View Full Version : Which SMC club members have and haven't crashed?

Not to be morbid or tempt fate, but non-motorcyclist are always going on about how dangerous bikes are, so let's do an unofficial club count:

How many of our members have and haven't crashed before? If you did have a crash, describe the damage to you and your bike.

I'll start:

I'm happy to say that in 2-3 years of road riding the worst that's ever happened to me was dropping my bike on a muddy driveway at about 5kph. Just scratched the fairings, bent my indicator stalk and snapped the rear brake lever. Covered the scratch with a sticker, bent the stalk back by hand and bought a new lever.

Update: 4 December 2007

After posting this thread nearly three months ago at least 6 of our members have reported accidents either from their own fault or others in this time. Whilst not every member replied, it would appear that the vast majority of our riders have in fact binned at some stage.

Surprisingly, no serious injuries were reported in the any of the recent accidents apart from bashed up bikes.

5 Dec:

This was pointed out to me in another thread:

http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/research/toll.html

38 motorcycle deaths this year!

Any crash on or off road?

6 i think...

I've fallen off bicycles many more times than i have motorbikes. And when I drive cars people seem to start crashing into me
That would make bicycles more dangerous than motorbikes?

edit: ha just realised i'm not actually a member yet.

4 times,

1 slide on an oil patch in the wet on my rgv (caused scrape on fairing),

1 into a car on the rgv (car pulled out infront and stopped), caused no damage since i managed to lose 99% of my speed before hitting, ended up just dropping the bike

1 on mt eden road on the gn (car pulled out infront, i clipped the white line while braking and swerving to avoid, lost the front, but didnt hit the car! woot!) bent a handlebar riser

my wee off on the weekend, broke a rearset

+ several stationary drops

ive had 3, all within auckland

1) got nicked from the side at low speed by a dick in a car who didnt look before changing lanes (cost him $1500 to replace 3 broken fairings on my ol FXR150 :D)

2) t-boned at royal oak roundabout at bout 40kph..first non-plane flight experience...wrote my bros bike off

3) was cleaning my mirrors, when i looked up the car in front had stopped without indication and i went smack bang into the back at bout 60kph....2nd non-plane flight experience, wrote my FXR off

p.s. lmao at steve and his stationary drops!! NOOOOOOB!!!!!

Lets see...

1) Dropped my bike on the RHS  unfortunately the rear brake lever was long enough to act as a lever to break the Rear-brake mechanics :argh: and

and thats about it....YET lol
So far so good
I'm now being extremely cautious :wari:

have had 1 crash so far in my 2.5years of riding, caused by a cage. the damage to me was just a bruse or 2, my bike however. bent LHS handlebar, the front rhs fairing was split into a bunch of pieces and the back lhs was scratched pretty bad. there wasnt any witnesses, and the guy tried to blame it on me. but after a while he just didnt contact me anymore.

I rebuilt the fairing with fibreglass and spray painted it myself and got decals made, it looked sweet. This was with my FZR btw

Other then that nothing really has happened

One bin after 2 years riding.

Right in front of the registry by the pedestrian crossing after a car reversed out in front of me in an unusual fashion. Should have avoided it by anticipating muppet driving in that area...

In a completely unrelated event, I joined the SMC the next day...

Claim still not sorted out fully, and has to go to disputes tribunal hearing. At least being a final-year law student helps with that one :devil2:

On the plus side, insurance picked up the tab for all the cosmetic damage and the bike is now mint and for sale :)

I just need my $500 excess back!!!

i've had countless dirt bike crashes, but only one serious one, where - and this is brilliant - on muriwai beach a 4wd decided to do a 90 turn without looking and i happened to be passing at about 70-80kph at the time AFTER following him for a while. i swerved and luckily i used the .5 of a second to get my leg out from between bike and car, and then impaled my chest on the handle bar, which hurt somewhat. dick gave false details too, nearly wrote off bike but i got secondhand parts and the frame seems straight enough despite the dent.

as for the road:
on my learners, at night in the wet, i hit some oil on a roundabout - broke mirror and fixed with glue - yet no-one stopped to see if i was ok, nor would they stop to let me wheel the bike off the intersection. also had a stationary drop where my shoelaces looped around the brake lever:argh:

on my restricted a 4wd stopped without any brake lights to turn right an i didn't notice till the last minute:shit: - i clipped their bullbar with my handle bar at 80kph and proceeded with a massive speed wobble off the road and into gravel - god only knows how i kept it upright, made the corner and stopped.

as for the vfr on my full licence - well that thing is so damn good and with my skill i've been able to dodge, regain traction, and stoppie my way out of trouble so far!

