View Full Version : YZF-R125 for 2008

Yamaha has recently launched the YZF-R125, i pint sized version of the latest and greatest R6.
It has a single banger, four stroke, 125cc engine that pumps out a whopping 15hp at 9,000rpm, and 11nm of torque at 8,000rpm, redlining at 10,000rpm.
It takes it's stying ques from its older brother, and is slated to be a direct competitor for the CBR125. Unfortunately it won't pack the punch to take on the RS125 for power, but it will probably take out the fight for all round usability as a learner package, and will also most likely feature a much more competitive price.
It would be my guess that within a year or so the Malaysians/Indonesians/Canadians/Brits will have a large range of aftermarket bits to spruce up the power output for those wanting a bit more go from the bike.
Either way it looks to me like a mighty stylish commuter, and an awesome learner bike. Fingers crossed for future L platers that Yamaha NZ brings these into the country - I'm sure keen for a play on one!

Probably pretty thumping! I was thinking similar, but more towards re-engineering an FZR with better internals (the FZR250RR is supposedly the most powerful 250 anyway)... and adding that to an 06 R6 chassis. Of course, because you are dealing with less than half the power a lot of the chassis could be sacrificed...
But with it only costing $1500+ shipping for a shock, swingarm and set of USD 06 R6 forks it would probably cost less to build up than some of the 250's for sale at Red Baron!

As a 15 year old with a new bike licience I'd suspect that I would have been utterly stoked to have something like that. I possibly would have liked it more than the 1980 RD250LC that I had as a 17 year old as I suspect that this wee gem would handle far better. For a youngin wanting to get into motorcycling, this would be a great start. It looks very nice also, any hints on the price?

My other thought was how light those rims look. Surely a good engineer/fabricator could widen them to take 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tyres... maybe i'm dreaming too much and not thinking enough.

Why would you want a rear that big on that?

Why would you want a rear that big on that?
Exactly!
The modern world is obsessed with phalic symbolism, bigger is better, hell even the word "phat" (which is really only fat) means good these days!
Far better to stay lithe & nimble I say, skinnier things go more places!
BTW LBTW, keep the skinny(er) tyres on that tard of yours don't be tempted to go for fat rims, only slows things down if you ask me.

It's definitely a cool looking machine. I'd love to have one as a commuter.
Maybe breathe the engine a little and hotten the camshaft to give some go down the Southern Motorway in the mornings :2thumbsup
Makes the FXR-150 look a little old (I used to think they were the bees knees in small bike styling).
No offence FXR owners.

i was thinking more in terms of lightweight rims for the R6

yeh but they are kinda ugly, and are due for an update. I think they will probably be getting an update very soon now that Yamaha is in the market... perhaps hope for something from Kawasaki or even Suzuki aswell?

I don't want more grip, how the hell can I learn to back it in if I have more grip? I think I might rig up a water squirter or something to reduce traction on demand.

:Offtopic:
Its actually about having lots of grip or more correctly having predictable traction at the point when the thing slides. When I was in Europe a few years ago the super moto guys where telling me they use a 5.5" rear rim shod with a 160 width tyre, run of the side of the tread in a predictable fashion hence the backing in with the pegs on the deck.

Yeah it looks pretty nice... I keep looking at those fairing though, that'd be a very expensive learner bike. I'd say a few 'naked' ones would turn up on Trademe shortly after it's release.

I like alot. would be a nice looking town commuter. also after the first bin, make it into a bucket racer.
Also about price...
wouldnt it be slightly 'high' to run along the lines of yamaha bikes in general. The r6 r1 etc are generally always priced above their rivals. Brand perception and positioning in the market?

Very nice.
It's a shame that UK licensing laws get in the way of them making it a 250cc.

Hmm... i did think that BUT, the Scorpio is far better bike than the GN250 in terms of ridability and quality of build.. yet they are selling for around $3995, only $300 more than a GN and has only been around for 6 years or so... not 20 like the GN.
It would be my thinking that the R125 will be about $5-6k... probably in a similar market to the likes of the Hyosung GT250, just with a bit less power.

very nice looking wee bike, get em hooked on that when they're on their learners and they'll be on the latest R6/R1 when they hit full!

If this article is reliable at all they're estimating 4000 pounds

Sounds a bit pricey, when over there you can get a:

Hyosung GT125R for 2950 pounds or GT250R for 3050 pounds link (http://www.hyosung.co.uk/range.php)
Despite it looking really nice, I can't see it having a big impact on our shores

...or keep with the works of it's bigger brothers...
ie half an FZR250 - being 125 twin with 20-25hp @15,000rpm.
Now THAT would be awesome.

Sorry to correct you but fastest 250 4stroke. your forgeting about the RGV's, NSR's, KR-1's and RS250's which all of would whip the pants of the FZR.:woohoo:

Well, Yamaha have hit back at Honda's CBR-125R with a little entry level sports bike of their own. It'll be the new YZF-R125.
You can read about it HERE (http:////www.yamaha-motor-europe.com/products/motorcycles/supersport/yzf-r125.jsp)
Let's see if they get their own race series up and running too.
{Can the mods please mearge this with the other thread. Did a search for yzf-r125 and got only the r1 -TIA}
