I'm posting this in here as a response to a thread in Senior Members because I want a wider membership to see it.
I can't bring myself to feel sorry for the hard done by Mods. I have been a member since the paleolithic age, I've seen the changes in KB, and they're not for the better.
It's clear that some Mods have used their position to advance their own agendas, and have ruined this site as a result.
For evidence, look at the number of long term members who rarely bother to post.
To delete a post that admonished someone for wishing another member was near death is simply pathetic.
This was a biker site. It is not www.teacherisalwaysright.com , or www.pedantsRus.com. It is also not Second Life (but to look at some avatars, one would think so).

What changes are those?, because I thought getting rid of the few members who used this site to abuse others through the forums, via Pm or the rep system was a huge improvement and no other change that I've seen has affected the members as much as that, I'd say that the number of people that still visit this site every day and still post here indicates otherwise

How about providing a bit of evidence to back up your statement because having a quick browse through the member list indicates there's a few members longer term than you who quite regularly still post here
So you're saying that not a single one of these long term members has stopped posting for any other reason? did you ever think they worked out there was a life beyond KB?

You are sad Lou, this is what you think about at 4 in the morning.
The membership has doubled since I joined and okay some leave, however, this does not indicate a decline in the sites popularity.
I note that you title - An Opinion to justify your thread....
Do you expect this site to be perfect, or conforming to your ideals......that's not life Lou.
Effectively you are bashing the very people who help run this site....
This must be another 'Repost'......Have a great weekend.

No post have been deleted Lou. If you are talking about the posts that were in the 'Police Bike in Crash' thread then all posts by Katman and responses to his comment were put into a new thread:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=56472
They were not appropriate in the original thread, so I put them in a new thread so people could continue their discussion.

Since I started on permanent night shifts (2315 - 0845 hours) I have had way more time to look around the site and it is interesting because some people write about stuff that is important to them and hopefully to fellow kiwibikers and some people just use the site to :bash: others!!
Guess what that's the real world and it goes on everywhere - in schools, work places and definitely in the BEEHIVE! :Playnice:
So that is my opinion :angry2: which being a democratic country I am free to make and now I am going to think about writing up my report for handover before I go home and going to bed :zzzz:

No no no I tell you:angry2:, we all know the truth, KBer is the world and it's flat and the sun revolves around it and your just spreading propaganda to brainwash us al!. :argue:
Lou, I see in your profile that you've been a member for 5 years. Things are always gonna change. I bet at the start you thought the changes were for the better.
I for one hopes KBer keeps changing as it's what keeps the site interesting.

I can't bring myself to feel sorry for the hard done by Mods. I have been a member since the paleolithic age, I've seen the changes in KB, and they're not for the better.
Interesting post, and I'm very much in two minds about it.
There have been changes in KB, even over the relatively short time I've been here. I wouldn't consider myself a senior member. And I think they were for the worse, but I have a hard time blaming the mods for it. As I understand it, while the "old" KB was significantly less 'family friendly' and better for it there were a few members who took the opportunity to become really quite obnoxious through PM's in particular and this became a problem. What, really, are you supposed to do? I was never a victim of that and hence can't speak from experience, but I've never been a victim of the overbearing moderation either.
But something has changed. It's a lot less ... funny. Something has been destroyed and all statistics in the world aren't going to change that. I don't mind (at all) that people seem fit to treat KB as a cross between a psychiatrist, shortland street and an online confessional ... and it's not that which is causing KB's malaise. It's....
I dunno. You only need a little bit of chilli to make chilli con carne, but without it it's just meat and beans.

I still hate seeing threads that in my view were harmless moved to PD. It wouldn't be so bad if PD wasn't that dumb colour and was still a worthwhile place to talk. We have the rant and rave and joke threads etc but it seems like too many rant and rave stuff gets viewed as pointless and moved, but hell that's what much social interaction is in a group just any old random talk. This has made the place less funny as some above had said - why do we have to be so damn serious?
Like why was Lilsel's It's after 3am thread put there when it seemed harmless and while I wasn't up at that time why can't those that are communicate in a proper forum thread if they wish?
I just feel uncomfortable with so much stuff getting interfered with it doesn't seem like how I think this community should operate if it was to feel natural.