MY friends;

my 1st younger brother, on my old fxr, had a 14 year old girl unsupervised in a 4wd do a u-turn outside her house without looking. wrote off bike (worth 3k at the time). her dad told us to fuck off or he'd "smash" us. we called the cops, the dumbasses gave him false details even though he was at their house and told the cop that the girl was ok to drive alone unlicenced and uninsured because she was "learning". girl got ticketed, and after 3 court ruling, all against her, we got nothing.

and the best one of all;
me and my mate were cruising down muriwai at about 50kph - low tide. i was riding on the edge of the waves and he was keeping out of the salt. a 4wd was parked about 2 km north from the bike park, way up on the dry sand. the DUMBASS had a kite line out, and put the reel next to his front wheel on the far (north) side of his car, and was running the linel across the beach to his hand where he was holding it above his head -note on a dirtbike your head is about same height as standing.
at the last moment i realised what he was holding, and ducked.
then i heard the sound of a kite line snapping, looked over my shoulder and saw my mate lying back on his bike, and sitting back up. i stopped, he came over and asked, "what is wrong with my neck?" - he didn't know what he had hit. i took one glance and went "OH FUCK":shit:

motorbyclist
18th September 2007, 19:55
once the nylon line had hit him at his collar height and feeling something tugging he had leant backwards, the nylon then proceeded run through his shirt, into his flesh and up the muscles before snapping and taking off the slice with it.

so i was staring at a gash right across my mate's neck about 1.5 inches high.

i told him to go back to the 4wd and when we got there the dickhead was all "wtf you cut my finger". i told him we needed a first aid kit and he was all "uh i think i've got one". having only one bandage wrapped around his neck he asshole then refused to take us to help, and told us to ride 12KM down the beach to the surf club. we then waited 20 minutes for an ambulance, and then upon arrival hospital sat in a&e for 3 hours before he got any pain killers. surgery was at some time in the morning, where they simply stretched and stitched the wound closed - with SEVENTEEN stitches. he was off work for a few weeks, and had to deal with burns from the nylon around his neck (which luckily stopped alot of bleeding when it happened). one hell of a scar which he'll always have.

when the ambulance picked us up we left out bikes at the surf club, and his dad went and picked up our van and our bikes and came to the hospital. the 4wd guy was at the club complaining about his cut finger and was getting abused by the surfies, and apparently sometime around midnight some asshole went into the hospital parking building, broke into the van and stole my mate's bike! the cops said they found the thief but waited for some reason and never recovered the uninsured bike worth 5k at the time and the asshole did a runner.

all in all it was an epic fail - the one time we didn't bring a first aid kit nor cellphone due to not ever needing the kit and no signal up there. also ruined his family get-together as they all ended up at the hospital after i called mid bbq to tell them where we were and what had happened

i ride on the assumption that everyone out there is a blind idiot and seem to be proved right again and again -it's a very wise approach

funnily enough this approach is what has helped me to avoid and/or pre-empt a large number of near misses over the years

(hell even my dad who's been riding 30 years drives a ute when it's raining/he needs to - and we both can agree that rear visibility is not one of it's strong points)

note i did edit the post to make it a bit more sensible and less offensive (what i meant is that women/mother's on the school run, along with the elderly, are the most absent minded/distracted out there -edit:and people on cell phones)

Well had one drop while street dragging on a RG 8 years ago. Wasn't my bike but belonged to the "brothers". Broke a bone on my left pinky finger and I cannot bend it properly till this day. This was probably the worst I had

Dropped/crashed/slipped my CBR250 as I was doing a hard left turn at a junction. No big damages just scratches on the left fairing. Will never use Dunlop Arrowmaxes.

