Do the police bikes have speed radars that can get you while they are moving also?

Its just i was speeding along and a cop bike came round the corner and i slowed down but he never turned around or anything.

Cheers

Last bikey cop I talked to, said although his didn't have one fitted at the time, he showed my the provisions for it on the bike.

From http://www.police.govt.nz/resources/2005/speed-enforcement-guide/

staff may use a motor cycle as a power source for a laser speed detector, but are not to pursue speeding motorists themselves when undertaking this activity due to the risk of damage to the laser device. However, this does not apply when speed detection equipment is being operated on a motorcycle as part of a specific trial approved in writing by the National Road Policing Manager.

So the answer would be no.

Ahh ok. I saw him out the back roads of clevedon today. i think maybe just a cop going for a joy ride!

I've seen them out there a couple of times having a cop with a laser, and then the bike sat around the corner, obviously waiting to pickup anyone going a tad too fast.

Why do they even have cop bikes if they can't chase and ticket people?

Karma

Well that's not what it says...

All it says is that they can't run the radar at the same time as the bike cos they might break it, however, they could match their speed to yours and use that as evidence if they're moving, they can also be used in other areas such as red light jumpers etc...

Oh right, read it wrong.

But I guess that's partly why there aren't many riding around, they're all at the side of the road in an open space that all motorists can see from 100m away (aka behind bushes) waiting.

The police will be getting new K12s over the next 12 months and these will be fitted with radar.
The current fleet consists of BMW R1150RTs with a few ST1100s hanging on, a few of these older BMWs are fitted with radar as a trial.

Technically they're not supposed to do that either, I would imagine that if you got a ticket in a case like that you'd have grounds for appeal.

Again from http://www.police.govt.nz/resources/2005/speed-enforcement-guide/

all speed measuring devices are to be operated in an overt manner. No form of hidden or camouflaged deployment is to be used, although nothing in these guidelines impugns the use of unmarked Police patrol cars for speed enforcement;

Hahaha, bull. I'll have to start taking photos of the camera vans around here, make a thread of it

Hmm... well the camera van itself is an oddity I'd imagine, I'm sure the cops on here could clear it up but it may be they fall more under speed camera legislation as opposed to radar guns.

They're usually tinted glass plain white vans, nothing obvious about them eh.

I have seen a red one on the North Shore................tinted windows still........must be trying to catch us out eh?

Around here (same place as coyote) they used to use white ones, then "they" got a red one thats a prick because it doesn't stand out so well.

The latest one is dark green, the same colour as the bushes they park it up next to.

They really do push the boundries of concealment too, you can see them clearly from the road....after you have got within spitting distance of them!

Karma

Depends how much you wanted to push it... to be honest there's a lot of stuff that coppers get up to over here that could be described as either against the law, or at least against the spirit of the law.

Yes they have laser, and some have radar, but not able to use either in Mobile Mode. The new ones are coming out with the ability to use radar on Mobile mode.

As for hidden vans etc... it would be better if they parked in the middle of the road with red and blue flashing lights on, and with signs at 1km intervals, for the previous 10kms perhaps while approaching, warning of the imminent camera van ahead..

You know what? They would even then still be able to take pictures....

I love the story of the guys who nicked the plates off a camera van, stuck them on their own vehicle and then went up and down the road "getting" tickets. Would be great to do in the same coloured/make of van!.

The point being??

That one is right up there with the CDs hanging from the mirror..or
the 'do over 150kmh 'cos they're not allowed to go over that when chasing you...or
the 'eat those smelly things from the urinal before you leave the pub - they can't get a breath reading if you do that

Ahhh, where would we be without urban myths.....

In saying that though... I have had two different plates taken from my patrol car... The first while I was dealing with a boy racer impound a year ago and the second while I was at hospital getting blood sucked from a crashed drunk disqualified driver... neither plates have shown up on film, but love the myths... keep em coming!!

Yes, I've always thought that "do over 250 kph 'cos their cars can't go that fast" seemed like a safer bet...

Nah, SPUD, that ain't an urban myth, its true, I tells ya all... Try eating two, makes the reading even lower.... and the smaller those urinal thingies are, the more stronger the effect on your alcohol reading....:niceone:

We still have the bar of soap in the EBA room loo at New Plymouth with the huge bite taken out of it.... guess his teeth needed a clean after he washed up after having a nervy pee?

A pissed driver washing up after having a pee... Bwahahahahahahahaha... like that ever happens...

I prefer the stunt pulled in American Graffitti where the cops had their cars' bum chained to a post.

I can't recall how many times I've seen that movie but I laughed my arse off the first time I saw it and I still do.

Why do they even have cop bikes if they can't chase and ticket people?

Primary reason is to attend incidents! (crashes, blocked roads etc when cars cant get thru such as Aucklands 24/7 gridlock!!!! )
but do issue notices for speed and other infringements observed during the course of our duty

Secondary reason is it keeps me off my own bike or worse my digger (and you DON'T want to be chased by my digger......no street creed with ya mates being caught by an old fart on a WHAT!)

My comment was more of a jab at police vehicles seemingly only being used for dishing out tickets.

What does it take to become a bikie cop? I'd be keen

'cept you can never go faster than the radio waves. I never understand guys doing a runner and thinking that the cop behind them is all by himself and not able to call ahead .... duh!

Just wait - some Suzuki fanboy will appear and claim is GSX-R1000 K8 blah-di-blah can now go faster than the speed of light.

Still, cop might be able to radio ahead, but unless there is someone ahead ... Consider someone on the northwestern motorway doing a runner. How many junctions in the space of 5km? 3 or 4, anyway. Provided the plate's not been seen, there's sod all chance of the cops being able to cover every junction. All one would have to do is disappear off into the backroads, never to be seen again.

Purely hypothetical speculation of course, and would a good post to be #666.

I was thinking about at one point, but the bike cops fall under HP area, I just know that I wouldn't be able to live by the rules the police have to follow.

Besides, think of the social outcasting!