Like what? How has this site advanced someone’s agenda?
Or are you saying the thread reflects the opinion and ideology of the current mods?
What ya on about here? If a Mod does something you object about; then make a noise about it then (like Hitcher tossing the Hamilton thread in PD). Feed back and open comments at the time (well expressed) will generally educate the mods on how to run the site, hopefully.

Obviously, I'm going to agree with Mr Giradin. And his opinion is of particular significance, because he was completely out of the loop during the meltdown from which the New Kiwibiker was born. So he has a uniquely objective view of old and new.
Mr Giradin, perhaps without realising it, has summed the issue up in a single word. "This was a biker site". Was. It was "a site for all New Zealand motorcyclists" . Now it is not.
KB used to be a place where anyone who rode a bike was welcome. Anyone could come along and say their piece, subject to a few simple rules, basically those that would govern the same people meeting at the pub. Get too out of line and the bouncers would sin bin you for a while. Other than that KB did indeed reflect the wide variety of people who ride motorcycles. It was an inclusive society.
Now that has changed.
It is claimed that some people took advantage this simplicity to abuse others. I never saw it myself, but that's not to say it didn't happen. But using that claim as a pretext, the Heaven Born have changed the dynamic of the site as a whole . They've not just removed the errant members, they've imposed their own view of what people should be ALLOWED to think and say. There's even a phrase a mod coined for it. Fit in or Fuck Off (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1122000&postcount=103)
So now it's not a "site for all New Zealand motorcyclists". It's a site for motorcyclists who share the opinions and conventions of the ruling elite - middle class, well to do, po-faced, conservative, right wing, pro-establishment, authoritarian. Those who don't share that weltgeist are not welcome - they don't Fit In , and it will be suggested that they should Fuck Off. It's now an exclusive society.
Many have argued "change happens". So it does, but not all change is for the better. Whether the change on Kiwibiker is for the better or not will depend on ones own social position and opinion. Those who share the middleclass high ground of the Heaven Born will think it a jolly good change. Some rabble rousing lower class trouble makers have been booted out, there's a lot less drivel (ie opinions that differ from middle class received wisdom) , it's all good. And they will post up their approval. As we see.
And those who are not of the elite? Those who don't Fit In ? Well, some of them won't really care, they'll just regard the site as a resource, somewhere to ask a question or check out a ride, not a community. The rest, well, they've taken the hint and Fucked Off. So there won't be much of a dissenting voice to spoil the snug complacency of the Heaven Born and their supporters.
Many have commented that the site has lost its humour. The banter and piss taking are gone. That's inevitable. How often do you hear such things at a Rotary meeting? Humour is the mechanism whereby the tensions implicit in an inclusive society are discharged. But when you have an exclusive society , like the new KB, you have no tensions ("Jolly good" say the supporters of the changes, "those who don't agree with us should just shut up and Fuck Off"). So no need for humour to defuse them. Everybody just sits around smugly agreeing with one another and congratulating each other.
Has anyone noticed that the old KB vocabulary has almost disappeared ? Seldom now does anyone prak their sprotsbike in the gargre with the touriers and crusiers. A private vocabulary (jargon) is one of the signs of a vital community. When it disappears, it is a good indication that the community is dying.

Good points Ixion. I don't think I have a bad bone in my body and I doubt I could have been blamed for abusing anyone so I am not one of the people that Ixion refers to about "fit in or fuck" off because I am happy to fit in anywhere but having been here for almost as long as Lou I do feel more uncomfortable with the place because I have seen too much fun stuff messed with. OK maybe because I'm a nice guy I miss the true shit, but many of the threads I've followed that seemed fine to me (a white middle class reasonably well off professional) have just gone phhhhttttt - off to PD never to appear on the New Posts list again. WTF for?
Could I suggest the mods just have a rest for a week and act like ordinary citizens and just let the threads wax and wane and then at the end of that trial period see whether that there is not a better life after all?

