The Capital 1000K Cruise
Saturday 03 November

Departs: 0700 am, Caltex Rimutaka, Upper Hutt.
Meet before for briefing etc.

This is an informal ride for those North Islanders that would like to do the Southern 1000km Longest Day Endurance Ride, but can’t afford to pay The Ferryman.

Route is 1,044kms via:
Rimutakas – Masterton – Pongaroa – Wimbledon – Waipukarau (259K)
Napier - SH 5 - Taupo (205K)
Poihipi Rd – Western Arm – SH41 – Taumaranui (130K)
National Park – Raetihi – Wanganui – Fordell – Hunterville (231K)
Cheltenham – Ashhurst – Aokautere – Mangamaire – Rimutakas – Rimutex (219K)
And carry on to Rimutaka Tavern, (nextdoor) to trade tales, get certs and win spot prizes.

There will be Certificates for completing the ride and Spot Prizes - compliments of NAC Insurance.

Depending on numbers, we may ride as a group or stagger the start.
As an informal ride, you and your bike are your responsibility to ensure both are capable of completing the course. There is no recovery vehicle organised.
A register of riders will be kept to ensure everyone returns.
It is not a race and should be easily doable at a sedate pace with stops…enjoy the ride.

The ride will go ahead rain, hail or shine….pending the Wed/Thurs weather forecast.

Register for the Ride: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1392&day=2007-11-3

Could be a goer too. Did Alfredton to Pongaroa yesterday - roads not in too bad a nick except where storm damage still not repaired. Paraparas were ok last weekend too.

You should be able to manage a rolling average of 85kmh (even on the roads chosen) and be back at the pub in about 12 hours even, if you don't fanny around during the stops. It's only a long day ride.

Sounds like a great idea!

One quick warning tho, the guy at Pongaroa petrol station is not always open on weekends and only has 91.
For most bikes its not a problem because that whole leg without that stop is only 259km but we had a shitty experiance with my mates honda X4 (1300) that has to be babied to do 120km on a tank!

A Small extra gas comtainer could be a good idea for those of you with gas guzzlers out there...

Go the GSX250 with its 400km range!

Hmmm, I hope you're right. I've just spoken to one of the guys here at work who has done the Grand Challenge (4 times now. He says that their average last year was 80kmh and to do that their cruising speeds were 120-140. But those figures don't sound right either.

My reserve comes on around 200km, so I might buy a bottle of octane booster and bring that along... (They sell that in New Zealand, right?)

Just noticed you said not open on weekends... Maybe will see how far I can get it to go...:devil2:

koba

Can get it but its 15 bucks a bottle and im sure its just toluene that you can get much cheaper without the fancy package.

Im sure it wont add faff all to the range of your bike anyway.

The guy may or may not be open on weekends, just depends on your luck and if he has somthing to do. If he is closed but still home he will prob open up if someone is in need but if hes gone away for the weekend you will be fucked if you dont have extra gas.

maybe someone in the area can find his number in the phone book and ring and see if he is gonna be home?

I managed to average 78.5kph on the Intruder last year. That included my 11 fuel stops, wrong turns and extra k's, stopping to check road signs to ensure I was on the right goat track and frequently pootling to the conditions at 80 - 100kph. Sometimes getting up to 120 and very occasionally 130. I recently averaged 94.2kph Welly - Rotorua via Wairarapa, Napier, Gisborne, Waioeka Gorge and most of that was at around 110. (500ks on a tank helps the average though)

I wouldn't even consider the possibility of gas at Pongaroa!! Masterton - Waipuk' is only 194.5kms. Carry 5ltrs if you want to play it safe...or go slower.

80k average is what we budget on for GC & Southern X and usually achieve slightly higher without having to be silly. You just have to keep at it and not stuff around stopping all the time or for long periods. Good range definitely helps.

Who gives a shit, its not an easy clear cut way to make money like speeding tickets so cops probably won't care.
Aslong as it is safe and sensible (i.e. not in a coke bottle down your jacket!) I'm sure it should all be sweet.
Would really be a good idea to bring some aye, my bike VFR400 wont make masterton to waipuk on one tank in its current (not the best..) state.

Sweet, would be MUCH appreciated! When I had my bike in the states the first and last time I ran out I was able to coast 50m to a petrol station... Doesn't sound like that's an option in this case... Hoping I can keep up AND do 260+/-km a tank though...

That is where the gps comes in handy. I have already worked out that if we drop all the stops bar the fuel stops we can actually drop the moving speed by 20km/hr and still do the ride 20km/hr faster.

That is what this weekend ride is all about which everyone is borking at. Just a nonstop criuse at <130km/hr. No racing. No 200km/hr stretches. Just staying on the bike and cruising throughout the day. Already agreed with Meanie to be cruising at 120km/hr and will be keeping an eye on the GPS while stopped to ensure an average speed of over 80km/hr. The last rides average was 61km/hr.

Aye, that's why the STs do so well on the long rides. I've had 520 Kms on a non-stop tank taking it easy. Not sure how much further it would have gone but I might have got 550.

Took a bit of a ride down Highway 52 today to have a look at the road. I came through from the Weber end but turned off at Pa Valley Road to take me home so I rode about 50km of it.

