700km on a K6 GSX-R1000 over the weekend (with thanks to Dover).
I am enlightened.
I'm afraid that I am now firmly in the literbike lust camp. Why does anyone bother with a 600?
No, I mean, seriously.
Yes, I know all the usual reasons, but after losing my thou virginity, they seem pale and insubstantial beside the profoundly erotic experience of opening the throttle on 165bhp.
And it's so comfortable! And it handles so well! And... and... gnnghhh...
I'm going to buy one.

You're nearly there Dan.
You've experienced the raw grunt of the litre bikes, the pain and frustration of being thrown off a big bike, next come the OOOOO FUCK! moment... or 6.
Get it, take it to the track and grin like the Cheshire Cat for a month or more. I hear the racing bug's catching though so I hope you have deep pockets

Yes, indeed.
I shall most probably stick with the sen fiddy for a few munfs. Finish rebuilding the head and tweaking it, get a nice paint job on the road fairings before passing it on.
I'm all about the track days, but I'm not sure that I'd have the time or inclination to race.
Heh. Wait until you see the personalised plate I've just had printed...

Why does anyone bother with a 600?Some people like to howl around the redline, pretending they're Rossi or Stoner, or whoever gives them the biggest hard on at the time. Do that on a 1000, treating the road like your personal track, and we've seen the result... you die. Having a 600 lets you do a few more coro loops before you become one with your bike ;)
The track is their natural home... on there, I would somewhat agree with you.

Yup they sure are alluring. I recently rode back from Coro on a K7 Gixxer thou. I did like it a lot and was left in awe of its power to weight ratio. However it also reminded me of the things that had jaded me fairly rapidly about my old Hayabusa. Once I had gotten over the whoopee of so much grunt and I found myself using all of it in fairly short time, that was it. Though the Busa with its bulk could tour OK.The thou really is rather specialized and mainly suited to relatively smooth tarmac and going fast on it. If that is all that anyone wants out of a bike, then it is perfect.
Interestingly enough and to the surprise to my Gixxer friend and others on sport bikes, my Italian traillie though not as sporty looking, both before and after my friend and I had swapped bikes was easier and quicker through the twisties. Which is where I believe the real measure of rider and manufacturer skills count.

Some people like to howl around the redline...
Hmm. To be honest, what I enjoyed most was the effortless midrange power, and not having to go near the redline. Just being able to comfortably ooze along with one-third throttle at whatever speed seemed appropriate, with no perception that the bike was straining itself, was magic.
I make no pretensions to being a 'fast' rider. I enjoy corners best when zero arse-puckering is involved.
Maybe, in due course, I would grow bored and start riding outside safe limits, but I like to think I'm sensible enough, or at least imaginative enough when it comes to smashed bones and internal organs smeared across the highway, to know what those limits are.
I guess we all eventually find out whether that's the case.
The track is their natural home...

I've still got a licence...
Er, yes. Yes, that subject is something that concerns me. To be honest, as you would expect, I spent a large portion of the weekend travelling at speeds that the constabulary would probably not have smiled upon. A combination of luck, careful selection of location and timing, and a lead rider with a radar detector, however, kept my halo bright and shiny.
I even got a cheery wave and thumbs up from a gentleman riding the other way on a Highway Patrol BMW just north of Rotovegas on Sunday. It was all good.
I would not, however, expect that luck to hold forever.
Was that you I saw northbound on SH2 on the red 600SS, Sunday evening?

And I'll stick with my 1450cc "25KW Model" with it's awesome 5,500rpm red line and excess weight plodder.
But a fang on something grunty and nimble IS great for putting a smile on your face - and making your hands sweaty too.

Thats a good point though I sort of see the loss of licence as being the least of my worries when letting rip on a 150+ HP sport bike. Especially when it comes to my littlies. As Random says, it is all about discipline and I freely admit, and I shocked myself too, that I wasn't as disciplined on a Hayabusa as I would have liked to have professed.

Inflexible, but no longer painful. It gets to stay rigid, bent at about 30°, until sometime next year, when further surgery will be required to free the upper tendon from the scar tissue.