I really enjoy KB - it's such a quick and easy way to meet likeminded people, especially when you've just moved back to NZ.
The ONLY complaint I have with this site is that PD is in red text, which I find impossible to read and therefore don't bother to try.
I think PD is a worthwhile function to have - just kill the red text!! Make it the same as the rest of the site.
Then you can have the conversations continuing if people wish.
Perhaps a poll on this? Or who would one direct a request to?

Correct.
Well, some of them won't really care, they'll just regard the site as a resource, somewhere to ask a question or check out a ride, not a community.
For those who see it as a resource (a communication tool if you rpefer) it makes little odds. But it was a community, and I , for one, thought that a GoodThing. Now it's not.
Maybe it is you who has changed Ixion and now your issues / views do not fit with the site..who knows.
Perhaps I have. But then so must also Messrs Giradin, Merv and others. And, even if I have changed, in the old KB it would not have mattered. It was inclusive. Room for all manner and conditions of men (and women of course). You implicity accept there that those who have the "wrong" views will be unwelcome. Which is exactly what the old KB never was. Everybody welcome.

I think you're half right.
I did enjoy kb A LOT better with all u old bastards giving out awesome advice to dicks like me etc, much more of a welcoming site. But kb is a victim of its own success the more people come the more chaos follows.
The mods are a bunch of wankers but thats how it is, why not change yourself and keep kb a better place? Nothing ever stays the same it always changes and you have to change yourself if you want to stay.
The fit in or fuck off comment i think was way outta line.
luckily thanks to RubberSideDown we have a place no one knows about where generally the mods don't stick there dick in, although i have gotten an infraction in there before. its a place where the shit from kb don't come in. Its really amazing

I noticed that a couple of days ago, too.
There's a certain amount of "life moves on". I've always hated it, but it's always been there. In my yoof I was a member of "Maldon Yacht Club", a vibrant sailing club with a multi-generation community built around it. It found itself with the 'up and comers' being supported by, more or less, a single member. When he moved away we all knew it was the end. The numbers from the club were good, there were more families joining but everyone knew the spirit had left the place and it was just inevitable from there and it was.
Life moves on. Things change. Communities change. Sometimes it's for the best, and sometimes it isn't.

Kb has changed and not for the better, I've said before that I don't know what it is thats changed but its not the mods. I was wrong. A classic example of this is the recent 07R6 vs 08R6 thread where it turned into an absolute awesome 'ridicule' of a member. Good times. Whats more I'm sure theres about 10 posts in that thread that claim it to be the best thread of '07. It got PD'ed
But something has changed. It's a lot less ... funny.
Agreed. Mostly due to the very witty members that have been discouraged or banned from the site.
I don't mind (at all) that people seem fit to treat KB as a cross between a psychiatrist, shortland street and an online confessional ... and it's not that which is causing KB's malaise. It's....
I mind. The odd occasion is fine, but fuck me if there aren't screeds (sp?) of threads about it. Not only that but threads that start with "****'s thread about his problems made me think about my problems blah blah". I'm not a typical cave-dwelling man, I talk about my shit to people...but sure as shit I'm not going to air my stuff on KB. I think theres enough personal grief for Suzuki owners to deal with than them having to deal with mine too.
I dunno. You only need a little bit of chilli to make chilli con carne, but without it it's just meat and beans.
You have a brilliant way of putting things sometimes RD.

Jeez Grahameeboy, no it wasn't. Admittedly it was mildly better than the shit that J&Humour mongers post but it was dumb boring crap. Theres better places to look at pics of peoples bums.
I prefer it the way it is. No baiting, less agro, and more focus on motorcycles.
Really BD? Sometimes I cringe when I look at the new posts page, all I see is thread upon thread about relationship problems, newspaper excerpts being quoted, and wishing millionaire adventurers dead.
Mods need to lighten up. I'm not into mod bashing generally, its boring, pointless and unimaginative....but this is the way I see things. How can you PD something that is (again) regarded by a few as the best thread this year and then PD it? Good natured pisstaking. Argh!!! ...I'm loosing my momentum.
side note: mods do a lot of work, I was one once. Met half of them (good people) and consider one to be a good friend even having not spent more than a hour with them in real-life.
I used to spend ALL THE TIME on Kb. Arguably I spend a lot more time on here than I should but its circumstantial now. I couldn't give a flying if I missed logging on for days, and I don't.

