View Full Version : Wellington: The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride 2007/08
Nasty
14th September 2007, 13:26
The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride.
Yes folks it's on again this Wednesday - Weather permitting.
Departing 6:30 at the southern end of Avalon park by the duck/elephant pond.
(Turn off the Hutt motorway and onto the Kennedy Good bridge, the carpark is 100metres past the end of the bridge, on your left hand side)
Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...UTF8&z=16&om=0
First ride for the season: Wednesday 13th September, 2006.
Please Note: This ride is arranged in order to provide a local social riding event for the local KB riders that are riding the smaller CC bikes and that generally prefer slower paced rides.
This event works well by having the group remain as a group when in transit and by travelling at predominantly road legal speeds.
All KB riders and friends are welcome to attend this ride. However, should you struggle to maintain the groups easy going pace, we ask that you be considerate and stick with it for this is a learner/introductory riders group event.
These rides generally consist of a group ride with a purpose - A pitstop at a pub! Pub destinations previously ranged from Featherston, Wellington city, Karori, Trentham, Paremata and Paekakariki.
All first timers are welcome. So feel free to tag along for an enjoyable social event.
Destination will be determined by the group on the day.
If the weather looks dodgey on any given Wednesday, tune in to the site for the group decision of do or die. See you there!

Well I hope to be a starter on this, and hopefully its heading north so I can just wait at the front gate for you guys and gals to come by. It will be the first leg on the big road trip to Auckland, so the Duczilla will be loaded up with the new touring luggage I bought the other day. Will push on to Palmy afterwards though.

Well Trudes, on this special day I'd think you'd make an effort to do something a bit special and with a bit of class. Something like taking him out with KBers to a pub for a shandy and wedges. Simply everyone goes to Logan Brown darlink but they can't go where we go in style at all.

Seven bikes tonight -- and oh what a cracking evening it was to be out on a motorcycle: No wind, warm, stars, half a moon and a flock of sheep. The Secret Seven rode the Wainui coast road and returned to the pleasant hostelry that is the Fireman's Arms in Petone. Good company, great food and a doddery old fart with Tourettes Syndrome (who wasn't a motorcyclist). If he's there next time we'll get him his own KB logon. He agrees that the fucken fuckers have fucked it and the fucken place has gone to the fucken dogs. And he has some interesting theories on other matters of national fucken importance.

I thought he was with you Hitcher .... oh well .. what a great night ... well designed ride for night riding ... for the night blind it was challenging .. but hey if nothing else I also tried riding my touch ... to get to the top of wainui hill and look out across the hutt and wellington always takes my breath away ... just amazing ... as Hitcher said .. good food, good company and a great rumbling of fuck this in the background .... great evening all now off to bed!

T'was a night to remember indeed. Out on the south coast it was so still and quiet. We found a new venue too ... most excellent food and the entertainment was like nothing you'd find anywhere else. Hitcher, Buckbuck, Ocean1, Nasty, Grub, KarmakillerNZ and Weaver was a great group and I was so impressed with the two L-platers (Hyosung mounted) who had all the right and expensive gear. Way to go guys.

Yep, it was a great night alright. The Wainui coast was beautiful tonight - eerily quiet and still. Stayed for a short while and watched the planes come and go. Great choice for a destination.
It was also my first time out on the bike at night so it was a whole new experience... very exciting! It's a whole different ballgame at night. I'm looking forward to more like it.
And thanks to Nasty and Grub for escorting me half way home. :niceone:

The BDOTGNZA has boycotted Divine Pizza because of their sloppy use of English grammar, particularly their desire to wrongly put an apostrophe in pizzas. If they're that sloppy with their communications, what sloppiness do they tolerate in their kitchen? The Brave Defenders are loathe to find out...

An enjoyable ride and good to catch up with Hawkeye and chat at the Waterfront Cafe and Bar.
I think it is important to reiterate the observations made tonight:
1. Following distances, and
2. Staggered formation.
Both these topics go hand in glove when on a group ride.

Six of us 'ducked the wind' and went up Blue Mountains Road, through Whitemans Valley out to Te Marua, then back, over Mangaroa Hill and Wallaceville Hill, down the back of Trentham through Silverstream, and into Stokes Valley to the Hardware Cafe and Bar.
On the way into Stokes Valley I lead the way over Holborn Drive and at the bar, I remarked about the Saturday morning riding practice for those interested. Holborn Drive I ride quite frequently, it is good for counter steering practice.

