Could be keen since my schedule is flexible at the mo. I grew up in the Coro so know the roads as good as anyone. Suggest postponing your lunch stop a little further along the ride since you'll get there in about 40 minutes from the CBD.

18th September 2007, 12:51
I will be touring not racing since my bike has topspeed of 130kph lol

Edit: Yeah we could postpond the lunch to Thames McDonalds where also we could suggestably meet?

deanohit
18th September 2007, 15:59
Well, we'll be on under 250's, and it's just a quiet cruise. I'm all for takin 2 days to do it an have the chance to take in the scenery clearly and not in a blur.

Try Anchor Lodge in Coromandel Town. Beautiful cabins and within crawling distance of the Admirals Arms pub and the superb chip shop. Have a look at http://www.coromandeltown.co.nz/ for other accommodation options. Pity we're renovating our bach down on the harbour at present or you could have had that at a sharp price on a weekday.

Because I snore so loudly, it'd wake the dead. No lie! I snore as loud as a jet taking off! Whenever I used to travel, I'd always request my own room...because no-one could get any sleep if I did! :sweatdrop

And... even when I did get my own room, my snoring would go right through the walls! :o Many instances where people would pound on the walls or the door to get me the hell up so I could stop snoring...before dropping right off and doing it again

Also, I have a secret identity to protect... Camo Ninja Rider!

WHAT ME MUST DECIDE SOON:

Time of departure from Auckland
Accomodation (At Thames?)
Meeting place at Thames

Thats about it at the moment :)

I say:

If we are going to have BBQ for dinner at Thames, Aucklanders don't have to haste going to Thames since it's only about 2 and a half hour ride according to Google Earth :)

Yeah that's a good idea, Meet at Thames and on the next day, we do the whole Coro-loop having lunch at Whitianga.

Any other suggestions? :)

Edit: PLEASE PM me to confirm if you are comming to this trip

kevfromcoro
21st September 2007, 05:27
Thames isnt that far.i can do it in my car in just over an hour.did it once in 35 mins on a cbx1000.used $15 worth of gas one way.u guys doing the loop ,,are u going up to coro and then down the other side.the road to whangamata is ok..comes out at wahi..bit of a haul..but its the full loop
KEV

I'd suggest to leave not to early, maybe meet at 9.00-9.30am and leave at 10pm, so that people would have plenty of time to fill up, and buy what ever they need, and discuss the roads that we are going to take. etc...

Macstar
21st September 2007, 15:18
Yeah, Akl to Thames (via the coastal route you are planning) would take a max of 2hrs from downtown Akl to Thames town on a single 250cc.

From Thames town, it would take just over an hour to get to Coromandel town (going slow).

All up, approx a generous 3 hrs to get from Akl to Coromandel Town on the Scorpio.

Next day: Coro Town to Waihi would take you just over 2 hrs (going slow) and Waihi to Paeroa to Akl about another 2.5 hrs on the Scorpio.

So probably around 5 hours on day II.

Total actual ride time: Somewhere around 8 hrs.

I know there's guys on here that will say they've done the full loop in under 6 hours, but you're going to be cruising along at less than 100kph.

deanohit
21st September 2007, 17:37
I'm in mate. Am keen to stay with Kevfromcoro in Thames and do the loop the next day around to Waihi. Also cool to meet up whenever, early or late on the Thursday.

EJK
21st September 2007, 20:29
Alright :)

As Out-law suggested, lets meet at around 9:30am-ish :)
We will take plenty of time for this trip.

Since the accomodation is about some distance above Thames, lets meet at Thames McDonalds and ride up together :)
If Aucklanders grab 2 1/2 hours down to Thames, ETA would be around 12:30pm. Quite early to have dinner at that time lol we could find something else to kill the time

Accomodation: Ok I've pm'ed kevfromcoro before and he said it's cool to stay so :)
So we will be staying at kevfromcoro's for the night  Thank you Kev:)
We will also be having BBQ together :2thumbsup

Everybody cool with that? :)

I suggest you goto your accommodation, drop your bags. And ride further up the coast, there will be plenty of places you would want to get photos etc. Ride back down for BBQ, and complete the loop next day.

Just a heads up, there is a bit of seal repairs on the roads on the west coast of Coro. So just watch out for those shaded corners.

I may come along, but will know closer to the time with work etc.

I thought of takin a day off on Friday to go with you - but I have too much work on.

Don't want to stuff your day up but - why don't you do the part around the coast from Auckland to Maranda on the way to Thames day one, then the full loop and back to Auckland day 2

The other suggestion is doing Auckland to Pearoa, Waihi, Whangamata, Kopu to Thames (bottom part of the loop)
Then the day 2 do the top half of the loop.

Have a great trip whatever you do

Has your bike got a different sprocket or was that doing 14,000rpm?, because (stock standard) they are geared to redline at 160kph at 13,000rpm.

