View Full Version : Trailer predicament

Now I have 4 kids all with dirt bikes and the wife has decied to have a go dirt biking as well as she is fed up of waiting in the car :whistle:
So as you can guess I don't want to stop her as I'm on a roll. This all means I have to get a trailer to take six bikes!!!:gob: Plus all the gear. :gob::gob:
It gets harder in that I ain't got a lot of room in the garage. So it needs to be able to fit in with the bikes on board. So it will probably need a hinged A frame at the front as I only got ~5.5 m by ~3m of available space. As it has to fit around all the other gear/crap that tends to hoard in the garage. It will need to be tandem wheel and braked and able to be used for more than just carrying bikes. It needs a solid bed and some sort of sides at least 400mm high with plenty of holding down points for the straps.
Anybody out there got some good trailer designer/manufacturer who can come up with a flash design.

i bulit my own trailer (score basic frame of trade me) was a car transporter cut about a foot off it (had some rust) i have made it so it will take 4 bike facinig forward and i guess i could add a couple more facing the rear if needed. As for the sides i have made so they slot in (removable) as to fit bike you will require the width 2.5m is the max for wof standards guard included 400 mm side will cost you room width due to foot peg pushin bikes inwards i also have large stoage box on the front for gear and fuel cans on the lid of box air tank (save havin foot pump) and marque also store in box twin axle tows real well. it is also sprung so it sit low easy for off loading only need ramp to load (only use it for loading cuase its easyer but can load up without ramp) ill get a pic for you.

Ya thought of getting a Van or Ute? Best thing I've ever done was replace my work Ute for a Toyota Hilux long wheel base Van. Dam easy ta load with the ramp I made. I can ride my (235Kg dry) CBR1000FL right in to it. Would get 2-3 full size dirt bikes in it and still be able to tow a trailer.

I've got the same problem (basicly).
I've got a hiace high roof which fits my lads bikes but no room for any more.also being honest its not a safe way to cart the boys around being as its got no seatbelts in the back.
What I have seen is Hiace high roof jumbo vans with a row of seats in the back and a solid cage behind them.
It fits 4 kids bikes so you'd only need a small trailer

i can confirm that a Long wheelbase standard roof hiace can fit 2x cr250's, and i knw a guy who has a short wheelbase who fits 2 250x and a 150 in, but stuff is rubbing.back to the topic, to haul 6 people and 6 bikes, id suggest a double cab ute with bench seats. & a trailer
btw, i want your budget, i can barely afford to maintain 1 bike!

I already got the tow vehicle with 8 seats - landcruiser. So don't want to get another vehicle. Although I had thought about a 4wd long wheelbase hiace.
I presently use a 4.0mlg 1.8m wide tandem trailer from hirepool or hirequip. (get it cheap for the weekend as i'm in the trade) But that is getting a real pain in the arse having to fetch it late on Friday or Saturday and then take it back early Monday. just after a good design on a trailer. I seen one the other day at woodhill at the WMCC event carrying 6 bikes but it was driving away so couldn't get close enough to analyse.
Booom - thats why I do all the maintenance myself and got the air cooled 4 strokes ( for the kids) except the boy who's just discovered 2 stroke power - loves his powerband :headbang: but has managed to blow it up after two rides!!!. :shit:I'm thinking about changing them so they all got one type of bike. would make life easier me thinks.

I did see someone at the old Waterford park track with a huge ali trailer that could hold around 6 full size bikes. They got it custom made.
Anyway I have seen some cool fold up trailers on the net. They fold just behind the wheel and have castors so you can move them around. You might want to look at being able to jut throw it up on its side against the house or something?

Your problem is seating the people and gear as well. So the land cruiser is good for that. Probably the best way to go in my view. You just need to solve the trailer thing. I have a dual wheel with 3 x wheel racks on the front it would be easy to make one for the rear. With 2 x bikes facing backwards in between the three forward but that would still only make 5 bikes. If they are little there might be a way to get 4 across front or rear by staggering the bars and puting them closer together. Other wise it's take two cars.
Bloody hell you shoulda bought that TV sooner or leave the wife at home. Then a double cab with 5 in the cab, two bikes on it and 3 on the trailer would have coped. Does the whole crew go every time?

Sorry to jump in on this thread but just a quick trailer question.
The flat connector came off my trailer, and a don't know what colour wire goes where. Does anyone know for a 5 core, left to right.

thats cool, but wouldnt it be too wide?
notch

Preferably the tie downs should be fixed forward of the wheel stop, making the design even wider. The LTSA has some max width spec's on thier website, maybie it would fit, but making longer trailers is easier probably...

i disagree.
the best place for the tie point is halfway between the handlebars and the axle. this pulls the bike foward while also holding the rear of the bike down. stopping the back end of the bike bouncing or needing to be tied down

thats cool, but wouldnt it be too wide?Ya could put them diagonally, say 45deg, which would decrease the width of the trailer. Horse Trucks do that with the horses (which could be the way to go too).

A bit off topic but that's an interesting point Booom made. I have always tied my bikes from the top of the triple clamp. I know a lot of people jus tie them down from the handle bars/barkbusters. I have always thought that makes the bike more stable on the trailer. however I find I still have to tie the back wheel to stop it moving around. I suppose I will have to incorportae a block/channel on the rear wheel in this trailer design then it wouldn't move and clash with other bikes.

sorry, youve mis-enterpereted what ive said,
tie the top end to the handle bars, and tie the bottom end (the trailer end) to a point which is halfway (lenghtwise on the trailer) between the axle and the bars
i drew a picture, its here

do you use tiedowns on the rear of the bike aswell? or do a couple of tiedowns attatched to the handlebars provide adequate support. cheers

just the front as per the picture, because the tie point is behind the axle, your actually pulling weight onto the rear of the bike. try it, it works mint, ive had my trailer like this for the last 12 years and never had a problem