I for one have no problem with the way KB is being run at the moment. I am often impressed with how well threads like the "Depression" thread is handled.
There was a time on KB when it was getting really nasty when it came to abuse of members. This cause the site to have to get heavier with modding. Had they not stepped in when they did this site could have all ended up one big PD, in which case I for one would have not wanted to have anything more to do with KB. This of cause is just my option.

I agree totally Merv [shit this is becoming a problem ain't it??? you and I agreeing so often lately is making me look bad!!!! lol]
That is the one major grip I have with this site..is that harmless stuff is deemed pointless at times...a harmless giggle or windup...is just that...and couple of cheeky remarks here and there...letting peoples personalities come out helps people relax in a big group like this...and as its spankme's site...its not a a PC democrecy... and one more thing...
The moderaters on here would be alarmed at the amount of green rep spankme gave finn and dover when they were on here [although finn seems to be back]...which in a way seems almost like approval!!

You're right Ix.

Yes indeed, KB has got boring.
Wading through a succession of "KB has changed", "Bring back the old days", "Moderator conspiracy" threads is incredibly boring.
KB has changed? Of course it has!
People come, people go, just like anywhere else, and the group dynamics change. Change is the only constant. As much as you may want to, you can't turn back the clock. And sorry, the moderators can't turn it back for you. If you think they can, grow the hell up.
The total membership is rapidly approaching the 10,000 mark, and a damn sight more people are joining than leaving. Yes, many of the "site characters" are gone, but are being replaced with others. However, it will never be the same.
If you're so keen to have things the way they used to be, perhaps you should set up another forum site and invite "the good old guys" to join you. But be prepared to see the other side of these "personalities"...
Also - a shocking relevation - the moderators sometimes make mistakes. It's a terrible burden, but we can't all be perfect.
However, bear in mind that the moderators don't make the rules here, they simply try to enforce the site rules laid down by Spankme. If you don't like the rules, try taking the matter up with him - I'm sure you'll get an appropriate response.

Come on Lou, Ixion - things change guys... KB still is a community of sorts. It's just that now we aren't the major posters.
I now see pics of group rides and can barely recognize anyone. To me that is the biggest sign of the changes here. KB to me was a place to come to learn about group riders and talk shit, now I barely know most of the people here. These people being new people - have different personalities and seem to want to talk about different things.
Who cares mate? The mods, well, poor folks are trying to be all things to all people. If Joni was a man I'm sure she'd have bashed the life out of a few of you but being a woman she is more sensitive and lets some of mischief makers get away with so much. Hitcher is an intelligent basket case with his grammar issues and his sensitive little personality...:oi-grr:
In the end, even before in 2004 - it is and fundamentally will always be a website. Any communities that arise out of this and translate into real life will be up to you.
All my real world friends who I used to hang out with everyday (in Oz now, so can't physically hang out with them) are KB'ers: Zapf, Erik, RedR1 and Duckaddict. Then there are the friends I have made for life: Jim2, Joni, Sugilite, Frosty, Barbender, Mandownunder, Kiwifruit, R6_Kid, Buggy, Warr....I'll cut the list short here although I could go on and on.
Mate, that's the community. The rest is just text on a screen.

This is a great thread as everyone is right - the site is always going to change and someone is always going to be upset :crybaby: BUT we all have a choice about what threads we read and respond to. If you don't want to read about someones problems or about "personal stuff" then don't go into the site or if you go into a thread and don't like it - leave the damn thread and go look somewhere else - don't diss the people that are using it!!:oi-grr:
When we are new to the site a lot of us sit back and read the threads but don't post in case we offend anyone but as you get used to the fact that KBers actually enjoy posting and not worrying about offending others then we start having an "opinion"

