View Full Version : Fastest speed? - What bike?

What's the fastest speed people have gone, indicated or calculated, and on what bike?

The speedo on my GS only goes to 180, but I've had the bike to just over 8500rpm in top, which means 8.5 x 30km/h =~255km/h.

not willing to say where it was

hopefully on a closed road :)
I've seen 280 indicated on a long straight somewhere, with 250+ on taupo's main straight.
Most mags reckon it'll do almost 300 flat out, (limited to 186mph).

according to my speeding ticket last year 121 km... (and won't admit at anything else... on the open road... :oi-grr: ) on the track on the other hand I was clocked at 250 down the back straight... and doing or averageing 150 on a closed road hill climb :D

There is a straight bit not far from here that starts with a nice down hill bit into a longish flat bit then into an uphill. On this ideal piece of road with its little runup ramp, I could crank my Busa up to 290 in 5th gear and then pass the 300 indicated index mark once shifting into sixth. Had it a fair way past the 300 index on a quite few occasions. In fact too many occasions because thats what Hayabusas were made for. I ride a slower bike now that can actually corner.

Coming back from Akaroa back in 1993, I saw (indicated) just over 250km/h on my RZ500, as my mate with an RG500 slowly passed me with another 10km/h extra.

1000cc and 8 cylinders of two strokes at max revs and speed. Nothing better !!!!!!!!!!

(Of course the roads were closed off for this, as it would be illegal to do that normally...........)

Seen 288km/h on the thou, still wanted to pull but but the wind at that speed was wanting to pull me off the bike.

Oh and as there is no time stamp or location, it was done on a public road. Just I have the balls to say it.

Must've been about 96 for me... coming back from Akaroa at a similar sort of speed on an RZ500, had a good mate on the back... hit a bump, we both left the seat... most fun we've ever had, still laugh about it today :2thumbsup

Great stuff !! :)

The '500 wasn't particularily stable at that speed as it would enter a tank-slapper if you didn't have a good grip on it.
That early technology with a fat 16" front wheel had a lot to blame.
On saying that, the RZ500 was very rewarding to ride....and that V4 two-stroke noise ....

For those unfamiliar with the term, that's the average speed attained running from anyone threatening to "wax your bits" against the will of the hair donor.

At sea level with no wind it's approximately 412.7kph

The D6 that CAT makes is very similar in many ways to the ZZR-D6. It's large and heavy, but purposeful with plenty of pulling power and does what it was designed to do very well indeed. :angry2:

Good comments on the speedo indicated readings.

Mine was without a speedometer, but measured anyway: 311kph, 1977 TZ750 "Monoca", front straight Phillip Island, 2004. As anyone who knows that bike will confirm, it was a bastard in corners, but hell on wheels in a straight line.

If ya wana know ya top speed with proper timing and a certificate then roll on up (or down) to carterton for the sprints.

Here is the blurb from their website: ( www.cliffhanger.org.nz )

So...any idea how fast your bike will go in a straight line?
Heres the chance to find out!
On 30 September 2007 and 25 November 2007 we will be running a standing and flying 1/4mile sprint. Its just you against a very accurate clock.

The flying run will have a very long run-up ensuring that even the fastest bikes will have ample opportunity to reach their top speed before crossing the first timing light. If you want to experiment with gearing, exhaust sytems, jetting or aero-dynamics then this is the place.

Motorcycles upto and including 600cc - $30 + $20*
Motorcycles over 600cc - $37 + $20*

* The $20 fee is to cover the costs of the MNZ day licence - should the rider be able to produce a valid MNZ race licence on the day, the $20 fee will be waived.

Sausage Sizzle, refreshments available. Clean toilet facilities on-site. Spectators are encouraged to come along.

Gripe about the cost if you must but it's shitloads cheaper than the fine for 300kph

If you have a look at the site you might find some of the previous results interesting too, some bikes really have massive speedo exaggeration and others don't.

My best is on there at 161.85kph on my GSX250 - It was indicating 172 at the time!

