What sort of dyno are you getting it done on ? I understand that to get the true hp you need to get it done on a Brake Dyno, Inertia dynos add stuff to the figures. Don't think there are many brake dynos in NZ.

Is that some sort of punjab gizmoIt's a crude tuning device (in comparison to a PCIII) that adjust large areas of the map at once, and is used by Suzuki dealers and some tuners to somewhat fix the emissions restrictions in the factory map. Compared to a PCIII they have little precision, but they're quite cheap to buy (less than two PCIIIs), and even cheaper to tune (cause there's fuck all adjustment in them) bikes with. Had them use one on my bike to correct the off idle stumble due to ghey hole in the map due to emissions regulations... it might be crude, but if you're not fussy, it'll do the job alright.

well actually...what you have said is semi true but not really...its has the ability to tune throttle opening alot better than a PC with more precision infact!!!...but not as good a cross section on rpm...it can add and take more fuel away than a PC...PC also can cause ignition scatter when use to adjust the ignition curve as well...which in effect lenghens the ignition pulse...which looses the precisness... ultimatly...and yoshi,YEC,kawasaki race,HRC kit type ecu replacments are the best...and are used on all the top bikes!

It'll be interesting to see the comparison between 2 totally different approaches to going as fast as ferkin' possible: a relatively understressed virtually stock big bore vs a smaller capacity with it's scrotum strung tighter than a banjo string. For those of us with over active sphincter muscles (mere mortals) I wonder which would be easier to ride quick.....
I reckon the before and after curves are more interesting than the almost random number's various dyno's come up with....but then curves are much harder to describe down at the pub, eh? It shits me that there is such a variance between different dyno's...it seriously cannot be that hard to calibrate them to a known standard.
I'm a bit disturbed/intrigued that Robert Taylor reckon's he can help to get Boomer "hooked up"....I didn't think he ran that sort of business....

They will be tuned with the tekka choona, so no need for a pcIII Comparing the outputs from different types of dyno is always going to throw up odd results. They are just a measuring stick, and to get sensible results you have use the same dyno- not just the same type, but the same dyno. Ill take the rap for substanially helping to divert off topic. Perhaps I was trying to show a light side in contrast to the serious business of dealing with suspenders day in day out. I think light hearted humour is a very good form of medicine and its a shame there are too many people in all walks of life who are devoid of it.
Look at Michael Cullen, I hate the man with a vengeance but he does have a wicked sense of humour, as did other dictators like Muldoon and Lange.
I promise that humour will now be constrained within topic, that is fair I guess.

Why does it matter, why does a conversation have to be so on-topic perfect? It doesn't happen when we meet riding our bikes or at the pub, why do you think it has to be so perfect here?
As a 4.5 year veteran member I found this thread quite OK. Why can't the mods just back off, enjoy the fun and post interesting stuff themselves instead of messing with other people's stuff or don't you have anything else to do?

No I didnt like Arthurs comb over ! I wont hold it against you, this has been fun. I even have some friends that are socialists. Heck, the shocks I import come from one of the most socialist countries in the world ( shame ).
Japanese horsepower is in DIN ( smaller units, bigger numbers ) Measured at the crank and / or the glossy pamphlet. Good for the pub. Dynos are different, there are so many variables. A comparator at best, as long as you are using the same one under the same conditions and are very pedantic about technique to not fool yourself ( and everybody else ) to achieve TRUE repeatability.
I still have a Dynojet dyno but am ''over'' it. I now much much prefer my suspension dyno, its a lot quieter!

At the end of a tiny, deserted outback bar is a huge Aboriginal bloke, two metres tall and 150 kilos.
He's having a few beers when a short, well-dressed and obviously homosexual man walks in and sits beside him.
After three or four beers the gay guy finally plucks up the courage to say something to the big Aboriginal.
Leaning over towards the Aboriginal he whispers, "Do you want a blow-job?" At this the massive Aboriginal leaps up with fire in his eyes and smacks the man in the face, knocking him off his stool.
He proceeds to beat him all the way out of the bar before leaving him bruised and battered in the car park, then returned to his seat at the bar.
Amazed, the barman quickly brings over another beer. "I've never seen you react like that",he says. "Just what did he say to you?".
"I'm not sure", the aboriginal replies, "Something about a job..."

