I don't get this. Why is it that some motorcyclists think riding a motorcycle places an individual higher than anyone else. Newsflash - arseholes ride bikes too. (And I'm not refering to the cop in question, merely responding to the quote).
I almost agree but think that first and foremost he's a person

Like I said, I was refering to the quote "above all else he's a bikie". What part of my response don't you understand?
Oh I for one agree with the quote, after all, "above all else" us bikers are a special family. And when one gets binned we care. Well especially us that ride really special old Kwaka's not to sure about those Suzuki riders anymore.

Anyway, back on topic...anybody know anything of the circumstances??
Just had a thing on the news, the media rep said he was a constable, and they showed some footage of him being put in the ambulance, he appeared to be white, with a smallish rectangular tattoo on his upper left arm (mebbe 2inch by 1 inch).
Dunno if that helps anyone figure out if hes one of our resident plods?

You know what, I sincerely hope that this cop is OK.
Having said that, it seems to me that with threads like this there is a danger that we reach a point where outpourings of sympathy somehow turn into ghoulishness.

I have just got back from the fatal car crash at the Tuakau Bridge that the bike cop was on his way to when he came off. I know him quite well and have ridden with him when I was on the work bike. He is a great guy who would do anything for anyone...
While I was on the way to the car fatal, the news seemed pretty bleak... he was status 1 (not going anywhere fast). However, he has since been downgraded to status 2 (serious but should be ok) so hoping for the best.
Not sure what his injuries are though - I had to get another SCU member to go to his crash.
Looks like he hit a bit of gravel coming around a corner and all over before he could do anything about it.
And by the way ... the weather is S^%# down there!!

And there they go spending 15 mill on domestic violence ads to try save a handful of lives yearly while the toll skyrockets. God its like living in South America. The only permanent solution I can see may be a final bustrip on some crap road for all the pollies responsible.

Yup, it's the rider astride - not the size of his ride that counts....
Oh, thank goodness for that. For a minute there I felt strangely worthless compared to such large-penised men as Zeroindex, or perhaps Boss Hoss riders...
These threads do border on ghoulishness, but that's a topic for another thread and another time.
I hope the motorcyclist is back on that great white lump of Teutonic plastic as soon as possible. Never mind the fêted biker connection that some of us aren't sure exists, nobody really wants to see somebody killed or maimed through no fault of their own (gravel on a corner, not much fun). That's just humanity.
Waste of talent, too. Those police motorcyclists have got some seriously canny moves, they seem to throw those great behemoths around like my little 250.
Status 2 -- isn't that what our own Ginger Manx Maniac is recovering from?

Traveled 22 earler in the year and it does have some rather dodgy areas, when the average Jo complains to the council about bad road conditions nothing ever seems to happen about it... reckon this suituation would be any different? (not saying it was "just" bad rd conditions that caused the acco weather, rider etc).. cheers BC

Just a quick word of warning re: SH22 and surrounding feeder roads. There is a hell of a lot of gravel kicked up in places after the WRC cars went thru there on the weekend. They all cut the corners at speed as they travel between special stages. It was slippery even in our Subaru cars on some of the corners where there was a lot of gravel.
Thanks for the warning Speedie.
Whilst I hope the cop concerned gets back on his feet soon (a wish I would pass on to anyone that has an accident, biker or not, cop or not - it's called simple compassion, Katman. Try looking to word up.) perhaps this incident might serve a purpose and persuade the useless fuckers in ivory council towers to do something about the appalling state of the roads.

Oh shit how do I agree with that!
Its my pet hate since one of my mates went down on his Ducati doing nothing abnormal. Lost it, on one of those extra horrible tar patches, that come and go on you for miles, where the chip is all punched down under the surface. Its like bloody riding on ice in the wet! And its everywhere, all over the country.
I just wonder how many accidents would be prevented, bikes and cages (especially 4x4's) if the road conditions aren't changing from good chip to ice (no chip) every few k. The Napier-Taupo Hwy is a typical example. You have 3 choices there in the wet. The left hand glossy strip, the right hand one or the oil covered chip down the middle.
They say on the TV ads how 15k over, can kill, what about changing the mechanical grip of your vehicle from good to nothing every 10 mins!!
I know I'm gonna get a chorus of "drive to the conditions" but the roads are a crime for which no one is held accountable.
Come on now settle down boy!! " Takes a deep breath and goes back to work"
My pet hate! Rant over!