One things for sure I was braking way before the 100m mark, about 100m before it actually. Bike was smooth as silk and still accelerating hard enough to have the front a bit light.

oLD ZXR250C WITH SOME MODS ON IT GOT 190KMH WITH SPEEDO CLOCKED AND ANOTHER 2K RISEN ON THE DIAL WITH + 2KRPM TO REDLINE IN 6TH (PUTS ME SMACK IN PEAK POWER) A ROUGH 200KMH INDICATED OR REAL 192 FROM PREVIOUS DYNO CALCULATIONS.
HAD A MAGIC SPEEDO BOX, NICE TAILWIND, SOME SHINY NEW LEATHERS, NO MIRRORS, A NUTTY RIDER AND SOME LOVING INSIDE HER TO DO THAT.
ON A NAKED 10R '06 GOT 285KMH ON HER TAPPED OUT ON A LONG STRAIGHT, POSSIBLY 290 IF IT WAS A TAD LONGER, SHE WASN'T GOING MUCH FASTER THOUGH.
ANOTHER ONE WITH HEAPS OF ENGINE MODS, 299 AND ANOTHER +2KRPM ON SO SITTING ON REDLINE (299 COMES AT 11K REDLINE IS 13K), THATS WITH 2 TEETH UP ON THE REAR, GOT FROM 180 INDICATED TO REDLINE IN 6TH GEAR ROLLING ON IN UNDER 6 SECONDS. YES IT'S FAST.... 250KMH = 225KMH THROUGH THE SPEED TRAPS, GO FIGURE. 299 INDICATED WOULD BE ROUGHLY 265-270 + THE 2K RPM IS AROUND 40-45KMH IN 6TH SO A TAD OVER OR ON 300 ANYWAY, I NEED TALLER THAN STOCK GEARS TO MAX HER OUT.

Gripe about the cost if you must but it's shitloads cheaper than the fine for 300kph

If you have a look at the site you might find some of the previous results interesting too, some bikes really have massive speedo exaggeration and others don't.

Sounds all good - wish it were closer.
Would "clear up" the odd bullshit claim you see here - you can't "go off the revs" as they are often far from accurate also.
Don't think anyone has to worry about the cops reading this - if they knew much about bikes they wouldn't believe the tall stories either.

Hi

A Instrument repairer once told me that the higher the top speed on the speedo the worse the accuracy problem becomes.
One would have though the advent of electronic speedo's would cure this - but it hasn't.
Infact it seems like a marketing ploy as nearly always they read high.

I have speedracer which is a small program that you imput details like final drive ratio and internal ratios etc and it tells you road speed in km/miles at any RPM, drop between gears etc.
If anyone wants it PM me and I'll email it as I can't add it here as a attachment.

Great for checking your gauges and for working out your ideal sprocket sizes.

Cheers

Centrifugal force would affect tyre size too, so even inflation pressure would have an effect...

My old K3 600 was indicating 288 on stock gearing. Was timed at an average of 261 over the flying quater which wasn't too bad for a bike with 600kms on the clock.

299 indicated on a thousand cc sportsbike is a piece of piss now days. I'll let ya know in November what the "actual" fastest speed I've travelled is.

As long as you don't smack into anything it isn't too bad. Hitting the deck hurts and the friction burns sting like hell. I've binned it at Puke flat out in 4th, which was 120mph at the drags. Went from the braking mark to the corner on my head/arse/back/hands/knees/elbows/etc etc. First day at the track on the new bike - damn!

Too fast. Too furious.

In the UK I have touched 145Mph, but is was just a bit too quick for me. My mates with their heads on the tanks were clocking mid 160s. Just a bit too fast for my liking. 120-130mph is a lot of fun. Any faster it seems to lose its appeal.

My present bike does 104mph (166kph) flat out. Not at all fast. Not at all furious and actually quite boring, hence the search forb a new bike!

After working back through and working out the actual wheel speed based on the engine RPM, primary drive, gearbox and final drive ratios. Claculating the percentage of wheel slip generated by the huge torque of my bike.

Average 143mph timed through the flying 1/4 mile - starting with about 800 metre runup. And I gained 1000rpm from the start of the 1/4 to the end... - that was on my old 'Yoshi' GSX1100ET/X over at Carterton.

Dunno exactly how fast, but 11,500 rpm in top, with tall gearing on during testing for Puke - on the McIntosh. Guess nudging 300kph, as was pulling a guestimated 160 kph in top at 6000rpm...

What's the fastest speed people have gone, indicated or calculated, and on what bike?

The speedo on my GS only goes to 180, but I've had the bike to just over 8500rpm in top, which means 8.5 x 30km/h =~255km/h.

not willing to say where it was

I am not sure of the math.

But I also had a GS (it unfortunatley died an unfortunate death) and my understanding was they were only good foe 240 absolute tops on a good day with a tail wind and a downhill slope.:jerry:
