Bit of a deal on at "the Mill" brand bottlestores -

Laphroaig 10yr old 1000ml $56.95

That is not a misprint.

Apparently they are importing it themselves hence the dealness of it all.

Not sure if anyone outside of Welli can share in the good fortune though.. you guys down't mill?

What is Laphroaig 10yr old? Surely for $56 you could get a new bottle?
Seriously though, whats it normally worth? Might get it for the old man

Laphroaig is delicious scotch whisky from an isle called Islay. It has a full on oily/smoky/peaty flavour.

Normally 700ml will set you back $90 to $110 so this is a steal.

There is a Mill in Wellington, Victoria St or in Porirua by Kenepuru Drive. There should be more around than that.

http://www.themill.co.nz/ is their website address

It would appear to be a nationwide chain of stores.

So, tell me if I must, and I will. How you going to pay <_< :)?

Ok whats better, the Dalmore 12YO 750ml or the Laphroaig 10yr Malt 700ml...?

From a personal preference perspective I'd go the Laphoaig.

Bear in mind that older isn't better in the Single Malt world, it merely reflects the amount of time the stuff sits in the barrel. Unlike wine, it doesn't change its character in the bottle. There are plenty of experts who will rate an '80s 10 year old Laphroaig over a '70s 18 year old Laphroaig. The quality of the barrels was apparently better.

I'm more of a Glenmorangie man. I really like smooth and rounded single malts like the Nectar D'or.

Is that 10 YO Laphroaig bottled at cask strength? Don't drink it neat - it is like drinking paint stripper.

James Deuce
25th June 2009, 21:22
Nectar D'or is a sauterne finish and reminds me of orange flavoured toothpaste.

Anyone suggesting that you drink single malt any other way than neat, clearly isn't a fan. Laproaig could hardly be considered paintstripper.

There is a 48%abv "cask strength" 10yo, but for $49.95 you get the tax break 40% version.

Which I have in front of me now, yum.
I do prefer it to the recently departed Ardbeg 10yo, it is smoother, and for me has a better balance. The Ardbeg can be a bit salty.

Tosh. Ardbeg is the hairy-chested bovver boy of malts. Little sophistication but personality in spades. I love it. I guess it's not to the taste of the girlies sipping their breakfast malts...

Why is it cheaper than 5 years ago? Is it because it's 5 years older?

James Deuce
25th June 2009, 22:57
No. It doesn't age in the bottle. The age is taken from how long it sits in Sherry, Port, Brandy, Madeira, or Sauterne casks.

It's cheaper because some distributor has over stocked on a luxury during a recession.

So it's not like sausages, for instance, in that what used to be $10 is now given away for free five years later?

I'll go back to my tea.

Remember to read the fine print:
2004 $59.95 for 1 litre
2009 $49.95 for 700 ml

Not saying it isn't a bargain... just that it's not cheaper than 5 years ago.

We were just drinking Laphroaig on Saturday night for a friend's birthday. The bar tender couldn't pronounce "Laphroaig" or "Islay." Poor thing got a bit of a ribbing.

You misunderstand, Grasshopper. I find both excellent in their own special way. Choice of malt is a matter of mood, time and place. Anybody who drinks only one, or even a selection, is denying themselves one of the world's Great Pleasures -- to stand spellbound in front of one's whisky cupboard deciding which one to partake of. Bliss.
