decent plug for commuting anyhoo

Same thing happened to me on the way to the March Hare this year.
90km/h through a series of 75km/h bends and "bang". I thought I'd been shot!
I also managed to keep it upright but also drifted over to the other side.
Buggered up my weekend. Main difference was I knew it was worn, even had a new one on order, but thought I would get one last ride out of it.

Never again!

 ooh, glad to hear you made it out of that situation A-ok! :sweatdrop

Yep, your asphalt angel was making sure the coast was clear to help you big time! Got piccies to show the damaged tyre?

Jebus Simon. That bridge has got enough victims!

Good job keeping it upright, it's enough to scare the crap out of most people! Lucky you didn't get cleaned up by something coming the other way. Pity it's a near new tyre that bit it :(

Glad you saved it mate and that you are still with us.

Bugger about the tyre, it always seems like that its never an old tyre that attracts the nails.

Yeah, I have only ever had two punctures and they were both on near new tyres. Funny thing is the bike shops keep telling me its older tyres that are more likely to puncture.

You should have fitted a Storm instead of the Azaro...

It's a joke between Riffer and me regarding tyre choices...

But does the Storm get all sticky and gummy when you fang it over Grays Rd?

I like that about the Azaro...

It's a joke between Riffer and me regarding tyre choices...lol oh ok, I thought it was something like a tyre filler to prevent tyres going down so quick.

I can't speak for Grays Road. Every time recently I've tried to fang around there I've encountered stultifyingly slow traffic. But the Storms I had on never looked like letting go anywhere, dry or wet. The only bad aspect was the rear got a bit twitchy over its last 500km, but after 14,000km I wasn't complaining.

Yeah so 1994 I buy my VFR new and bugger me its already got a plug in the front tyre - Sawyers said "oh yeah we punctured it on a screw riding it from the workshop to the showroom". Then many moons later the first set of Michelin tyres I put on it I'm zooming over the 'takas with the Ulysses boys (Richard from TSS etc) and bugger it get loose on the corners and I'm thinking holy shit have I bought a compound that won't stand my normal riding - so a whole lot of rear wheel steering later I pull into the Mobil station at Featherston and there's the bloody nail in the tyre. So I pissed around fitting a thread type plug while the others rode on. Got it properly plugged later of course. So the bike shops don't know squat eh - old tyres don't puncture, just the new ones.

This is bit too scary mate... I have an RF900 which had Storm on it with about 1000km. It also got a major puncture last Saturday that deflated in a matter of seconds. What ever sliced my tyre, went right through and sliced the steel radials!! I had a passenger on the back and was doing 80ish kph around a corner at the time. It was also a bit hairy, not as bad as yours, but I manged to pull over and dismount. My slice was about 15mm long and went through the tread part of the tyre (i.e. the thickest part). Tyre was rooted needless to say!

I'm fairly certain there's no steel belts in Avon tyres buddy.

Kevlar AFAIK.

But interesting though. Like yours mine deflated almost instantly. Could the Kevlar belts have anything to do with it?

Oh true! The tow truck / tyre guy told me the innerwall tyre deformities surrounding the slice were the steel radials all bunched up after being cut. Ah well, maybe the kevlar then...

Aramid, not kevlar. Still synthetic though, not steel.

A-hem.

Aramid Fibre ( Kevlar / Twaron )

Background

Aramid fibre is an aromatic polyamide, better known by tradenames such as Kevler (DuPont) and Twaron (Teijin Twaron). As such, many different grades are available, with properties to suit various applications.

It is produced by spinning a solid fibre from solution.

Key Properties

Typical properties include:
Usually yellow in appearance
High strength
Good impact resistance
Good abrasion resistance
Good chemical resistance
Good resistance to thermal degradation
Compressive strength similar to E-glass fibres
Some grades of aramid fibre can degrade when exposed to ultraviolet light

Applications

Some applications for aramid fibres are listed below. It is usually used as fibre reinforcement for polymer matrix composites.
Ballistic protective applications such as bullet proof vests
Protective apparel such as gloves, motorcycle protective clothing and hunting gaitors, chaps and pants.
Sails for sailboats, yachts etc
Belts and hosing for industrial and automotive applications
Aircraft body parts
Boat hulls
Fibre optic and electromechanical cables
Friction linings such as clutch plates and brake pads
Gaskets for high temperature and pressure applications
Adhesives and sealants

I can't speak for Grays Road. Every time recently I've tried to fang around there I've encountered stultifyingly slow traffic.

I've notice a dark blue unmarked patrolling that stretch of road lately. Came up behind it and was just about to pass when I noticed the disco lights on the back shelf. Had to back off very quickly. Lucky for me he was not watching behind.

Brown trousers time man! lucky call, been running pirellis ever since i've been on the 600, never had a proble, you musta had a faulty tyre there?

Bugger about the tyre, it always seems like that its never an old tyre that attracts the nails.

I guess it's the luck of the draw then. I've had 3 rear tyre deflations, all pretty gradual, (1 on the RF and 2 on the Trumpy).
In every case, it was when the tyre was getting close to replacement time.
I remain surprised at just how thin motorcycle tyres are however. There really isn't much rubber between the air and the road.

Man, its been a long time since I had a rear go, but I am always in some fear of the front going.

Keep off the anchors if it does?

One new Avon Storm AV56ST 180/55-17 fitted nicely. Just needs mounting back on the bike and scrubbed in.

Damn. And it's custody weekend too. Always happens like that doesn't it...

Let's add another $300 to the KB Spend-athon. Makes it nearly a grand for me this month. :crybaby:

Anyway - check out the hole in the old (hah!) tyre.

Not good. Very large.

Mac at Maidstone gave me the tyre back. Says Beaurepaires can throw a mushroom fix in the hole and it'll get me by in an emergency.

That looks like just the right sort of hole to have a plug in it. Slits are the ones that are no good.