He is in ICU with bruising to his brain, liver and kidneys, a broken shoulder, broken ribs and a few other broken bones (can't remember which).
He is sedated and stable but by no means out of the woods just yet.

As of this morning, basically still the same. Still sedated to a large degree but responsive to medical staff ... I presume that means small things such as squeezing a finger or blinking eyes.

I have been giving some thought about the suggestion for a card (which is appreciated).
I was thinking if I go and get one, I could go to a well known spot like the BP at Drury (and / or somewhere else) on Saturday or Sunday and you can come and sign the card.
Thoughts please...
For those that can't sign the card, I'm happy to just print off the relevant posts in this thread and attach to the card.

BC - Sterling idea, post where and when, am just down the road, will drop down and sign it
Wankers - This is a post about a fallen rider, irrespective of job, a rider, a person with a common interest, have some freaking respect! What would it be like for your family, if something really bad was to happen to you, and as per normal the KB community got in, paid their respects, helped the family etc, as all too often they do. Yet the, "He/she was a great person - very sorry" thread was tainted with crap from some other peanut brained moron just because you do A or B job? Grow the fuk up!
The rider in question - Cop or no cop, rider or no rider, speed or no speed, get well soon pal, all the best for a speedy recovery!
All - Cops are only a problem when you fuk up or are doing something wrong. Don't want a problem, don't break the law. Want to break the law (and I do too), get busted, do the crime, pay the fine (or do time). It isn't the cop at fault, it is you
That's my rant, and I suppose simply by adding to it, I'm endorsing it, but be sure, this is not about me, it is about him, and the all too frequent lack of responsibility and respect

Hi, The cop in question is Nick who emigrated to NZ 4 years ago, I am one of many friends in England who are very worried about his condition, I spoke to his wife last night who says that he remains sedated & very poorly. Nick is foremost a biker who has been riding for many years before joining the british police force, he emigrated to NZ to become a bike cop leaving behind his beloved 1999 R1. Nick is a bear of a bloke who will do anything for anyone. we in Bournemouth England would like to thank everyone who has posted kind regards & we now wait in hope of better news especially for his wife, daughter & 2 sons aged 4 & less than 1. best regards to you all.

Hi mate. As much as we sometimes get p#$&#* off with NZ ourselves, we do actually live in a pretty cool country which includes medical staff who do give a damn about patients (despite being underfunded but that's a matter between me and Helen). All our thoughts are directed his way, and I'm sure the team in the hospital are doing everything they can.

Ride to the conditions, if they change reduce your speed!
Take my word for this. Sometimes they change that quick that you have no time to change speed apart from an uncontrolled descent in velocity. That generally is the part that causes the damage too. Many of us know this as we have either had an accident, or know others who have. Perhaps this is why there is the stupidity that entered into this thread and then was moved to PD? Too many people who know neither and have little experience with motorcycles? No idea, but just a thought and although I do not ride anymore, many KBers will have to do alot of riding to catch me up.:niceone:

So is Bykey Cop able to update us on how many sigs were collected and what printouts he was able to deliver? It's kind of empowering to know how much people do really care. It's hard to get that image of the bike's ripped out rear wheel, drive shaft and swing arm and not feel some pain for Nick.
My best mate left a bunch of skin on the road from a Yamaha XS2 cop bike slide down SH1 ... as he describes it 254ft 7inches of it.

I have placed a get well card at the Rotorua Police station watch house. If you wish to sign the card then please make your way in. Go to the front counter and you will see the card hanging from the wall behind the counter.
I have e-mailed all the station staff so they should know what it is all about. Just tell them why you are there and all should run smoothly. I will be on leave so wont be there.
I will leave the card there for 1 week and will forward it on to Nick next week.

