Is it a popular place for bikers?
and why?

I am planning to do a trip to Coromandel end of this year :)
or should I say... Tour? lol

Oh and also, My current bike is capable of doing this right? lol

It's just a plan ;)

Definitly do it man. Your bike will do it, just take it easy and have heaps of fun. Is an awesome road with heaps of twisties and alot of great scenery, makes for great shots of ya bike.

And your Scorpio will handle all the gravel roads with ease too. See more than just the coro-loop, head right up to the end!

Hey EJ, if you want to do it - I'd ride with you no worries mate, it's biker heaven out there and some very interesting sights to see!

It's a very nice ride, a wide variety of different roads. Long sweepers, very tight (marked 15kph!) twisties, gorgeous scenery. What was the route we took, Justin? Half loop?

Do it! Small bike, doesn't matter. The only thing is cars will hold you up and it'll be tough to pass them.

Hell yes, ride it and you will see!

Well, you can make a day of it like most of us do, and do the 'coro loop/coro GP". There are a couple of different routes to take, but all incompass the 'coro loop'... the only thing that varies is distance and direction.

Having ridden a Scorpio myself i would say hell yeh! You won't be the fastest person out there but those scorpios have more than enough grunt to get you up the hills and through the twisties. There are a few parts where the 600cc+ bikes top 200kmh and a bit more if they want to, but there is nothing wrong with cruising and taking in the scenery.

If you want to make it a tour, there are many 'B' roads, that turn to gravel etc that will let you see a lot more than the average sportsbike rider is brave enough to discover.

I live on the Coro loop, it's fun and scarcely patrolled on the right days. I'd be cautious on the coastal route, not many second chances with the rocks and whatnot.

The road between Thames and Whangamata is a bit rough, windy and wet, watch out for diesel seeping from the hills and landslips, especially in the rain, probably a bit intimidating for the unskilled, but that being said its really up to the individual. Personally I enjoy it regardless and didn't have too many problems, but a few friends found it a bit scary.

My favourite part is the really tight bends going up hill and down between Whangamata and Waihi, and the roads close to Coromandel town after the 50km/h zones and the dodgy coastal areas, great views and tight smooth seal.

If you are keen to do the loop, try and do it midweek. I did it last week on a Wedensday and it was a absolute blast. Almost no traffic apart from the odd logging truck and they are easy to pass. The road up the west coast is a little rough but alot of fun on little bike, heaps of very tight corners. The road from Coromandel over to Whitianga and down the east coast is also a sweet ride but better on a bigger bike I have heard. All up it is a great ride but a long way if you are not use to spending all day on your bike. I usually stop often to stretch and take some pics. Biggest thing to remember is slow in fast out there are more than a couple of corners that tighten up, oh and have fun.

PLANS CHANGED:

I want to go to Coromandel next week, during the weekdays.

Who thinks I'm not yet ready?
or
Who thinks I must have somebody to ride with me?

Suggestions?

Capable you are Luke. Throttle control you must.

Those are some beautiful roads. The only reason they should be considered too much is if "your enthusiasm exceeds your skills" to use a favorite saying of MackTheKnife.

I recommend that if you cannot find a wingman you let someone know your plans and that you text them at each stop so that if you disappear they know where to look.
I have previously posted the following rookie touring tips.http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=884124&postcount=17
Not all will relate to you but I was trying to keep it general.
As with all advice: Listen, Learn, discard what is of no use or does not work for you.

Oh and this is a long ride, be sure you are fit enough.
Done at or below the limit your are looking at about 5-6 hours riding time return from Auckland.

Make sure when you go down there that you go via Whitford, Clevedon, Kawakawa, Kaiaua (fush & chups!) and Miranda before joining SH1. On the way back, peel off right at the bottom of the hill past Maungatawhiri and go back through Hunua, Alfredton, Brookby, Whitford etc Awesome trip, esp with 2 days to do it.