OK, so riddle me this (purely for Mr Hitcher's benefit).
In 1948, near 60 years ago, before any of you were born, Vincent produced a cast iron naked bike with 70bhp at the crank (claimed). That 70bhp was sufficient to propell the bike (remember, cast iron, pushrods, 70 octane petrol, naked) to 150mph+ . Around 240kph . (In their usual fashion, the Christchurch crew went over the top and pushed one to 185mph) .
Now if Suzuki have something like 160hp at the rear wheel, say 180 odd at the crank, that's 2.5 times (roughly) the horsepower. For an extra, what, 40kph? The fairing alone should add that.
So I reckon Mr Suzuki's figures are kitten power, not horse power. Otherwise a GSXR1000 should be topping out WEAY north of 300pkh.

Compared to my expectations. Which may of course have been unrealistic. I am coming to expect that they probably were. But it does not seem so much extra over say a RZ350, for all the extra years, extra technology and claimed extra horsepower. Granted also that I am only judging on the basis of about 80kph upward, since I did not have the experience of the machine to optimise the balance between keeping the front wheel down on take off , and the rear wheel tractioned. So I am talking sensory perception, not figures. But acceleration upward from 200kph was not what I had expected.

ahhh yes...the way modern bikes disguse there speed...much the same perception I had with my first ride on the current k6-k7 750 compared to my stock standard k5 one...I would have sworn black and blue my one was a fair bit quicker in a straight line...but truth be known...it was a much better power delivery...disgusing the rush of power quite remarkably well!!!

16th September 2007, 23:15
You make a good point there 'poos.
It's not the top speed. I'm sure that Suzuki could make the gixxer do 350 if they wanted.
Sure the Vincent could do 240, but it would take it half the day to get there. I have the original road test from The Motor Cycle, August 11th 1949 at home here and it quite clearly states.
Mean Max Speed:
Bottom: 69mph
Second: 87mph
Third: 110mph
Fourth: not obtained. Why? They couldn't find a long enough runway...
but bear in mind the Vincent did the quarter mile in 14.2 seconds.
The gixxer would probably do it in 9 flat. And in 14.2 seconds I dare say it would do half a mile and be up around 160mph, compared to the 96mph the Vincent could achieve.
You see - top speed ain't everything. And pushrods - hell, plenty of high performance V8s running pushrods still.
Ixion
16th September 2007, 23:28
But, unless one is racing the things, is not the perception what matters.
After all, as far as pure speed is concerned, I have done 600kph. In a Boeing 747, totally and utterly boring. I suspect that the acceleration of a 747 is probably faster than a GSXR also, and also totally boring.
So, is that the ultimate evolution of motorcycles? 350kph (or whatever) of complete boredom?
Take a fast two stroke for comparison . The slingshot effect as it hits power band and catapults forward FEELS far faster than the GSXR. And personally I ride a bike for the sensory input it gives me , not for the sake of some figures on a timing device . A sprotsbike that FEELS slow may as well BE slow (things are a bit different for tourers - I think that is one of the distinctions between the genera) .
If a bike feels slow and uninteresting (and I do not want to race it), then what is the point of all that horsepower? Regardless of what the timer or speedometer may say. A boring 250kph is just boring- like that Boeing.
riffer
16th September 2007, 23:32
Hmmm.
I've ridden a K7 gixxer thou, and I've ridden an RG500.
Both were fast.
At full throttle in 2nd gear, the gixxer was faster. And felt faster.
Are you sure you didn't accidentally set it in "C" mode?
However, the RG500 was more "exciting" to ride. And more dangerous. As I'm sure the H2 was. And the Vincent.
I'm thinking this may be the intangible essence you are trying to describe.
Meh. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

You of all people should know that HP has to increase in huge amounts to make any real difference to top speeds. Add in things like the massive frontal area of a GSXR 1000's radiator...and the fact that the fairings on said bike are quite useless as far as top speeds go...and your argument is as week as piss.
I have ridden one. I was underwhelmed. Better than the SV1000 is all I can say.
If you've ridden a GSXR1000, and can say you were underwelmed, then I can say with 100% confidence two things.

Yeah. I rest my case. Gear an RZ350 for 300kph, then get back to me about it's acceleration. Or, gear a GSXR1000 for 200kph and twist the grip. Get what I'm saying? Anyone that'd dare try and compare an RZ350 to a GSXR 1000 is delusional.

Come and see me at Wellington Motorcycles (hell, I'll shout you the air fare), I'll give you a GSXR1000...you can then give me a demo alongside the runway at Wellington Airport against a 737 (much faster on take off than a 747). You come back and not have a hint of hand shake...I'll lick your balls. The slightest hint of tremor...you know the routine.

