broken mirror
cracked rear faring
smashed the front faring
bent gear lever
snapped clutch
she said she will pay for all damage is it fair to make her pay?
and where can i get new parts for my damaged bike?
and cheers to the biker who picked her up off the side of the road! she is fine her ego is a little dented but she still wants to learn to ride! :woohoo:

If she is willing to pay... let her, but if I was you I would also pay some... mainly because well its your responsibility you knew shes a learner no experience etc. but that is the risk you take.. maybe go halfs (look for cheap second hand parts)
The damage doesn't sound to bad unless you want to get the fair fully fixed again (I personally would worry about the crack in the rear errr I mean the rear fairing crack ;) ) as for the front how bad is smashed...
mirror, clutch etc got to a biker wrecker to see what they have etc may get it cheaper...

Well I would suggest that you may have erred in teaching her to ride where and how you did. You really should have used an empty car park or sent her on an handling skills course.
IMHO you as the teacher are responsible or the damage to the bike.

post some pics?
Levers are about $40 a pop, depending where you get them from, mirror shouldnt be more than $80 but i've heard FXR ones from suzuki are a ripoff... maybe ask some of the bucket racers if they have any for sale.
Use a bit of force to bend the gear lever back, assuming its the lever and not the rearset.
Fairings can be plastic welded if you want to go that far.

Hey fireball,
From my experience ...*ahem*...when you crash someone's else bike, who just lend it to you kindly, you just really want to pay for it.
It is not your bike but you are responsible for the damage!
only my 0.00002 cts ;)

:crybaby: poor wee bike. Great your flatmate hasn't been put off!
Don't know how I'd deal with the cost of repairs in that situation. If I let someone ride my bike or I ride someone else's it's on a "you drop it you pay for it" basis but if I was teaching someone I'd feel like it was partially my responsibility.
I'm sure you'll work something out between you. Hopefully it's not too expensive to fix.

Dont do it on a road, try a carpark or perhaps in a paddock (on an old traillie). Generally its 'if you bend it, you mend it' when riding someone else's bike but in this case, being a complete newbie, I think she isn't that responsible for the damage.
well, tonght we kinda learned "Half-cheek-knee-down" technique lol
Only on presumtion, and I will be corrected if I am wrong, your profile tends toward a relatively new road rider. Perhaps knee down, or anything like it at this stage, unless you are specifically learning to ride the track, is a little prematuire.

Mirrors are the same as RG150 ones I think. I smashed one of those on my wife's bike - $130 for a new one - went to Cycletreads and got some aftermarket ones for $25 each - much bigger and better quality than the OEM ones. Measure the distance between the pins and get ones that mathc this.
New levers from cycletreads are reasonable too.
Gear lever needs removed, stuck in a vice, apple a little heat and bend back into shape.
Fairings? Probably panel & paint shop for some plastic welding - that'll be your biggest ticket item.

What he said. Most people who let others ride their bike do so on a you break it you fix it basis. So you could make her pay for the lot. But I wouldn't. I'd get her pay for at least 1/2 and pick up the rest as I'd know the risks of lending my bike out.

Leave all broken stuff on that doesn't need urgent replacing, and tell her she can pay you back after she has finished 5 more lessons.
When she has finished enough lessons to sit her basic handling then she can pay you back and you will get the bike fixed, and she will get her license.

sorry about your bike - that sucks
my 2c ............if i broke someone's anything, i'd feel i had to fix it ......... wouldn't feel right about it if i didn't - and certainly wouldn't feel i could ask to borrow it again
you might be doing her a favour by letting her fix it, as offered?
Macktheknife
13th September 2007, 18:02
Good manners says if she borrowed it to practice on, she pays for the damage.
If you were teaching her to ride, as you first posted, then I would say 50/50.
Good luck getting it sorted though.

Here's my 2 cents then:
First I take it that she binned your bike and not her own.
Is it fair to make her pay for that?
I would say no.
As an inexperienced rider should you be teaching others to ride in any case? If so, this is on a 'your risk' basis. Unless you have insurance to cover for learners to ride on your bike (which you will not have) then insurance cover is out too (oh - there is always fraud if you are comhrehensive - but I would not go there ... )
The one exception to you taking full responsibility for you to lend your bike to someone without the skills, experience etc. to handle it would be this:
In advance you had a frank discussion outlining that any damage would be at their expense.
If this conversation did not happen (except maybe inside your head) then its your issue and you need to deal with it.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but if this came up before me for arbitration this is the way it would go.

Places like that will quote you over $9000 to fix, because they will use brand new genuine parts. What you need to do is ring wreckers, look on trademe etc, and you will get it back the way it was for under $300. I was quite surprised at how cheap parts were when I lowsided my bike off a bank and had to replace the screen, rear panels, subframe, etc.
I had to replace the following:
Speedo cable $20
Seat Latch: $30
Tail Piece: $30
Postage: $5
Rear Panels (Gold): $50
Subframe: $20
Tail Light: $20
Postage: $12
Screen: $35 incl shipping
So total that's $222.

Just get her to pay for a pair of after market mirrors and clutch ($100 all up), bend the gear lever back and get her to throw u a bit for the devaluation of fairings. They don't look that bad anyway

from what i understand she was going down the road (gentle downhill slope) was doing about 50 to 60 kmph went to take a left turn into another road and hit a raised bit of seal got a fright and jammed on the front break

(didnt sound nasty or anything but must've been a reason for her breaking down so still off to mechanic she goes for service n checkup :doctor:)... however FB tried n she just didnt wanna go ... selective bike?? or maybe I just have the magic touch?! hehe...

You need a new fairing to get a WOF? That doesn't sound right. Have you investigated plastic welding?
You can buy mirrors at Cycletreads for about $30, and I can't imagine a clutch lever being much more than $100 or so, tops.
Still, I guess them's the breaks when one is training uninsured learners on one's bike, etc.
Are you planning on selling the bike immediately, or continuing to ride it for a while?

the bike is sold my flatmate bought it i am now bikeless you could say but ive got LilSels till i buy a new bike the plastic cant be welded as its bent right over onto the digital display. if i try heat and rebend it to weld it, it will snap right off so have to replace that whole piece and its the whole left fairing not just a little piece
altho anyone is welcome to come over and check it out if they can fix it id be really greatful and you will be rewarded for your efforts (box of beer or something)