Any room on this ride for a newbie? Will everyone be going fast?
:D
No one should be going fast on this ride.
The fast ones or those who think/know/want to be fast should go first so they aren't pushing or passing newbies or me. I prefer to ride slower than normal while in this group ride and don't like being in a situation (especially on the hill) where I don't know if that rider behind me is happy to follow at this pace, is feeling uncomfortable trying to keep up or wants to pass. Care also needs to made in the decision to pass cages on the hill; unless the vehicle is really slow it is best not to pass as this puts pressure on lesser skilled riders to take risks to keep up. A slower than usual pace for TCWNR suits me fine.
We should discuss this before departure and make for an enjoyable ride.

Hi Lissa, Sorry I didn't get over the hill tonight. Went to the top of the hill but had to head back. Didn't have the time available to come all of the way over. :weep: (had to come home to see to the puppy). Next time...

Best turn out Ive seen so far. 24 bikes I think, with half staying in stokes valley and half heading over the hill.
A couple of hairy moments coming back, just over the summit on the first piece of straight wind hit me like a truck...kept it upright though so lived to fight another day.
And the best news for me was my bike didnt play up at all...unlike in the weekend...

That was a superb trip and I'm surprised at how pleasant and accommodating the Tin Hut is now!
Good to see everyone and meet some new people. Lucky old AJturbo got to meet everyone for the first time for the third time! The man's a goldfish!
Especially nice to see DMTD there on his 14. Looks very nice in black. The bike looked quite good in black too.

So True, I think I have meet him about 5 times now, still asks who I am... hmm maybe its just an old age thing. Or I am unforgettable... yea that would be it.
I was surprised it wasnt as windy as I thought it would be, although I never actually went up the hill. Elle wants us to go to her pizza place more in the summer, less wind and more sun. :sunny:
Good night, hopefully I can make the next one, and meet some new peoples.

Yeah it was definitely a good ride. I always thought the "tin hut" was a bit of a rough and tumble place:laugh:,I wasn't expecting a huge wine list written on the wall.
It was an intersting trip coming back over the hill. That wind was really bad near the top.
I tried to drag Ocean1 off at the lights. I'm sure he was short shifting and still making me look like a twat, lying flat on the tank giving it full noise:laugh:

Well, given that I'd stalled the feckin thing twice tonight you stood a reasonable chance dude.

I on the other hand, had already notice last Saturday that you have eyeballs. You just weren't using them at the time.

Five of us left the Duckpond and rode to Stokes Valley spending 50 minutes non-stop doing some slow bike control routines that included rides u-turns and figure eight turning. Then it was across to Silverstream and up Blue Mountains Road and out passing The Short Straw Cafe to the end of that part of the valley where an emergency braking routine was done.
We returned back down to Silverstream and stopped at the local bar opposite the railway station for refreshment.
Had the weather been more favourable I would have travelled over to Carterton tonight, be that as it may, the evenings ride was enjoyable and those attending commented that it was good to spend some time doing some of the slow control routines. The ride duration in both Stokes Valley and Whitemans Valley was 90 minutes.
I arrived back home in Stokes Valley at 8.35pm
Heads Up and Enjoy

Was a great ride last night.. a few delays along the way, like assisting RWH trying to get his lil pinki into his new gloves I did suggest cutting it off but that didn't go down to well. Then at the botom of the hill a familiar hicup started... running out of gas .... Where the .. is the reserve! ...
I was happy to see that the Tin Hut still has the olives on the counter. Great turn out

What wind? The merest zephyr dude, it’s only a problem when you run out of lean angle on the straight bits…
Nice to meet you too. Good to hear about the KTM, was definitely on my list a couple of months ago, maybe next time. And fer fuck’s sake get that 14 sorted, thought some bastard was taking pot shots at me.

Mate I had a Mk111 Zephyr in the late '80s and it was nowhere near as brisk as that

Ah, think I see your problem. That 14's not a ford see mate, not supposed to have a 460 quadrajet carb and a 10" coby muffler. The chromed grease nipples and fluffy dice are fine however.
