So I've got my BMW Dakar, and I'm now looking to put some sturdy crash bars on. Trouble is that I am not particularly pleased with the seemingly limted protection offered by the SW Motech bars.

Given the limited alternatives out there for the Dakar, my thoughts are turning to the idea of ahving some bars made up - and this gives me both a clean sheet of paper and a number of questions:
- does anybody have any tips (do's & dont's) when designing a set of bars?
- can anybody recommmend a fabricator (Wellington)?

Looking forward to your comments and thoughts,

OV Lander.

I have a similar issue with getting crash bars for my Pegaso 650. The water pump on the RHS is very exposed in a fall. Hepco and Becker bars were expensive and looked bad (those for an F650 may be better though). So I modified some Givi bars for an XT660. Although the XT has the same motor, the top mounting point needed modification. Metalworx, who are opposite Motorad in Wellington, did the mods - and did an excellent job. Give them a call. I asked if it would be easier to build something from scratch, but they said thay the would struggle to bend pipes in the tight radius of the Givi bars. Attached is a picture of the bars.

Hence, I suggest that you look at the Givi and Hepco and Becker websites, then give Metalworx a call.

I know what you mean about the look of the Wunder(lich) Wings (H&B), but they certainly look as though they would keep the top half off the ground too providing a good level of all over protection. Might also serv to stop a leg becoming jammed underneath - but woudl they dig into the dirt and cause an even bigger mess?

Thanks for the tip with MetalWorx also.
