Wow I didn't even know such things existed.
The $820 is OK but the expenses to come might make you gulp. Still, it's a shame it's so far away.
And to think I was lusting after an NSR250...

What a beaut! Wish you'd told me earlier, my old man was interested in getting a GP rep 2-stroke.

Nothing like a few phantom bids to push the price up some more :D

Why 3 pipes?

Why 3 pipes?
Because it's a real bike, and not some crappy 4 stroke piece of poo.

Hi
Dirty Honda pulled the plug on spares for those unique to the bike.
This includes engine parts I'm told.
Suzuki still provide excellent back up on the RG400/500 at this stage
so I'd go for one of those (if I hadn't done that already  )
Some of these NS400's were sold new unrestricted with high reading speedo's.
I think the v3 engine was reversed to what freddy spencer rode in the GP days.
The swingarm is cast and ahead of it's time, at least one write up said if the honda was 500cc it would have been the best over the RG and RZ.
Still all good
Cheers

Why 3 pipes?
Because it's has a 3 cylinder engine (V3)./ About 70hp from memory, and 165kg dry? Round about that anyways. Not a bad bike for the time.

Wee bit available here http://www.rg500.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=R&Category_Code=NS400
You'd have to trawl the web to find the rest, but should be doable if you're patient :)

So who remembers Dave Martin racing one in NZ for a while before he did so well on the first CBR600?

Why 3 pipes?
Two strokes require, to make good power, separate pipes for each cylinder. Otherwise the pulses from each cylinder interfere and ruin the scavenging effect. It's effectively three engines joined together. The pipes are carefully shaped to allow the gases to expand as they leave the exhaust port, and a reflected negative pressure wave bounces back to the port, sucking gases out at the right time (if they're built right).
You can thank the canny Czechs for inventing it, and Suzuki for literally stealing an MZ bike during a GP by paying the rider to take a different turn on the track, sneaking out a gate and into a waiting van.

A few got campaigned for a season or so. Even after port clean up, and dropping the squish band in the combustion chamber, they still didn't have quite enough kick out of corners.
Personally, I would steer clear of them. As mentioned, parts, new and second hand would be near non exsistant. MHO.

I rode one when I had my RZ500.
Handled nicely but the V3 drone wasn't that nice to listen to after the musical V4.
Plus, didn't have the kick of the RZ even if it wasn't a handful (like the RZ !!).
Given a choice today, I would pick the RZ over the NS and RG.

And to think I was lusting after an NSR250...
A good NSR250 would leave a good NSR400 gulping fumes in its wake. In fact a good LC will embarrass an NSR400.

Not this one:
clicky here (http://www.rgv250.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=13357)
is on a UK RGV site, but is built by a Kiwi.
PS: the Hybrid section of this forum contains a rather nice David Attenborough (cheetah) 500cc 2 stroke special I'm rather partial to.