What other developments?
Went to see Nick today. He is conscious although pretty much drugged up on morphine. He still has a tracheotemy and tube down his throat to assist breathing.
The developments Donor is talking about is the chest infection he has picked up while in ICU so on top of all his injuries he has that to fight off as well.
I would like to say he is out of the woods but it is not the case just yet - he is still very sick. However, when I read out some of the messages in the card and he saw a picture of his mates in the UK that I had put in the card, a tear came out of the corner of his eye. From that response and a few responses to blink on request from the nurses for different things, I am hopeful that his brain has survived any major damage.
The printout of this thread was also slipped inside the card so thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. It will be a long road.

Shit that don't sound to good. I hope he has lots of luck with the healing process and a speedy recovery.
It just makes me think how lucky I am. The bike looks bad, but not really bad enough for his level of injury. He must have hit some hard things with his body as well.
Which again makes me feel fuckin lucky!!!!!
Pics of my bike before they took it away attached. I still have a neck that gives me a bit of shit (whiplash) they found my helmet 30m away from the accident still done up. And yes it did fit and wasn't a cheapy. And a tendon in my shoulder that gives me a bit of grief as well. All the shit they thought would give me a hard time has healed up good, busted ribs, punchured lung, concussion etc.
I'm back on the MX bike and the Z1R and largly escaped unharmed. The only problem is convincing the wife I need another sport bike.
Just tell him to keep his chin up and rest up for better times. I thought I was over mine in a month but looking back, the concussion did take a while to sort itself out. It happened late last year. But the body heals and the mind forgets. He will be fine I'm sure! I've attached pics etc so he can see I 'm not fulla shit and if he gives it time he will be able to beat this set back.
Jeepers I bet his loved ones are bloody worried, all in the line of duty as well.

Hello all
I am Nick's sister and have been in NZ from the UK since straight after the accident - joined by our parents a few days later - I heard about this website and wanted to say thank you to you all for such lovely messages - it means such a lot to us all that there are so many people out there that care - and Nick is most definately aware of you all!
Nick is, as you know, still very poorly and still in ICU, but there is hope that he will soon be moving to a High Dependancy ward
It will be a long long road for him - but with the support he has - not only Lisa, who is amazinlgy strong, but all those close to him and some fab friends (have met some of the other officers and they are really lovely!) he will get there
His is able to communicate as Biker Cop has described - and is often aware of what's going on around him
So, a huge thank you again to you all! You are very much appreciated!

Quick update for all those that want to know...
Nick has had his tracheotomy tube removed today and has been able to speak for the first time - which to me (and the rest of us) seems like a miracle! He is not out of the woods yet - but his temperature has come down quite a bit, so seems to be winning the pneumonia battle and he has some more movement in his right leg now (left seems relateively ok) MRI scan due this week
It's looking more positive - so fingers crossed
He said that he thinks that he might be in hospital for about another week (bless him!) and has seen his children which is a real boost for him
thanks again to all those who have posted the messages of good will - and thanks to those that have replied to me welcoming me to NZ - I will be back in November time too - to spend some more time with Nick - he has promised me a tour of the place - but perhaps not on the back of a bike!?!?

Get well soon, from the OZ chapter of KB.

Ha ha can't keep a good man down! Hope he manages to keep some of that optimism during this whole life-changing experience.
Thanks for the update, Kerry. Yay for him being able to talk again! Dunno what I'd do if I had to stop talking!
As Nick continues on his road to recovery, there will still be plenty of people here who are keen to help. These are genuine offers, so please don't be shy about asking when you, your folks, Lisa or Nick need some cheering up.
I'm sure we'll come into our own when he's a bit better - that's when he's likely to feel really frustrated about the time he's taking to heal... and hospitals can be very boring places! Then I'm sure we can make his life a little more interesting. :devil2: The staff will soon get used to the squeak of leather and the clumping of bike boots down those corridors!

Hello Kerry
I live in Christchurch, capital of New Zealand;), and I am going to pass on your message to a mate of mine Geoff Bowers who is also a friend of Nic's. They were in the same cross over wing at the Royal New Zealand Police College. Geoff is aware that he has had a crash and I am keeping him up to date. I will also send Nic a card.

Hello all
I am Nick's sister and have been in NZ from the UK since straight after the accident - joined by our parents a few days later - I heard about this website and wanted to say thank you to you all for such lovely messages - it means such a lot to us all that there are so many people out there that care - and Nick is most definately aware of you all!