Almost dropped my CBR900RRS on a mud patch while pushing it but manage to hold the bike at the tank part at a 45 degree angle for 10mins till someone saw me and gave me a hand. No scratches and I was exhausted holding and pushing the heavy beast...

I have had numerous drops moving my bike around but only one serious incident on a bike (actually a moped).

This was in Australia before I had my mototcycle and I was riding around a on a nice 50cc moped.

I don't know what exactly I was doing on pedestrian walkway, but I was zipping down flipping past through the suburbs on a straight piece of pathway, through the corner of my eye the next thing I notice was a big fucken bumper comming out from my left.

SMACK I go, did a nice superman dive and a rolly poly on to the grass on my right *phew*. I was pretty dazed and confused at what the heck happened but I was lucky that I didn't get hurt. I realised it was a big massive SUV that hit me, the lady mum jumped outta the car was pretty shocked at what happen and she mentioned she usually beep the horn when comming out of drive ways but this time her friends baby was taking an afternoon nap so she didn't bother (great I thought).

Yep. I learnt my lesson about riding on foot paths.

Three days after I got my licence, I decided I was going to go on a KB ride. No gear, dodgy rear tyre, first time over 80kph.

Managed to keep it together until Kaiaua, but on the way home I did the usual trick of running wide on a corner. Hit gravel, hit fence, over the bars head first. Thank goodness for the fence, a large drop down a near-vertical bank.

Bent forks, scratched tail/exhaust. No gloves, so hands were bloodied. Visor scratched to hell, small chip off helmet's chin-guard paint.

Gained more than I lost. Learned a healthy respect for eating tarmac; crashing at the same speed on a mountain bike, you come off much better. Bikes are more painful. Also got to know GiJoe1313, who escorted me back to his house and cleaned up my hands/checked over my bike. Lent me some gloves that he still won't let me return. After seeing a photo of my hands, Quasievil gave me some prototype gear for free.

Lose one crash, gain one community.

Reading shit like this really rages me up

Anyway, my first bin:

Was going a bit fast around a corner, lost the front end, bike lowsided, and was rapidly approaching the edge of a 2m bank, so I just hopped off, rolled for a bit, and came to a stop safely in some bushes. Bike landed upside down on some rocks.

Well, I didn't 'crash' crash yet. And i don't intend to.

However I did the hard way the importance of putting a GN siestand down BEFORE you hop off it. ><

The crack on my fairing is from slipping on the curb by Stephen's house, catching the bike, and having the front wheel slide down anyway. As I was going less than 5k at the time it wasn't really a 'crash', but a drop. Which won't happen again!

I was messing about in a quarry we rode in a lot – I went flat out up this dirt face about 10 meters high – leapt into the air at the top, only to find out that the platform at the top had been dug away and it was 10 meters, plus my jump height, down; did a bit of damage.
Another time we were setting up hay bale ramps to jump 5 wire fences, unfortunately the bale gave up on the third jump and I ended up in the fence.
Once I was cruising out to a party in the back of Waingaro with a crate of Waikato on the tank, pegged out in a corner and high sided – glass everywhere.
Some mates and I were ripping around an open cast mine when two of us got too close to another bike – clipped, unfortunately I went over the edge and took a tumble down the mine face – bike was unfixable and I had a few broken ribs, 21 stitches to my knee – and surgery a few years later to try to fix it.
Going flat out on my new’ish Katana 650 trying to take a long sweeping corner as fast as I could, on state 27, a tractor and trailer pulled out of a farm gate in front of me, truck coming the other way – I ended up going off road into a 7 foot deep drain full of blackberry, tore my riding gear to pieces and ripped a bit of skin off – pulling stuff out of my body for weeks – bike was scratched but in one piece.
Riding my customised chopped tiger (stupid ape hangers) when I got my scalf caught in the back wheel – ripped off the back of the bike and dragged along the road on my knees.
Visit to the hospital, 6 weeks off work healing, inch deep groove cut into my neck made for some interesting conversations for a few years.
T boned a Holden – he was indicating to turn right, I went to his left, unfortunately so did he?

