speedo needle wobble. honda mc22 (cbr250RR)

Howdy kb,

Ive recently got a beautiful mc22, but the speedo needle wobbles all over the show.

I thought about oiling the cable, but its driven off the sprocket not the front tyre, is it the same set up as how they run off the tyre? i.e., can u just un screw it and oil the cable or is it a little bit more involved?

Will oiling the cable help?

p.s. if its running off the sprocket, if i put a larger one on the rear my speedo will be out? is there anyway to fix that?

I suggest draining the speedo assembly of all fluids, sounds to me like the needle is drunk. Perhaps if you open up the dash you will find it has a substantial amount of alcohol??? :bash:

I thought your speedo was driven off the gearbox, but either way, yes, if you change your sprocket gearing from standard it will effect the speedo somewhat, don't think there is a correction for it on the CBR250 as it doesn't have digital dash. Perhaps figure out the gearing % change, and draw up a spreadsheet so you know how much out you will be at each 10kmh interval.

Yep, it is run off the final-drive output shaft (the one the front sprocket attaches to). A wobbly speedo needle can be caused by a less than optimum cable - I doubt that 'oiling' it will help. If it is the cable, check that both end connectors are firm and that the cable routing is ok. If not the cable, then it is something in the speedo/housing that is causing the problem. Sometimes the speedo internal body is rubber-mounted, isolating it from the outer shell, to minimise vibration - perhaps there is a problem there?

Check out the speedo drive socket that sits over the front sprocket centre.
The socket is just plastic and can wear round leading to wobbling and eventually the speedo won't go at all.

hey dude, can you post a way higher res picture I'll try and sus out one for mine, i cant tell if mines that rounded, it doesnt look tooo bad.

Ok here is my socket, does it look rounded? are new ones expensive? i guess I shouldn't put oil on it?

Here's mine after the speedo completely stopped.

$13 from Honda.

Hard to tell if yours is as bad as mine was. It still had enough left in it to not want to let me spin the socket on the shaft by hand.

To test it properly I held a powerdrill chuck against the socket (careful of fingers) and saw that the needle was not wobbling (making sure that the drill was spinning the same way as the sprocket would). If it still wobbles it's something else.

The next thing to try would be to unscrew the speedo cable outer from the speedo, then pull out the cable for inspection. If the cable is on it's last legs (eg rusted almost all the way through), that could cause a minor wobble.

If it's not the drive socket or cable... it gets more complicated. Good luck.

Do u have the part number for it? or is there a good website that you can get part numbers from (i know kaswasaki have a great one)? just rang up cyclespot and they said $200 but i know they are looking at the wrong part.

Yeah, nah they are trying to sell you the whole lower speedo unit. You just need the drive socket.

I don't have the part no. because most the books are in Japanese (and cbr250.com is down at the moment).

No doubt this has been said already, but its probably a buggered cable thats causing the wobble.

My old Guzzi changes the line up of the speedo numbers as it feels like.It has never been fiddled with by anyone.

IMO your socket doesn't look rounded off, it is most likely the cable itself.

Try oiling the cable from the speedo end first, if that doesn't improve then I would suggest rebuilding the cable. Spectrum will do this for about $25.

I bought a new socket (cost $11 bux so why not) and oiled the cable - will see how it goes tomorrow.

How does the cable come off? on my old gpz is was real easy but I can't see how it works on the mc22? i can take it off from the speedo, and off the sprocket, but the cable itself cant come out of the cover?

My needle use to bounce hard when I hit a bump. One day speedo stopped working - investigation revealed cable had broken off. Got a new one from wreckers for $20 and now speedo is good as gold.

Rip the fucker out. Undo the screw (Green Arrow) grip the cable with your hand (red) and rip it out in the direction of the purple arrows.

Edit: That's on my CBR400RR, so there might be some minor differences here and there.