Have to agree 100%. I know that I have a colourfull past here and have thrown my fair share of shyte about. However I'm now more interested in having a good laugh, rather than a laugh at someone elses expence. I also agree that there appears to be ulterior motives at times with the way the site is policed. The thread carrying on about a friend of mine riding with no helmet and no hands was a good example. It was allowed to carry on, despite the fact that it was getting personal. Add to that, I have seen much on KBer disappear or moved to PD, for far far less. I am one who tends to post alot less than what I used to. But I think this is because there is alot more content that simply is not worth replying to, let alone reading. As for some members getting upset of some of the content of this site? Its up to you if your looking at it that you read what you don't like or just move on to the next thread. This site has allways been a site for bikers, not just about biking. However I have been here long enough to see a cycle of events, that it would appear to have merely come full circle severl times. I know I've done my share of whinging also, but as it was clearly pointed out to me in the past, if you dont like it, there is the door. Likewise if any of you do not like a thread or post, there is a little x in the top right courner of your web brouser window (well, for windows users), feel free to use it. At the end of the day I had to break my back and go haywire a bit to finally have a good honest look at myself. Why it took so long? Probably because I did not like what was there. Could be much the same for others, mods and members alike. :niceone:

KB is just a way of keeping in contact with them and orgaising rides, getting help when I need it and helping others if I can. I still  KB.

I have seen alot of "getting personal" moved to PD, but lately I have also seen the same, if not worse (IMO) allowed to continue into a right proper preformance. The last of which finally got locked by Joni. Now I see the same in this thread and yes I have put in a reply, an opinion. But yes I do think this thread has gone a tad too far and do not understand why it has not been "delt" with, when that has been in the past what happens. Maybe its just that KBer has changed yet again, no idea.
I'm not complaining either, just voicing and observation and an opinion. But then again, maybe thats what is considered personal? No idea, but I will never loose sleep over it either.

Every online community I've known, people sometimes talk of the "Good ol' days" when it first started. It's nothing new, but you can't stay small.
Having this many different people being able to converse at one place is not natural. You're never going to be able to please everyone, so I don't even bother trying. As a webmaster I only care about one thing, numbers. The number of people who visit this site daily has been increasing from the start and shows no sign of slowing.
Everything else I leave up to the mods to decide. Not everyone is going to like how they do things, but this is why we have more than one site of any type on the net.

I joined right at the end of the old KB, and only caught a couple of months of it while I was still figuring out how to ride a motorcycle, so the picture I got of it wasn't the best.
However, there seems a much lower level of self-referential humour. Ixion, with his thoughts on gargre and sprotsbikes has touched one of the more subtle aspects of this, but it exists across the board. There's a lower level of intimacy; personal distance between members seems heightened, and because of this, really `close' humour feels less comfortable and doesn't seem to spontaneously appear. It's like you can tell a family member she's getting fat, but you wouldn't necessarily say that to an acquaintance.
Why? One big reason could be the size of the community. I'd be interested in seeing a graph of KB population over time. I suspect that the growth curve is rather steep over the past year or so. As the population grows, especially rapidly, such close relationships become less sustainable, and are also more difficult to form -- so as members fade away (perhaps because of this effect), it's harder to replace them. I see it crop up from time to time -- GiJoe1313 and Donor's little 250cc KB subset would perhaps be an example -- but it doesn't occur on such a large scale as it perhaps used to.
In response to the growth of the site, moderation has increased its role. Small communities where all the members know each other well are largely self-moderating. Larger, more loose networks require some degree of guidance; how much, and in what way is a delicate and difficult matter.
I think these changes have been under way for years, but only recently have people begun to realise what's going on, and their responses have perhaps exacerbated the effects.

Could I suggest the mods just have a rest for a week and act like ordinary citizens and just let the threads wax and wane and then at the end of that trial period see whether that there is not a better life after all?
An excellent suggestion. Moderators need to remind themselves that just because they can do something doesn't mean that they should. Moderating is an unenviable and generally thankless task and it is sometimes hard to think clearly and objectively above the roar of the crowd. It's even harder if one is particularly close to a piece of "action" for whatever reason.
Members would be astounded to learn what can go on in the day of a Moderator's life.
Spankme's decision to make the Senior Moderators' roles time-restricted is excellent, and should help to ensure that heads do not become stuck too far up their owner's arses. The air smells nicer today, that's for sure!

