For me it was 1974 107 mph on a Mack III Kawasaki on the main Sth road just before you come into Rollestion. Friggin thing could go and you couldn't see because of the blue exhaust fumes everywhere. I remember having a drag race up St Asaph street with a well known hot rod of the day called Moonshine. I won the day but the dude driving the car was the winner cause he had a beautiful piece on eye candy in the passenger seat.

For me it was December 1973 on a Suzuki GT250R (slightly modified). 103 mph indicated, but knowing how inaccurate the speedos were back then, it was probably only in the mid 90s. The same day I rode a Honda CB500 at an indicated 110 mph, so I can probably claim that as a genuine ton.

Had been riding a VTR250 for a year - couldn't get the bastard over 155kph. Went to a track day at Pukekohe and a good mate forced me to take his 636 track bike (said it needed a run) told everyone I wouldn't be going over 180kph they all said "Tui" got the bike up to about 240kph on the back straight and over 230 on the start/finish straight.

It's windy at that speed....really windy.

Whiiiiizzzzz down the Bruce Highway in Brisbane for about 2 minutes!

Main thought - how the hell do people get around corners at that speed.

1973 S2A Kawasaki. Yeah I know I never owned a Kawasaki, but a mate had one, he rings up saying he was having problems in the middle of servicing it, now it wouldn't start. So I go over there and check it over. Somehow (they probably don't make parts like this any more) he had managed to fit the aircleaner element back to front totally blocking the intake to the carbs. Turn it round, kick the bike into life and take it for a rap to clear it out and once the smoke cleared a bit it was off running like a charm so I just had to open it up properly. (Oh on closed roads under controlled condiitons of course).

gsxr 250rr about 5 years ago. First time I'd ever ridden a bike. Rode for about 10minutes to figure out how to change gear then took it out to see how fast it would go. I had a dirt bike helmet with no visor so seeing wasn't that easy either. Not a very good idea but it got me hooked and I ended up buying that bike.

1971 on a '69 BSA Lightning. No helmet, glasses or goggles,no gloves, cotton work shirt with the sleeves rolled up and sneakers. You couldn't buy Levi's in those days so had on some Wranglers....so at least my legs were safe.At that speed my eyes started to water,so took my left hand off the bars to wipe my eyes - and my arm was ripped off the bars and was flapping behind my back! Hadn't realised the strength of the wind at that speed.Got into a slight speed wobble but it was no problem.

I've ridden a lot of bikes over the eons, but never been interested in outright speed - you could count the times I've been over the ton on my digits without removing my socks.Going too fast around a corner is more exciting than doing some specified speed on a safe straight piece of road.

'Bout '75 on the old '73 T500 Suzuki! Was my second bike after the B31 BSA which would achieve 72mph with me laying flat on the tank!

The T500 was a revelation! 5th was an overdrive and it would do 105mph in 5th or 112mph in 4th, indicated. First time I accelerated hard I had difficulty getting my feet back up on the pegs! It was as fast as a Ferrari over the quarter at the time and not far behind the Kwaka 750 tripple!

For the young ones, 100mph, the old 'ton' is 160km/h.

Not long after I purchased my 750cc Norton Atlas in the mid 70’s. I may well have exceeded 100mph on various other machines but they usually didn’t have anything approaching a functional speedometer. I remember swapping it with a mate who had a 72/73 T120V and he came back with his eyes bugging out. He had mis counted the gears (it only had 4 fer gawds sake) and thought he had tapped it out in top at 105mph on the clock and found he was in 3rd (gaH! My poor bike)

I kinda realized then that the Norton (that was always sold as a touring bike – the 650SS was the sports machine) had some serious speed potential. That day I definitely exceeded 100mph and later, after spending a house deposit on the engine and gearing up, clip ons, rear sets, half the weight removed, small fairing (fell to bits) it managed 129mph (timed) which impressed the heck out of me at the time…

The engine imploded a month later….

I saved the cases etc and rebuilt it std with low compression pistons but the nice head / carb set up and it was still a bloody quick bike once it was wound up. It could not live with the big two strokes on acceleration but once you hit 75mph it was a different story. The Norton kept going and would reel em in. I rode it for around 100,000 miles around NZ over 5 years and it had 190,000 miles on the papers when I sold it… I miss that bike – it was a nice piece of kit.

Suzuki T20 X6 1965. (first 6 speed box) Some, that are still alive would remember the Jap beginnings when 250's were the biggest you could buy. You were usually up against Triumph Bonnevilles and Saints belonging to the "25 Club" and the like which struggled to the "Ton " anyway. Gaz.

Even though (yes - even though!) I've been riding since 1974 or summat, I didn't actually own a bike capable of such stratospheric velocities until 1994. I got close (but no cigar) as a pillion: 95 (indicated) in 1974 on a Suzuki T500, and about the same on a Z1 in 1977. Both, incidentally, were in a 30mph zone, on the same road.
I finally cracked the ton in about 1996 on a VF500, about 12 years after doing it in a Fiat 132 going down the west side of the Kaimais.

Otherwise might've been my current GSX on the Coro loop. Overtaking a Fonterra doube-truck thought I saw 205 on the dial. But then I realised I had misread it and it was 100.00kph.