I’m not going to post anymore or you will all think I’m a loose unit or something.
I must point out it has been over 20 years since I came off.
I have stacked a couple of cages as well, when I was a teenager – actually I fell off a car once!!!
I am grateful I am still here, I am extra grateful I never injured anyone else, as a dumb arse young fella.

I was a stupid (but young) boy racer in my teens and early 20s. I had four car crashes that totalled 2 cars. I lost my license 3 times and clocked up close to $5000 in court fines and speeding tickets. What it took for me to smarten up was my last crash / loss of license when I lost control and nearly hit a bunch of pedestrians. Could have killed a kid or someone that day.

The positive from this was that I didn't get into motorbikes until my mid-20s, once I had 'woken up' and since 2001 have not had a single accident or speeding ticket. I can confidently say that I woudn't be here today if I had of been riding bikes (instead of cars) during my boyracer phase.

It was only from 2006 that I could finally get vehicle insurance again too (a consequence of repeated crashes and losses of license).

I think my other saving grace of today when it comes to avoiding crashes is the 5 years I rode a bicycle around Akl city. You develop a sixth sense on a bicycle as every other motorist IS THE ENEMY and they will kill you if you give them the chance. If a car looks like it might pull out in front of you... IT WILL. You search the drivers' seat of parked cars to see if they're going to open the door in front of you, you learn to look through the rear window of the driver in front of you to see what way their head is looking incase they decide to radically change lanes, you constantly look over your shoulder for who's behind you and you wisen up to the common scenarios where drivers are likely to cut you off etc etc.

Taking these cycling skills with me to my motorbike helps me to prevent 50k zone crashes almost daily when I'm commuting in Akl.

Anyway, bit of a diversion from the thread - but maybe this rant could help other hoons or commuters.

I hope this thread (accidents) will be useful for our club members and other readers, cause as it has demonstrated, many of us crash. Riding bikes aint all glory and sometimes a bit of respectful fear is a good thing to keep you in check.

But having said that, most of our members (that I have ridden with) have good protective gear and ride quite safely so I think the club in general is doing a good job. Be good to aim for zero bins on our rides, errr, maybe from now on....!

alot of it has to do with your riding style and riding skill

if you're patient/defensive, with years of experience, there's not much that'll stuff you up,

whereas if you're a nutter who's only been riding for a month you're another statistic

experience helps you better predict random things like that (there are many signs you should be aware of), and experience helps you better avoid it (even if it's a matter of stopping/swerving without locking/sliding) and again alot comes back to your riding style - ie keeping out of trouble in the first place, not undertaking/overtaking slow vehicles unless they are definetley not turning etc etc

myself i'm no stranger to using my horn to get attention, and always have my fingers hovering over the brake/clutch. both are things every rider should be doing.
also, how many of you feel confident in emergency stopping? i know just to get my learners i had to ride at a brick wall waiting for the instructors signal to stop - on a dodgy cb100 - and he never gave it until the absolute last moment - which i suspect is why the cb100 was so dodgy - and it was bloody scary, so the first 2 times i stopped early but the third i used my balls rather than my brain and got it

Another timely reminder today boys and girls of how vital keeping to the left on corners is. Me and another biker would have been wiped out today as we traveled around a tight corner near Piha IF we hadn't of been on the left side of our lane. Note, I said leftside of OUR LANE, not just left of the centre line.

Guy in a red car decided to cross the centre line as he overtook a turning car (on a blind corner of course).

