I put some cheap crash bungs on my bike that I got from ebay. Had a lowspeed lowside the other day but thats another (funny) story. Anyway the left crashbung snapped right off providing no protection at all. It was the M10 bolt that snapped so I very much doubt that it was actually a grade 8.8 bolt which it claimed to be. The plastic slider also broke. Fortunately damage was pretty minor most annoying bit will be getting the rest of the bolt out of the engine mount. I emailed the ebay seller hoping (but not expecting) to get some money back or at least a replacment slider and was quite taken back by the response. They denied ever selling it and said shouldn't waste their time. Great customer service isn't it.

If you must buy cheap crashbungs make sure you throw the bolts away and buy quality ones from your local engineer supplies shop.

Don't buy anything from 'supplyndemand' on ebay

I have home made bungs and last year at Manfeild i crashed and the 10 mm H/T bolt broke clean off at the end of the thread as its meant to do ( the weakest link in a bolt) Any size bolt will break if its hard enough and hit at the rite angle etc but a soft bolt will bend before it shears and will normally do less damage than a H/T one.

And don't get ones that stick to far out. I crashed a ZX10R and as soon as it slid off the track and hit the grass, the long crash knob just dug in and flipped the bike.....many, many times :weep:

I got some on my GSXR750 from http://www.solomotoparts.com/catalog/ (Thanks Jimbo600) and they were great. Saved me lots of money when the bike got blown over. Only a couple of scratches on the bike, and the bungs, bolts and the no-cut frame lived to fight another day.

I thought long and hard about bungs... did I want to chop holes in my fairing?

In the end I decided no... if I were to drop it in a car park or whatever, I'd still need some paint done... and due to the nature of the paint job, it'd be a full respray regardless. Drop at medium speed... gonna need paint, and other bits will get munched anyway. Drop at high speed, I'm probably shagged. Plus they can potentially make things bend that wouldn't have, probably just as likely as preventing anything. In the end I was left with chopping holes in fairings just on the off chance that they might save me having to call a tow truck to get home.

Stupid bikes are so damn delicate... even just falling over and you scuff the hell out of them. (but that's one of the reasons I like them :D)

The ones I got from solomotoparts were 'shogun' brand and came with little very solid frames, they worked for me. And after the bike got blown over, they probably saved me some money and hassle.

There were/are no other options

My bike toppled over recently, just off the side stand onto the opposite side. Damage done was limited to a light scuff mark on the bung, no marks anywhere else. I'm convinced of their benefits.

The crash bungs on my SRAD completely absorbed the damage from my recent lowish-speed highside. The bolt bent about 30°, and a goodly chunk of the nylon was ground away.

I'd never want to ride without good crash knobs with plenty of clearance.

If one was considering installing bungs, it'd be worth lying the bike down carefully (or using a sheet of MDF, etc) to check how much grindable knob meat would provide a good amount of material to wear away before the muffler, fairings, bar ends and levers touched tarmac.

Heh. Heh. I said 'grindable knob meat'. Heh.

I'd say quite good actually, considering the speed and height involved in the accident. I believe the tank, frame and fairing would've taken more damage if I didn't have them. I'm not saying that they are the answer for protection but had it not been for them the other day I would've been repairing a lot of plastics. Instead the only damage was to my pride.

Interesting... big bungs and still frame damage?

Not frame damage mate, which you are quite aware of, but rather a couple of scratches where the frame slid over the curbing on the side of the track.

My road NC30 came with a set which I was going to put on the track NC30, because I am a fan of crash bungs (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=949693&postcount=13)

I havent put them on yet because I dont like where they bolt up. they use a "spare" bolt hole on the front head, not the frame and these particular ones just bolt up to that. so the impact force goes straight to the head, breaks the lug off, and voila, oil and coolant potentially everywhere.

I intend to make up a mount back to an engine mount on both sides like the R & G ones do. havent gotten round to it yet so theyre still on my bench.

Meh, its a track only bike not a beauty queen.. a few scratches wont hurt it.

Uncle_B (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=1381)'s SV1000 was an 'R' as well, if you know what I mean.

No, sorry, I don't know what you mean.He made enough mods to it that it warranted an 'R' label (In your mind, not on the side of the bike) It was a sweet bike. I think he listed it on tardme as a SV1000R.