The T500 was one of the most popular bikes in its day and deservedly so! I was going to do the usual "drop the counter-shaft sprocket a tooth" mod which would have brought 5th into play and apparently raised the top speed to around 115mph, but had to sell the bike to get married so never did find out the truth of that mod.

Sold it in '77. Still got the Missus, though, and a new Suzuki which funnily enough seems to have similar performance to the old 500...

BEAT THE LOT OF YOU.

I went over !00mph in the late 1950's on a 1000cc Vincent Rapide.

I did this on the first, just completed, section of the Auckland motorway at Panmure.

The Vincent was the fastest thing on two or four wheels at that time. The magnificent speedo whent up to 120.

I seem to remember that if your Vincent would not do 100 you could return it for one that would.

Most contempory production bikes that you could buy did little more than 80 mph (130Ks) My 1950 AJS would shake a bit over 75 so I cruised at 70 (115k) No radar or helmets then.

I did this on the first, just completed, section of the Auckland motorway at Panmure.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the thread is going to sh1t itself!

you said the jinxed word!

Yeah, got a Puscort Sport after it, then a CBR 400, as I worked out how boring cars were... Something bad happened to that one though.
Then I got an RG myself.... and a collection of engine parts to fill the mantle piece after a year of owning it....
So got another CBR 400.... Those were the days when i could fit on a little bike ;-)

2nd day I owned the 996 on the miranda flats. won't say the actual speed because of my reallife occuaption invloving bikevids of late:Police: lets just say ***if the speed needle goes past the 12 o'clock position 200kph is history and the bike isn't even getting started, it's handling completely normally and smoove and the speed doesn't even feel that fast...it's only the needle that reminds you whats going on. that's scary. actually...not as scary as trying to get to the top peed of 160kph on the srv250. that involved contortionist squeeze-balling into the space behind the 6"headlight, the suspension malching around and trying to time the run so it's down-hill ;)

Some of these claims are funny, maybe it's a case of memory playing tricks. It has brought back memories. A few things though, RD250s(air cooled) would only do 160k off a cliff, H2s didn't have any trouble keeping the front wheel on the ground at speed, the problem was keeping it pointed where you wanted to go. And a mate had one of those Kawasaki 350 triples and it'd pull 1000 into the red in top but still wasn't as fast as the best RD350B and talk about use petrol. It used way more than any of our cars.

All such good fun and despite later learning that "speed kills" we are all still here after spending all our youth on fast bikes trying to make them go as fast as they possibly could.

About 20 yrs ago,2 up on a gsxr750 going to castrol 6 hour, mate had just bought it,had been run in.Left Hawera at 10.40 and was in over bridge in Wanganui at 11.20,scraped pegs going through goat valley too,met up with a guy on a bmw and couldn't keep up.Cruised into Fielding from Sanson as a few cops about and a good group of bikes in convoy, sitting down at manfield at high noon for the start.

Sadly can't recall by myself alone though.Does 160km in my dato 1200sss,120y sss, celica and accord count, sure does in my v8 fairmont on lpg though lol.

Due largely to the lower volumes of traffic and the fact speed in itself doesn't kill...

If you timmed the lights right you could on a 72 Norton Commando start off at the lights at the Old Railway station on Moorhouse Ave and get all the way back to the Barrack's in Poulsen Street in Addington, before the cops, but only if you did the ton. But you had to do it two up to obtain verification. That was before internet and bikecams. You needed a witness in the bar to state the facts. Wells thats wat I've been told anyway.

Early last year, 1988 GSXR250, easy 160, had plenty of pulling power to reel in my mates GSX250 fully tapped. then a big CBR flewpast at 100km+faster.
That showed me got a faster bike!
It was also on stopping (no more airflow) that the head gasket s minor weep became a gush with a timid limp home over the hill

Then an rg150, scariest bike ever, can't inagine a bigbore 2smoke!:eek5:

I took my 2003 GSX250 to the sprints at carterton.
I had already seen an indicated 160 (Im sure they calibrated the speedo so it says 160 because its some kinda benchmark)

First time I went I managed 158.55kph @ indicated 165ish
next time I geared higher 1 tooth on front: 160.93kph
Then with homemade drainpipe exhaust: 161.83kph

best standing 1/4 was 15.75 seconds.

Give it a go legaly its lots of fun and ya dont need to be gunning for 300+ to have fun!

1972, on the long straight leaving Shannon on the way to Palmerston North, on a borrowed CB750 (the Honda owner had my Kawasaki F9 to go dirt riding that weekend) In those days you'd be lucky to see another vehicle between Levin and Massey uni, and the back way was "a lot" quicker than going via the main road.

First time was on the back of a workmates GT 550 all worked up with bassini chambers and shit along the road to Wgtn airport with no gloves or anything and a badly fitting half faced helmet. I dont think i went with him again after that.
With me riding it was on my hot rodded CB400/4 along the Hutt Road at night.
I was watching the speedo so carefully i didnt see the cop till i went passed him and i didnt think it was a good idea to stop so i just carried on. I chased a mate on a CB750 on day and saw an indicated 180on my speedo and the bloody thing wobbled and bounced for ever after that day.

Its amazing how we all stayed alive doing speeds like we all did on " H " rated tyres and shitty brakes. But at least the fuel was great in those days and cars had carless days to cope with and we could ride every day just because we could.