IF YOU DON'T ALREADY AND FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, PLEASE TRY TO KEEP IN THE LEFT HALF OF YOUR LANE ON TIGHT / BLIND CORNERS.

yeah now i wish i had had them

the subframe is bent sideways a fair bit and a radiator got squished and now leaks, but otherwise the rear was scratched/bent slightly anyway and the front is fibreglass so repairable with a bit of work

i might redo the rear fairings too and have the whole bike looking brand new again, keep the original honda paintjob and all:first:

use rear brake in emergencies

in an emergency where you want to stop you use the front or both. the rear has less than a quarter of your braking power

in a corner, brakes will make your bike heavy and hard to turn, but brakes in corners usually lead to disaster.

that said, using the rear brake is a good way to slightly modify your speed without engine braking

if you need to stop, use both

easy solution is to pay attention (i can vouch for that), look around the corner at all times, and don't go in too fast (pays to follow someone and use them as an indicator, but dont target fix on them)

class dismissed

i swear, looking at that corner again on wenesday and my memory of the accident, i must've zoned out or something, and didn't look up around the corner. should've gone to bed earlier the night before.

and yeah, i need some muscle to help me bend the rear back into line, hopefully i can pick up my radiator tomorrow, i'll buy a new indicator and probably ride her naked while the fairings are being repaired

fairing damage, radiator damage, wingmirror and indicator, plus subframe bent

oh, and i got a bruise

what happened? i was tired and not paying attention, so basically went straight off a corner, and once i realised what i was doing i didn't look back around the corner, so really just rode straight off, dodged a pole, got sideways and once i thought i'd be sweet i highsided (bike got traction and flipped over onto it's side, catapulting me off)

Since posting this thread nearly three months ago at least 6 of our members have reported accidents either from their own fault or others. Whilst not every member replied, it would appear that the vast majority of our riders have in fact binned at some stage.

Surprisingly, no serious injuries were reported in the any of the recent accidents apart from bashed up bikes.

Buy a new sub frame....or modify it with a CBR600RR sub-frame

motorbyclist
6th December 2007, 16:25
the subframe was slightly bent before the accident and didn't create anywhere near as much a problem. i'm thinking something else is out too

and finding a straight vfr400 subframe is going to be somewhat difficult. this is where i think i call up insurance and double check my cover.... it's a bugger i've already spent $200 bucks on it (mirror, indicator, oil, coolant and radiator repair)

Macstar
6th December 2007, 16:51
Don't tell the insurance company that you have already had a go at repairing it as I am sure there will be some sub-clause somewhere prohibiting such.

I am not very experienced in non-straight bikes. Obviously it's either coming from the front or rear end or possibly a bit of both.

First, try riding the bike without hands on a safe, flat and straight piece of road. Does the wheel / steering wobble, does it pull to the left then?

Next: Stand the bike upright with a rear wheel stand or jack etc, get a straight edge (long straight piece of metal) and line the two wheels up. Then get a measuring tape and measure the handle bars from different positions to see if they are symmetrical i.e. ground up and from opposing sides of the bikes frame etc. This will hopefull help you assertain whether the bike's 'straying' is coming from the front or not.

Rear is gonna be tricker and I'd personally get a mechanic to check that out, especially on a mono swing arm.

A bent subframe in itself shouldn't make your bike turn left, though I guess if your body was made to feel crooked, you may instinctively start turning the bike to try and get it lined up?

Good luck bro, I hope you get it sorted soon as I need a challenging riding buddy!

motorbyclist
6th December 2007, 22:33
yeah, i think (read: hope) it's might just be the subframe putting my weight off centre

if the forks were twisted that shouldn't do it, and they should be fine anyway. i'm pretty hopeful it's just a weight issue from the subframe, but there's always the chance i've bent/moved something more serious - looking at the fairings and the dent on the tank, plus the movement in the frame after the crash i'm concered the main chassis/engine has moved/twisted in some way. the only way to find out really is to get the rear properly straight and see what happens then. i doubt the mono arm moved as that didn't slam into the ground

as for testing, i tried several different roads and always got the same result. i couldn't even bring the bike staight by leaning without touching the bars - though i didn't want to try too hard for obvious reasons

i'll be round for drinks and we can all kick the tyres and maybe have a go at fixing it

Squiggles
6th December 2007, 22:58

second, dropped my fxr150 at a petrol station. DUMB.

