One of my many problems I have is I hate crap food and that, for me, means soggy Mc shit burgers that some poor underpaid wageslve kid prepares and probably didn't wash his hands after he had a quick whack in the back.
I would rather take my chances at a crispy fried meaow burger.
My point is that, to me at least, Mcshit, Kentucky fried Crap and Bugger King all sell the same stuff, with quality differing slightly store to store.
If I'm in another town I'm generally keen to try the local best.
Variety is the spice of life? or somthing like that?
Every town has good and bad independently owned takeaways so if you have a local favourite please post details below so we can all check it out when we pass by and avoid the hassle of getting the shit one.
Also, being decriptive helps, some like grease, others dont. Some are OK paying $2 for a small scoop of chips, others Aren't!
Remember: supporting independenly owned small businesses is a good thing!

You like Indian? We reckon the Curry Village in Porirua is great to eat in or take-out.

Burger Fuel is a fav burger place of ours. Not cheap, but then the goods are fresh and yummy!!
The Curry place in Newlands (Currytogo) do bloody fine curries for a takeaway place.
Asian Takeaways in Khandallah shopping centre do pretty good chinese grub.
Jacobees (ala our KB friend Elle) do fab pizzas in Carterton!!!!
Johnsonville Fish Supply have fantastic chips, fish is pretty good too!!
And I adore Hogs Breath Cafe for their Prime Rib and Hog tail fries, and if you're still hungry after that (I doubt it), you go on down to Strawberry Fare and get the most devine dessert (I recommend the Devil's Dreamcake or the Brownie ).
Hope some of that helps!!

I second Burger Fuel.. mmm bastard!
As for Hogs Breath I've never been myself but one of my mates (who used to be a chef, and is a fat bastard) raves about their greatness.
Upper Hutt - Texakarna just north of McDonalds.. Gourmet burgers, but greasy school not healthy burgerfuel school. Just been sold now thou so new owners might not be so good.
Hamilton - Canvas (used to be the Museum Cafe), nice food. Tends to be at the nobbier end of the scale (no pie and wedges here lol)
Hamilton - Cobb & Co Chartwell - Surprisingly good service and food for a chain restaurant. Was very pleasantly surprised.
Hamilton - Valentines - Used to be ok but has gone completely to shite. Last time we went there they'd pulled out the kids play area to put in spacies, which was full of homies, the bar was full of drunks who looked like they were from Ford Block (think once were warriors), and my waiter was gay and a homie (I shit you not.. "au bro can I gets ewes some drinks".. with gay lisp... ) The missus and I were so disgusted that we turned down the offer of a free return meal when we complained because we will never go back.. Ever..
Hamilton - Barzurk - Havnt been for awhile but the food and service weren't too bad last time I went. Gourmet pizzas n stuff.. Bit like a cross between Hell and One Red Dog.
Hamilton - Le Dome Belgian Beer Cafe - Great beer, great food.. Greatly pricey! Some absolutely to die for imported belgian beers, served very traditionally. Great food in the restaurant upstairs too. I love my $12 handles of Hoegaarden but my bank manager doesnt!
Hamilton - Dinsdale Roast.. best roast place in town.. nuff said
Te Kuiti - BP station cafe (Bernies??). The cafe attached to the BP station at the south end of town. Mostly greasy stuff, but semi-reasonably priced and generally acceptable quality. Regular stop for me when I'm heading south.

If you want to read reviews of cafes and restaurants around the country, you could try www.dineout.co.nz, just about every place in NZ is probably reviewed there by now. In Taupo if you're after takeaways I can recommend a few places...
Most bikers hang out at Burbury's Cafe on SH1 on the lakefront, there's a long line of bikes parked outside it every time there's a sunny weekend, but the food is merely average. There are better cafes in town, like Sierra, Bodyfuel, Indulgence, Villino's.
Jabies Doner Kebab (on Horomatangi St, opposite Starlight Cinema), they make them fresh infront of you, with your choice of lamb/chicken/felafel, sauces and salads. Much fresher and tastier than any burgers in town, and not soggy like Subway. A far cry from the dodgy doner kebab joints in the UK where you could be eating someone's cat for all you know.
Kissa-Kai (on Horomatangi St, next to Starlight Cinema), they make great sushi and Japanese noodle/rice bowl dishes (e.g. ramen, katsudon), I go there all the time.
The best pizzas in town are made by Volcanic Kitchen (upstairs in the Clubhouse nightclub, they used to be on SH1) and Portofino (an Italian restaurant a few doors down from Hell Pizza on Tuwharetoa St). Hell Pizza are ok, but avoid Pizza Hut altogether.
There are a couple of fish and chip places in town, I normally go to Seakraft on Tuwharetoa St, who do a decent Chinese smorgasboard also.

Mt Albert/Auckland - Gieger Takeaways (Sandringham rd). Kept fed during my student days ($5 burger/chips/drink combo, $3 fry rice combo), and bloody nice Asian couple.
Best pies in the world are the Oxford Pies, can buy them from a nice lady in a dairy in Huntly.
Good cheap kfc style chicken (but looks suspiciously like rat) - at the chicken place in New Lynn by the Titirangi rd intersection

Burgers....Fergburger without a doubt.
Fush & Chups....The Fishbone.
You'll never be disappointed at either.
And this is Queenstown, no grease is allowed in the town boundary.
Everything is gently sauteed in fresh mountain air and dressed with alpine lake water.