Weber end was a bit slippery in the wet but not too bad. As most people will know the whole road has a lot of repairs on it and in places these are broken up a bit and gravel & crap over the road is pretty common.

The piccy's below show probably the worse bit although we'll be going the right way to miss most of it. It's about 10km south of Pongaroa and you'll come around that left hander that the bike's parked on before htting the right hander where the opposite side of the road is all gravel with some of it sprinkled all over the left hand side too.

No major dramas, just remember it's a back country road. I did come across a huge tractor taking up all the road and there was even a coach bus at one stage. Stock count: at least 3 sheep & 1 arthritic hare.

Moving a bit further into the ride the Pahiatua Track is in good condition and the road through Mangamire is ok too although still road works (not much to worry about) at Mangamire itself.

Looking forward to the ride - hope the weather is as good as it was today. :niceone:

I went for a wee 300k ride today just to get some saddle time. My poor old bike has been parked up for quite a few weeks now due to bloody work commitments.
Getting new tyres and chain and sprockets fitted this week so another wee scrub in the tyres run probably on Thursday and I will be ready to go.
Having never ridden this sort of distance its going to be a great challenge for me. The longest distance I have done in one stretch is around 750 km so it will be great to see the 1000 click over

Please note that at this stage we don't have 30+ riders and I expect we may get about 20 so I wouldn't rely on having a recovery vehicle. Having said that, we would try and utilise our KB & Ulysses networks to get assistance to any riders in need.

Looks like we might cop a little rain on the last leg but otherwise it should go round us: http://www.metservice.com/default/index.php?alias=farmrainoutlook ...and after this years GC....what's a little rain.

So far we have 16 registered + 2 confirmed but unregistered (Mr Nerve2) and for the 3 early risers from Palmy...the offer for beds is still available for that extra 1½ hours sleep and good coffee. Flyers were dropped in the Bike shops so there maybe more to come yet. (You need to complete the 1000Km for a certificate...whether you start in Wellington or Elsewhere)

We have 150cc and 250cc bikes registered so there's no excuses for not participating.

Only 3 more sleeps...

Sounds good. I'm thinking I will come down and stay at Mums Friday night which will be nice  Does that still count towards the 1000 Kms?

Came thru Otane on Monday night and there were some road works controlled by traffic lights. Not really a problem but they're there.

Look forward to seeing everyone bright & early in the morning!

Off to bed early right now for an 0530 wake up to be off on the 1000k ride ... can't wait.

The weather looks like it's going to pack it int by the afternoon ... which looks like that will be just as we're entering the Paraparas. Bugger it, the second time down that road this year and it was pissing down last time too!

It's a dangerous piece opf road at the best of times but the trucks have scraped all the metal off the tight corners so now they're just road-wide tar snakes - smooth, shiny and like they're covered in diesel.

I'm ok though, it's not my turn to fall off, I've had them all this year.

Hi all, been back from the ride for a while now. Thanks John for organising everything - particularly the weather & the good route. Excellant day out. As you may have guessed we pulled the plug at Ashhurst (bit of a long day when you start at 5am) - waited there for a while to wave to others going through but only saw a few.

Have mosted my few measely photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/andrew.l.thomson/TheCapital1000KCruise

Hope everyone had a great day and got home no worries.

John and Steve .. what a wonderful day ... extremely well organised ... and a hell of a lot of fun for all the riders ... would have preferred my services to go unused .. but bought the Grubs bike back from Wangas ... was still fantastic to meet the riders and to participate in this great event!

PS thanks to Nudemetalz and Mrs for the loan of the trailer ... :):):)

Mine :innocent:

Well now, all of you who jumped to the conclusion that Grub had fallen off again take two tablespoons of castor oil and self-flagelate for 15 minutes! The bike broke itself - so there!

It all started when Wannabiker stopped at the summit of the Napier-Taupo road ... episode two was when we stopped for gas at Raetehi ... episode three was outside the pub at Upokapockerpong just north of Wanganui and the climax was at the Rimutaka Tavern.

But it's late and I'm way too tired to string sentences together so you'll have to wait until tomorrow for the details ... night night

Thanks John, for organising a great ride with the weather to match. Well organised, and a lot of extra work went into orgainsing certificates, spot prizes and nic naks to give away.

Banditrider and I pulled off at Ashurst. Waited around for awhile and waved a few through.

We arrived at Ashurst just after 5:30pm, 12.5 hours after leaving home. Clocked up 1068km by the time I parked back in the shed.

Looking forward to the next one.

Great ride :-)

Shame I didn't see too many of you on the way round, but my bike just didn't seem to want to remain stationary for too long...

well for 2007.
What a great day it was!
The weather was kind for us all too, until I got the the Takas on the way home.

John, thanks for organising this & I do really hope this becomes an annual event. A well thought out route and lots of challenging roads

Steve, top job logging all the riders in & out and hanging around until everyone made it saftely back. What a way to spend a Saturday evening, hanging around a car park waiting for riders to show up.

Nasty, your a star:yes: for driving 1/2 way around the lower north island with a trailer in tow "just in case"

Sweetp you are a legend! This chick is one hardcore biker. 1000 k's on an FXR150. Awesome!

To all those that took part in this bloody brilliant ride thanks for your company and it was great to catch up along the way and share our stories. This ride will be one that the will be remebered for a long time.
