Hi all,
I own a 05 Kawasaki 636 and I would love a tank bag for it, as it is really anonying having my pockets full of stuff like wallet, keys, phone & other bits and pieces. The issue I have is that with the 05 Kawa, the front half of the tank is a plastic cover, therefore the good old magnetic tank bags dont stick. I really had my heart set on the ventura Mallory tag bag, but it doesnt stick that well at the front of it due to the plastic.

Has anybody else had the same issue and how did you over come it? or has anybody got any ideas on this?
Cheers

I have Plastic tank on the Daytona
so my best option was a clover tank bag as it has suction pads to grip the tank which you screw up and it seems too stay in place rather well
the only down fall I have found with the clover tank bag is that the waterproof cover went hard and cracked rather quickely
but overall the tank bag is good and although I have a sports option $180 you can get and expandable option too $230 prices are approximate

I've got a magnetic tank bag that I don't use because
a) it can come loose at over 120kph, which though I'm a fairly conservative rider, even I go faster than that when I'm overtaking
b) the magnets are really strong and can fuck with your digital cameras. Not recommended.
I'm looking at taking it to a canvas shop and getting some straps sewn on instead, and taking the magnets out.

Hi there, we have an Oxford tank bag on the Triumph Sprint, the base of it attaches with straps, one around the bottom of the tripple clamp and the others, under the seat and around suitable bits of the frame, the tank bag itself zips onto the base and has shoulder straps so you can remove it and use it as a back pack. Works for us!

Here's a pic of said "strap on".. :shifty:
The bag is upside down.. so you can see the clips.. & it's fluffy under there too..
ps: The brand is "gypsy"

Magnets have a nasty habit of stuffing credit cards, so be careful about your wallet in a magnetic tankbag.

Ive got an oxford tank bag. I used to use the magnetic base on the old RF900 and I have bought the clip base for the same bag to use on the Aprilia's plastic tank.
Takes a bit more set up time but works well.
Ive found there gear well constructed and takes a heap of knocks.
I have lost an oxford tail bag off the back of my bike at 100+ kmh and to cut a long story short it ended up living for 3 months in a tree over winter before I recovered it and all the contents was still in good condition. Even my cell phone still worked!
I reccomend it:yes:

wow you lot reply quickly. Well I'd hate for my credit card to be wiped, so i may have to opt for a strap on........bag, that gypsy bag looks good. However not a great fan of fluff anywhere, prefer my bag to be fluff-less :p do you have a pic of the top side of that bag MyGSXF?
May so also follow those oxford bags up as well, hope they arent too tall, its all a very good excuse for another ride up to the hamilton bike shops;)
One other thing, with the strap on bags, are they easy to fit, do the straps go under the tank and will I have to remove/loosen the tank to get them on? or do they go around the tank?

you choose wisely
I used that tankbag when I had my old XV750.. which was really easy to fit it onto.. but I haven't actually tried it on my current plastic fantastic.. sooo umm.. I can't tell you what effort is required to fit said straps.. possibly may have to tank the tank off.. :wait: Once it's on though.. ya just leave the straps there.. & unclip the bag as required! :niceone:
woops.. forgot the pic of the top of the bag.. I bought it back in about 94 ish...
here ya go..

I got a cheap 'Can' bag for $50, it has two ears that are magnetic, but it ended up in my lap at 130km/h a few days after putting it on. It has two plastic triangle doodaas each side, I ran a bungee under the tank (carefully) and attach to the front two lugs, it hasn't moved since. It's bloody brilliant having somewhere to put all the stuff I used to jam in my pockets!

Could possibly do that  You can buy the strips with self adhesive backing, & stick one half on ya tank & the other half on ya bag.. might look a bit ugly on ya tank though.. when the bag isn't on there..

I've used a magnetic tankbag for years.. doesn't leave 'scratches' per say.. but more rather some rub marks. Ya can get clear laminate protector stuff that ya can stick on ya tank, to protect it. I've never looked into it.. but I've seen plenty of bikes with it on. Ask at ya local bike shop.. or bound to be someone on here who uses it. :Punk:

Ventura's luggage, like their rack systems, while functional is underspecced compared to luggage made by other manufacturers like Oxford and RJays.
I have had an Oxford tankbag for nearly five years and it's terrific. Mrs H recently procured a smaller Oxford for her Bandit (watch out for paint damage if metal objects like rusty staples attach themselves between the magnets and the tank).

Yep, we put a tank bag on our 600 Bandit for 20 minutes and it's scratched the tank. As you can imagine, the tank bag went straight into the bin and the bike's never had one on it since! Suzukis have shit quality paint anyway...

We use Ventura seat bags on our 636s. We both have the 14 litre Assen bags.
They have a seat pad that fitted to the rear seat base then the bag clips onto the pad. We have know problems with them at speed. & they are large enough to take our wet weather gear, puncture repair kits, carmera etc.
There is also a smaller 10 liter bag.

My tank bag rubs the front of the tank because of the fairing, I got the clear laminate protector stuff from bike shop, $13 for 1/2 metre or $26 for whole. Goes on well but have noticed it is shrinking a little leaving the sticky edge exposed (rubs off easily).
I always check the magnets every time I put the bag on as it often picks up crap which does scratch the tank, also taking it off you have to peel it not pull it.
My tank bag is just a $60 red baron special, holds on well, well except for the other week, at 190 it was sucked into the steering head, not sure how that happened.
I carry my digital camera in it all the time, have never had an issue with wiping or anything. might have to do a little experiment, if I put a screw driver in there and it becomes magatized then I suppose it could be bad ... my guess is it wont as the magnets need to be wiped across the object and when the bag is on the bike the magnets are on the sides of the tank - no where near the contents of the bag, only when flaps tucked in is when it could happen but again the items aren't really be wiped across them.

Its something Im going to have to look into too. Trying to go away for a week two up means Im gonna need all the storage I can get. Only problem is the Duc has a bump in the middle of the tank where the breather comes out so the bag will have to sit really far back:weep:Guess Ill be looking for a very small one

Before I bought my tank bag, I did some research WRT magnets stuffing up bank cards, cameras, etc. It's not a problem! I suspect this rumour is either just urban myth, or comes from someone with a crappily designed bag.
With my bag, despite it having very strong magnets, there is enough padding etc in the bottom that there's no measurable magnetic field in the bag itself.

So it's those fucken magnets in my tank bag that do it! I had noticed an alarming correlation between riding my motorcycle and the depletion of funds in my bank accounts. Now I know what's causing it I shall throw my tankbag away.

I was reading a UK bike mag (last months) and they had a bike in it with a plastic tank. The bag they used had a replacement "ring" that goes around the filler cap, the bag clips to that and the writeup said it didn't wiggle etc. I left the mag in Ohakune but a google should do it.

i saw a neat one at my bike shop, a strap on one. might look at picking it up eventually... would be handy for stuff i dont want moving to the bottom of a full backpack [specially small stuff like coins that are impossible to find again!]

Store a magna-rug in the tank bag, it will take all the stresses away.

Go the Oxford magnetic tank bags.
My one survived being flung down SH16 in a highside and has subsequently been tested at over 250kph (on closed private roads, naturally) without any adverse effects.