And pushrods - hell, plenty of high performance V8s running pushrods still.
a 14.2 in the year 1949? pretty blimin quick
mind you 8 years later out came the shelby version of the mustang (gt 500) and that was quickkkkk

Id rather have a lot less horsepower but with a bike that rides bumps superbly, handles superbly, carves precise lines and is kind to its tyres. And is quiet. Pop off valves annoy me intensely, so do the most offensive bike exhausts.

However the 737 ground roll at wellington is only the early part of its acceleration phase, sort of like turning your bike out of your driveway in first gear (if we must compare). Shortly after takeoff it will have achieved a speed of 300 Knots (480KPH) well before it passes island bay. It will continue to accelerate right through to 840 KPH and will be in Auckland 47 mins later. Or it could be sitting in Sydney by the time any wellington motorcycle had passed through Taihape. Dumb comparison really.

Oh dear. I see that I was wrong. You have not made so much progress on your journey to enlightenment as I had thought. I am so sorry, my friend
Some people claim that a vegetable diet does wonders for the relief of splenetic and choleric humours. Never tried it m'self, being more of the Vimes school of dietary science, but perhaps you might find it worth a trial ? One does not like to see a brother so tormented.
Thank you for the information about the relative acceleration fo the aeroplanes. I will try to remember it, but I fear that I find such things very boring, and will no doubt soon forget it. I am glad though that you have an interest in life, and aeroplanes are so much more today than trains.
By the way, it occurs to me that Mr JRandom (Ms Fish as was, is it not wonderful how the clever surgeons can reverse such things) might like you for a pet. (S)he has a fondness for such things. If there should be an opening, would you be interested?

Id rather have a lot less horsepower but with a bike that rides bumps superbly, handles superbly, carves precise lines and is kind to its tyres
I think you are both on the track of what I am grasping for. But it is not related to danger. I know that for some people, danger is part of the attraction of motorcycling , but I have never been of that persuasion. Or, of that which derives a "buzz" from speed pure and simple. What I most look for in a bike is FUN. And I coming to the conclusion that over about 100hp there is a sort of diminishing return of fun for extra horsepower.
The GSXR is fast, most certainly. And fun, too. But let us compare it with , say, an RG150, to keep things modern on both sides.
Let us take an experienced rider and send him out on a loop of your favourite twistified road, first on an RG150 and then on a GSXR1000. I specify experienced, both because a novice will not be in a position to manage either bike properly, and because an experienced rider may be expected to have gotten over the "OMGWTFLOL I did 200 kph look at me" syndrome
Now when the rider returns from his loop on the RG, I am sure he will have a grin on his face and agree that he had fun (if not, he's not doing it right). And when he returns from the loop on the GSXR, likewise. And maybe the GSXR will be a bigger grin, and more fun. But -- the GSXR has about six times the horsepower of the RG. Will our rider think it was six times as much fun. I'm far from convinced.
Of course, if I had to ride from Auckland to Wellington, I'd take the GSXR not the RG. I'm just pointing out that at a certain point the extra amount of sheer fun to be obtained starts to lag behind the increase in horsepower. Lots more horses, only a little more fun.

Yeah I think so too. Silly boy Ixion! However, as clever as you pilots are (I know this first hand, as a mate of mine flys 737's too), you obviously haven't been round bikes as long as I have been. It was in actual fact an advertising wank from KHI when the H2 was released stating it was faster than a 747 down the runway. Not my comparison. So email them and tell them it was dumb.

Hmmm. I had an RZ350. Then I got a VFR700- had them at the same time for a month or two, it wasn't easy to tell, but I think the VFR accelerated a bit harder. The RZ made loads of noise and vibrated away, making it feel loads faster than it was. Then I got an FZR1000, I had the FZR and VFR at the same time. The FZR made the VFR feel like a kids toy. I'd hop on the VFR and wind it out wondering when it was actually going to do something. Then I got the Monster 750, and had the FZR for a while as well. I got used to the Monster, and after a while it felt quite powerful... then I hopped on the FZR and blasted up onto the motorway...it was almost scary. For a while the Monster felt like a toy. Now that the FZR is long gone, the Monster feels powerful again.
When I had the FZR, a mate gave me a go on his GSXR1000K4. Compared to the FZR, IT was almost scary. I couldn't give it full noise till I got into 3rd, as the front would lift and keep on going up in first and second.
So to recap- The FZR1000 made the VFR700 (and RZ350 by association) feel like a toy. The GSXR1000K4 made the FZR1000 feel big, heavy and slow.
Ixion, all you have really said is that the sensation of speed is relative! At 800kmh in a 747, you are sitting in air conditioned comfort, with nothing to guage your speed by. On a bike at 250kmh, you are in the air, the force of it rushing past is straining your neck muscles, its roaring in your ears, the engine is howling, and the scenery is racing past. Yet you could probably feel the same sensation of speed at 40kmh bouncing around a grass track on a kids gokart.