Hi everyone
As promised, an update on Nick...
He is out of ICU (horray!) and is in a High Dependancy Ward
He is talking - and he and I have had some great short chats - and despite still getting very confused at times and experiencing difficulty remembering the words he wants, especially when he is tired, he is getting to be more "with it" as time goes by
He is frustrated that he can't go home and keeps telling us all that he'll be out by the weekend!
Physically, he is seeing Physios daily and has even briefly stood up today! They are still very concerned about his right hand side, they are still not sure what range of movement he will regain
He is eating a little (despite telling me that he isn't!)
So, all in all, he has made some incredible progress - a testament to the strength of character he has and the motivation that he has to get better (largely due to his lovely wife and children I am sure!) and to the great medical staff at Middlemore Hospital
It seems a bloomin' miracle to me that I can tell you this given where he was 10 + days ago!
Watch this space... I'll let you know when he's dancing around the ward!!!

Good timing Kerry, as I was riding to work today thinking that we hadn't heard and I would ask BikeyCop for an update .... here you are gone and done it.
It struck me from your comments how little we really knew about Nick's condition. Yes we were grieving for his pain and suffering but perhaps we weren't fully aware that you and the rest of the family may have lost him.
Words are inadequate, so I'll stop.

it has been probably the worst experience and the most shocking of our lives - I wouldn't wish it on anybody...
you are right, we almost lost him - and that just doesn't bear thinking about
he has such a long way to go, with no guarantees... his brain and body have suffered such a lot - but we see increasing amounts of his personality and humour coming through - it's still our Nick, thank god
It has hit me just how well thought of he is - both by people that know him and even those that don't - that is something special!
the people on this site have restored my faith in human nature! they are very special!

Hi Guys and Gals,
Earlier today I went to see Nick in hospital.
He has made a remarkable comeback given how only a month ago he was on death's door.
He is now up walking (with a crutch) around the ward for short periods and is likely to be discharged next week for a stint at a rehabilitation unit in Pt Chevalier before going home to recuperate.
He is hoping to be back at work some time early next year, even if it is just light duties for a while. He is chatting and laughing and has maintained his sense of humour. He has minor memory problems with some things but that is nothing compared to how far he has come.
I'm sure we will see him back on the road soon (although probably not on a bike).

Hi all
I am sure that Nick would welcome seeing any of you be it at the hospital or when he reaches the Rehab Centre - as I said before he knows about you all and is a bit gob smacked by all the support
As BikeyCop has indicated, he is a bit of a walking miracle - and gets stronger each day
I am back in the UK unfortunately, but I speak to Nick twice a day for an hour or so (god help my phone bill!) and for the vast majority of the time is totally with me and is memory is improving in leaps and bounds - his eldest keeps testing him!
I can at last see a time when he can log on to this site for himself and post his own message to you all!
I will be coming back to NZ soon - exactly when depends on Nick and what he wants, he has promised me a BBQ in his garden!
in the meantime, all the very best to you all

Hi everyone
well... I am absolutely delighted to report that the hospital have sent Nick home to recover in his own environment!!! He will have lots of support and rehab etc (they are still monitoring everything, especially his head) but feel that he will be a lot happier with Lisa and the children around him... so his wish and all out prayers have been granted!!!!
He has a long way to go - but he's on the road!!! Amazing!
I spoke to him last night (UK time), this morning (NZ time) and he was praying that they would let him go - and he told me that someone from KiwiBiker had been in to see him (Donor, you, I expect) and that he was really pleased to see you! When he is able I know he will take a look at all these messages and no doubt share some of the jokes that are coming through now (thankfully we can do that now!)
And you're right Klingon...not a chance that we'll let him on a bike again - think he'll be wrapped in cotton wool for a good while yet!
I wrote to the All Blacks to see if they could do anything for him (Nick is a BIG fan!) and they sent him a signed framed photo and get well card - bloody amazing!!! Nick is chuffed! So... despite them being out of the World Cup, these amazing Kiwis have shone again!!! Thanks a million!
Spoke to Lisa just now and he is in his own bed snoring his head off...fantastic!
I have been asked by a few of you where to send cards etc - I would say Pukekhoe Police Station - one of the fab guys there will drop things round to Nick - he's just a couple of mins away from there now
all the best