CONFIRMED DETAILS: First group will be leaving from BP Botany at 10am so be there at suggestably 9:30am orelse you will have to join the 2nd group

Aucklanders and Taurangans will meet at Thames McDonalds around 12pm and head North together to take some flicks :)

On the next day, 1st group will meet the 2nd group at Thames McDonalds :D, suggesting maybe at 11am MAX

Then head to Whitianga to have lunch.

After that we will ride all~around the coro-loop till we reach Waihi, say goodbyes and take last shots and we will head our own ways :)

Aucklanders: Just to save time and our physical stamina, I suggest to take the normal SH2 and SH1 to Auckland

If you are happy with the conditions above, flick me a PM to be in part of the Group 1 :) Barbe-Q for dinner too :)

P.S. Hey Carbacca, would you like to lead the 2nd group?

P.P.S It is not a compulsory to ride together for the 2nd group  If you want to ride alone to Thames that fine

P.P.P.S I will have my camera ready to take 3 Gix-R'-us 250 at once :)

P.P.P.P.S "Fireplace" Restaurant's menu is Xtraordinary! Soup of the day itself costs $10.50 alone! Still keen? Lets find something else lol

To put it quite bluntly:

- He used to ride like a complete cock.
- Especially around town in 50k zones ect
- He's a bit of a smartass too.

You really dont want to be compared to him.

On a serious note:

So lets keep this as a ride, not a race, because sooner or later someone will take things that much further out of their skill range and bin it, screw over their bike, injure themselves, or worse.

Not the greatest thing to happen on a ride.

If mother in law is still here to look after younglings (school holidays) will make the journey across the plains on for the Friday meeting at 11am in Thames, do the coro-loop and home again.

Just been through the 1000km service so keen to get the GPX on something a bit longer.

right i am just about confirmed now, will put in leave application for friday (but thats a bit hard since my boss aint here cos i think he electricuted himself yesterday) but i think i can get away no probs

anyways i will be heading out of auckland early on friday morning, will be leaving central auckland about 7.30 to beat the traffic, meeting up with a coupld of guys at BP Autobahn at 8. plan at this stage is to head down the boring way and save the exciting stuff for the coro but that could all change as i think the timings quite loose (shouldnt take more than an hour and a half to get to thames from papakura the boring way which puts us there at....9.30 for a 11am meeting time) EJ if you want to leave thames earlier at say...10am that would work better methinks.

Man, you guys have fun aye.

Crank those corners and get some peg griding action on your Scorpion EJ, or at least a few scuff marks on your boots from the tarmac.

I am fully busy with Uni man, so gotta give a miss.

And once again, the madness of the Coro takes it toll...
Time is fleeting, got to go riding!
It's time to do the Coro!

And I's gets to do it again tomorrow hyuk!

Yes, I did the half coro by myself when the others decided to sack out on the sundrenched porch, quenching their thirst with Kev's home brewed beer and snacking on bangers and mussels (freshly picked kaimoana!)

Must say, crazy cagers on the coro (par for the course), watched them drift over center lines, cut corners and do dodgy things! :eek5:

Only pucker moment was when I was heading up around a blind corner and ol'spidey sense just meant I had to hug left ... and around comes a concrete truck straddling the white line! :gob: Gah, if I was riding my normal line I'd be fender paste  But apart from that, all good!

Lovely scenery, excellent twisties and they have really improved the road surfaces from the loose metal from before. Just the usual roadworks being carried out with the stop lights.

And... I get to do it all again tomorrow! :woohoo: Spot ya like a done digger at the Autobahn early tomorrow! :niceone:

Yeah thanks heaps for the hospo Kev and your other mate that was there (forgot his name). I went down just for the day and sat on the deck drinking home brews and eating mussels too. A wicked spot and awesome pad you have there Kev. Be a shame to let it go mate.

I'd like the opportunity to return the hospitaility some time, or at least supply a few beers and sausages next time.

Cheers again guys - and hope the second day of riding went well.

Just got back a half hour ago, was great to put some faces to your KBer name, what an awesome days riding with you guys thanks. Sorry guys, but the video camera didn't record any video footage :crybaby:(something to do with the memory card crapping out) like EJ eating a muesli bar while riding through the twisties or me passing Scracha on the Ducati and no, he wasn't stopped!! and then to have him blast past 30 seconds later with the awesome sound of the Duke. Or my  moment when the back let go and I almost hit the barrier.
The Pics:
Pic 1: Scrachas bed mate ;)
Pic 2: All the bikes at Corromandel Town.
Pic 3: The Ninja next the "awesome Ducati".
Pic 4: All the bikes at Kevs place.

That was THE BEST ride ive ever been on, great weather, great roads, great bikes, great food and great company. :headbang::woohoo::Punk:

I did somthing like 350 today, went back via Waihi beach, was nice to take a break on the beach for a while.

We all thought yesterday after a few beers that since Kevs place is for sale, we'd all buys shares and have it as a starting and layover point for KBer's doin the loop. Ahhh, the great ideas we have with the help of alchohol.

No, I kept my speed up so that wouldn't happen. :buggerd:

Its called shit suspension, and too much riding (though there can never be enough)
