hey - not sure if i've posted right place or what (i'm technologically ignorant and work hard to stay that way :-P ) Anyway, my vtr is giving me problems - won't start when hot. I've got an expert on board, but we're trying to hunt a real manual for it. Anyone got one i could beg, borrow or photocopy for a couple of days, pretty pretty please?

to the PDF offer - i have broadband and apparently i can download it through my msn??? i'm happybugz@hotmail.com. To the West Harbour offer, that would be great if this doesn't work - can i phone you? It's sooo frustrating going out on a ride and stopping for petrol and not being able to get going again.

Is it trying to turn over when its hot or is the starter motor struggling?

I got a brand new battery and now it's starts like a dream when cold, but won't go when hot. Will just chug over and over but not ignite. Eventually it gets the hint... but after it basically floods and i leave it 15mins or so. If it's left an hour or so to cool enough it'll start perfectly. Have no idea what's going on.

Did you try a new set of plugs? Maybe running rich? Clogged air filter.

i thought about fuel. have played with idle and it makes no diff at all. I usually run high octane fuel and don't know whether to try 91.

I've got one on CD I got from a guy here on KB. If you PM me your Address I'll make a copy and chuck it in the post for you. Its the service manual I think not an owners manual.

I had similar probs with mine....turned out the rectifier wasnt charging the new battery properly, check your earth straps and starter motor connections. PS I have a spare new rectifier you can try in it to at least eliminate the problem or solve it.....( they are damn $$$$ive), if you like. I'd also try the plugs, air filter, and compression test when its cold and again after it is hot whilst its not starting. but then if you have a pro on the job he/she should be doing that already....lol....if you need a hand drop me a pm i have been inside and out and all around my storm.

but if the new battery isn't being charged properly wouldn't that mean i would still have trouble starting it when cold? It starts like a dream when cold. Full choke and first turn and it's humming. Just the opposite when it's hot!!! Will pass on your comments to my expert (hoping to get the bike up to him this weekend). Many thanks.

did you get this sorted? what did it end up being in the end?.....just curious...:)

turns out the side stand switch was faulty and would randomly cut the engine cause it would send the signal that it was down. Who would've thought? Apparently it is one of those "common" faults. Took some sorting though. Thanks for the interest.

Still weird it was only apparent when it was hot if the switch was faulty. Maybe it was ok first time out of the garage and once it had been riden the fault got bad enough to prevent starting.
Simple but thats a tricky one!