I am the Cop that crashed his bike on route to a Fatal crash (nearly became one myself). Thank you all for your concerns, it is great to know that bikers do stick together no matter what job they do. I am out of Middlemore and back home now. Lets see if i can tell you what happened, well to be honest i dont remember, the crash has wiped out three and a half weeks including being in the coma. I was pretty bashed up, i got 6 broken ribs, fractured right arm, broken right shoulder front and back, fractured left hand, numerous fractures to my spine, smashed front teeth and a bruised brain. All i can say is that thank god for my Police issue BMW helmet. It was destroyed but i am here to tell the story. It definately pays to have good gear as you only have one body and what price do you place on that!
I was very lucky to have these injuries, it could have been a lot worse as they gave me 30% chance of surviving at one point. The Ambos had to work on me on route. I am walking and now getting into the gym to regain some of the strength in my legs and shoulders.
I have a lot of people to thank, firstly Lindsay the Ambo who worked on me, all the staff in ICU at Middlemore they made my family and friends so welcome and always had time to explain what was happening with me, to all the staff on the ward (they had to endure my week of Tourettes syndrome, sorry), all the Kiwibiker subscribers for their thoughts and especially the card i received (that was really special to me), to all my work colleagues and friends (especially Adam and Wayne) and most importantly to my family.
I am on the road to recovery but it will take time, the brain injury is the hardest. I took a pretty hard hit to my head and am lucky i dont have serious head injuries.
Again thank you for your concern I can never thank you enough. i have been overwhelmed at the concern for me it means so much to me, thank you. And Donor i think it was you who came and saw me thanks for taking the time out to visit me, it meant a great deal to me. And unfortunately i wont be getting back on the horse, the wife has put her foot down as it nearly cost me my life. Plus i wouldnt want to put my family through that again. Anyone want to buy a BMW 1150GS?? Will always be into bikes and maybe i may get one again! Take care everyone and ride carefully.

Fantastic to hear you are walking again and can obviously communicate pretty well too. hmmm... a bout of Tourettes could definitely come in handy at times. Very convenient about the expected relapses. :devil2:
You are definitely lucky to be regaining so much ability, and you really must be a fighter like your Sis told us!
By the way, did they let you keep your helmet as a souvenir?

Nick, that you're back on your feed and well along the way to recovery is fantastic news. I can't begin to imagine what your family and close friends went through, and they must all be overjoyed with your progress to date.
I hope you continue to mend quickly and painlessly, and that day when your wife finally relents and lets you out on a bike again will be closer than you know.

Ooh! Quick thought...
A nice compromise would be getting your wife to buy you one of those "Carver" cars! Three wheels and they lean into the corners...
(ok, so it's NZ 90k... BUT it's either that or back on a bike - right?? ;))

The thoughts that goes through my head are always random, and sometimes confusing for even me.
Nonetheless I can't help but think of the Fatal car crash that you were heading to before your incident. Especially the mental thoughts that must be running through you head in preperation for such a scene. Then also to concentrate on riding your machine through what sounds like a pretty shit piece of road. Its a lot to deal with, and something I certainly have never had to worry about in all my years of riding.
All the best in a fast a speedy recovery Nick, and to everyone thats taken time out to support the family and help. You're all a bunch of bloody legends..

Nick, great to see you post here. All the best as you work through the challenges ahead.
You do a great job out there - often thankless, regularly criticised. Keep up the good work - you boys and girls in blue are really appreciated.

Very nice to hear in person from whoever we've been concerned about. Glad that you are well on the way to a full recovery. Bet you are pleased there was no cheesecutter where you came off!!

yeah i at least i have that to be thankful for, no wire to hit. Its a disgrace that the highway has this stuff, they could at least put some covers over them to stop them being like cheesecutter wires.
I am thankful for a lot of things but one in particuler was the great kit i was wearing, really saved me!

I will try to get a pic from the crash unit to send out. But honestly it saved me! the helmet was a series 5 flip helmet, a bit pricey but how much can you place on your head or your life in my instance. Always pays to have good kit thats what saved me from worse injuries. :2thumbsup