I like KB better now but always remember, while its not a real place, a lot of the behaviors are modeled in the real world.
I imagine the web to be like a big ocean that has no limits. A creator (demi god like being), dissatisfied with wandering the oceans decides to create ‘land’ so websites are born after the creator persuades one of the bandwidth gods to part with some firm soil and are then taxed a regular offering to keep the land above the tide. Adventurous tourists visit the lands newly created and some decide they would like to settle there for a while. Some like the lands so much they donate offering contributions to the creator to offset the demands of the bandwidth gods and some take on responsibilities a bit like the mayor or sanitation dept.
Eventually, the new lands become civilized and loose their boisterous brawling excitement that exists in all pioneering settlements and start to become civilized with standards to suit the majority of the settlers (now of the more cautious latecomer variety) who now bring in the wimmin folk and start raising families and building permanent houses, streets etc. The pioneers don’t like that and resist the changes until they get annoyed with not being allowed to kill the natives or pee in the streets and jump into their canoes and paddle of to find other new places where they can still have fun…
Some decide to become pirates and regularly return to wreak plunder on the old lands and some return to guide the less adventurous to the new worlds.
Others return and not having found anything else new and exciting that was actually better than what they gave up when they went adventuring try to gather enough force to overthrow the order of things and establish a new order – in the mirror of the older order of which they are now very fond. This never works because the ultimate authority is the guy that pays the bills to the bandwidth gods to keep the land afloat and he’s pretty much got alllll the aces and like the gods of old – beyond petty rebellion.
Its all fun…. But not worth loosing a leg over…

Agreed. Mostly due to the very witty members that have been discouraged or banned from the site.
You have a brilliant way of putting things sometimes RD.

I couldn't give a flying if I missed logging on for days, and I don't.

i agree with ya mate, my 'woe is life' bucket is full enough without having to come on a bikers web site and read about some fookers cat gettin run over or how depressed they are or some fookin article on the news that every bastad and his goat has seen through other medium however they stills see fit to post a thread about it on a bikers site....??!!! oh.. i'm depressed... HELP ME !!!
By true opinions do you mean those that agree with you?
you're devious and sly, apposed to Grahameeboy who's a deviant, i wonder how you got appointed
But not worth loosing a leg over…
i stopped reading about here.. " I imagine the..." :zzzz:

I once had a head on accident with this old c#nt who told me that he had been driving for more years than I had been alive, therefore, it must have been my fault! Even though I was still on my side of the road.
And maybe the long term members have a life now!?

This is a fascinating thread!! People are bemoaning the changes and how everyone who is funny has left because they couldn't :Playnice: If you actually sit and read this thread from start to finish it is such a  because some people don't seem to have any idea that what they are saying makes everyone else:lol:. It is also funny that a thread that was basically about one person's opinion has generated more interest and posts then the 3 dozen threads or so all around it which are about "bikes" and "bike related stuff" :2thumbsup
The people complaining about other people whinging are actually whinging themselves. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!

I too have been known to occasionally have an opinion. But my opinion is more opinionated than all of your opinions so therefore in my opinion, contributers to this thread are way too much of the opinion that we all should be able to share our opinions and to post here just because we have an opinion, which is always right. Right? But then again if you have no opinion I guess you could agree with my view (opinion) that we probably wont get to hear your point of view (opinion). Then You must be on yer bike.

If people spent more time riding rather than being armchair bikers, then this issue would go away because it would be seen in the proper context. KB is a wonderful site for staying in touch, helping each other i.e. the REALLY important stuff; the rest is irrelevant in the scheme of things.
Incidentally, when I was riding back from Whangapoua to Coromandel Town on Saturday lunchtime, I saw a number of Yammy sportbikes and an Aprilia RSV coming the other way over the Coro Hill - KB'ers perchance? Didn't have time to wave in those twisties!

Unlike the above I don't have any opinion.
I'm just always right.
The rest may have opinions though, I'll take notice of same as I see fit.