I have lived under 3 woman priministers, the outgoing one bloody awful, one quite okay, but the first one sensational. Margaret Thatcher. Just ask General Galtieri ( from his grave )
Because many women have very very good attention for detail I am sure they would also make great suspension engineers.

a-hem. It's very very quick from about 10,000 onwards. It was slightly disconcerting how the front rises under full throttle at speeds very close to twice the speed limit. But it didn't stop me trying it a few times to check that it wasn't a fluke.
I'd love to hear from Jimmy how much of a difference the suspension work on his race bike altered it from the original.
How quickly do you think you get used to the way they accelerate? I thought the RF was fast the first time I rode it (after my last bike - an unrestricted FZR750R) but now I have no problems applying maximum throttle in most conditions. I guess it took about 3 months of daily riding before I had no fear (but still respect) of the 118-approx RWHP in the RF.
To be honest I found the GSXR1000K7 at full throttle a little intimidating - not scary - but definitely something worthy of respect.
How long before it gets ho-hum?

I reckon it'll be close to 170+hp with a pipe, maybe 171.4hp.
Most magazines are dynoing at high 160's stock, and a few showing 170+ with fancy pipes (Superbike magazine have one with a LeoVince pipe showing 170+).
K5/6's are getting 155-160ish stock and upto 165+ with pipe/PC (or Teka).
All depends on the dyno though.....

Although saying that the kind man has told me to take her back for more if it is indeed twitchy
i'm on the naughty chair so i cant post pics :(
The dynos with and without baffles. With the baffle shes a good 5hp short upto 5,500. theres no dip at 5,000 .smooth... then there's about 1 maybe 2 hp's loss upto 10,000. after that shes a good 5bhp short of the no baffle line
Without the baffle the curve drops at 5 and not so steep until 6 then straight up! to 10 (the curves inline with the baffle, only 1 or 2 hp more) Its here you see the 5 or so hp increase over the baffle and she starts the decline at 12,000.
the torque curve however is weeeealy strange upto 4,000 up, over to 5,000 down to 6,000 up and over to 10... where she peaks inb the low 70's
sorry for a shitty explanation.. i'll take a pic and get someone to post soon.,..

But it's all good. You just feel free to run in and defend ya buddy Ixion when he makes statements like a K7 GSXR 1000 is underwhelming. You must be better men than Revvin Kevin, as even he finds them too much (on a race track no less).
Well by all accounts the K7 is underwhelming, its got a lot of power but delivers it so well it feels slightly bland compared to a K5/6.
My K5 felt soft next to my K1, only cause the K1 had such a big midrange hit in comparison. Im quicker on the K5 though, and once you know where the power lies, you can still hoist the big mingers!

Oh FFS!
Anyone who says the K7 is underwhelming never bothered to pull the throttle back far enough!!!
They simply made the bike easier to control.
Besides, if you really hate the power delivery you can get it sorted.
Change is a good thing people. And IMHO Suzuki did the right thing in making the bike easier for the average rider to handle while still ensuring hardcore riders could get their jollies.
If it ain't fast enough for you turbo the sucker. :angry2:

My point exactly....it feels slower but obviously it isn't.
A lot of reviews are criticsizing the K7 though for its slowness of turning, it feels less willing to steer as well as the previous model.
For me, I'll stick with my K5 for now, I think its still ugly, but less so than a K7 :)

Shit mate, I ride an RF900R. The gixxer felt fine to me.
As for sticking with a K5, you could do a hell of a lot worse. :niceone:

it did turn in slow with all that weight on it.. handling has improved dramatically post surgery; Enigma took it for a spin before and after pipe and said it was a different bike all together; he didn't like the bike at all stock; i lent it him again afterwards.. he wanted to buy one.

There should be an unwritten rule that any member than owns an RF900R should not be able to achieve the status of moderator. That's just criminal.

I'll have the rack, and even the standard pipes back on it in three weeks time for the GC, then back to normal. GAY BUT PROUD!!! LOL

Wanna take a shot at guessing the hp at the wheel of a k7, stock except for the slip-on racefit growler?
Bike's just been dropped of and i'll post the results on monday...
My guess is 146
Ok after fifteen pages of rhetoric. What your honest opinion does it go beter ? The figure is not important unless you want to measure all the competition with the same dyno .