third, riding my vfr away from a petrol station and put knee down around first corner of an s-bend (joining two one-way roads together) and, according to the driver who was behind me, my kickstand flicked out and when i went to do the left-hander, she wouldn't go..bin into island garden! was wicked. went flying off the front and rolled about 3 or 4 times..

fourth, taking off from lights on vfr two weeks later, some FUCKING CAGE DRIVERS with hotted up cars thought it'd be awesome to lay some diesel and do burnouts, council laid gravel next morning to cover it, NO SIGNAGE, bike simply fell out from under me. rad. one guy helped me pick it back up again.

fifth, and the unfortunate end to the vfr..cruising home from work, cut into left lane from right, lady very slowly moving forward, no brake lights on, didn't realise i wouldn't stop till it was way too late, jammed the bloody bike halfway under her little suzuki alto..

2. locked front wheel on a mini chopper going into the driveway at my old work. low speed 20kph... in the wet

3. Stupid women ripped a u turn not seeing me in lane next to her....hit rear quarter...i was okay.

4. Lost the rear on cold tyres on my first zxr250a.

5. Sent my first zxr250a off a corner on the kaiaua road came in too hot etc etc kittyhawk ran me off the road blah blah.

6. Took my mates bucket out for a spin at the bucket track...lost the front out of a corner....lowside.

7. Lowsided my second zxr...a ZXR250C in the wet pulling into trugood drive east tamaki...20kph barely on the gas...hit diesil....buh bye! was on my arse before i knew wtf had happened.

8. Put my mates bike into the back of a van on the motorway while lane splitting because a guy changed lanes without indicating...i went oh fuck swerved around him had nowhere to go but van.

9. Purposely lowsided a scooter me and my mate were screwing around at a roundabout seeing how far over we could get her before we binned it.

turns out you can get the footboard flexing under your foot on a a yamaha mint...until the centrestand lever the rear wheel off the ground.

might just be because you buy them with the intention of thrashing them till you get your full

just like all the new gsxrs being binned - they're cheap(er) so there's plenty of them and they're all being thrashed, so you'd expect to hear alot about them crashing

yeah, how exactly?

came onto the bridge at waiwakaiho in new plymouth and when i pulled on the brakes, the front tire slid on an expansion joint, made the bike tip sideways.

It's because kawasaki riders arn't fags like honda riders, and scraping your fairings is just breaking the bike in.

fuck man, you're just full of bitterness aren't you? i was just on your 'rating the new zxr250' thread and i gotta say, you sound like a retard. learn how to ride, and how to act like a real person around other people.

and its more along the lines that 'fag' honda riders know how to ride, know how to pick a good bike, and know when a kawasaki rider is near by the sound of fairings scraping along the road and the smell of oil coming from the poor quality build engine.

i'd take a cbr250 over a zxr250 anyday. USD's aren't all that important until you get to the big bikes.

Sorry, i'm not usually that rude - wasn't a good day. But yeah, would be much appreciated if this thread can be kept to just a report of crashes and related stats etc so that future readers don't have to unecessarily go through pages of joking around stuff to get to the next bin.

Thanks and sorry.

TOTO = 3 Bins

1. Low sided the Hyosung - fairing damage, TOTO's pants damage

2. Flipped a Vespa 150 at work - minor scratches to vespa and TOTO

3. Crash landed the Hyosung on remuera road - Bike Dead, TOTO not a scratch.

That makes 3 - hope its all...

I have had one bin on KB ride, got hit from the back from another biker. Low speed, so paint job few bits and pieces nothing major (enuf for the insurance company to make it write off :pinch: ), but i'm slowly getting it all fixed.

I never dropped it (almost - few times on slippery floor with pillion that was moving a bit to much - i was stationary tho)

I dont like pushing it to the limits, i do have days when i do go nuts, but i dont have many of those atm.

:girlfight: hehe, nah im not angry, i mean if he did it on purpose, i would be upset. I would rather have an accident doing 40km/h than 100, so im glad it happened the way it did and that we did not both end up in hospital. bike, gear are just items, you can always get new one.

And about that room in motel... mmmm i will think about it... :eek5:
