Got my first real experience of tunnle vision at the recent Wairarapa sprints. After the rolling sprint, you're eyes are almost tired, feels like they have been scanning left/right at high speed the whole way. A doctor at work told me that at normal highway speeds, you loose something like 20% peripheral vision, which if you think about it, is pretty scary!
PS: To train yourself for high speed riding, I hear it helps to walk around all day with two toilet roll inner tubes over your eyes. :msn-wink:

Looks like the pillion was holding the camcorder lol. I was a bit disappointed though, 4MB on dial-up takes a while

Vivian Street on to the Terrace Tunnel is great. You start out at the top of Vivian Street at the lights. Take off for 100m, then quick right hander going downhill followed by quick left-right and you hit the tunnel doing about 120.
The tunnel's about 800 meters long and if you're on a fast bike you could easily top 200. I tried in my Legacy GT-B and had it bouncing off the 200km/hr limiter before the end of the tunnel so on a bike it's easily possible, not that I've tried - because the main problem once you get out of the tunnel (IF there's no traffic and no police) is you have a left hand downhill off-camber corner with bumps and corrugations. So you have to SLOW DOWN!!! Also, there's Police to contend with and a speed camera.
A mate of mine got done doing a 140 km/hr wheelie through the tunnel on his TL1000S.

Did 220 across the Hauraki plains once, was recognizing the road signs just after I passed em', Once was enough
Rode the Sydney tunnel with a group of mates on HDs a few times.
Don't know what the speed was but the sound was awesome.
I love tunnels, once could never be enough :msn-wink:

I've seen a indicated 90mph on a XS650 and it wasn't the nicest bike I've ridden at that speed,we had both a XS650 and TX650 hanging around the place and this thing a TX650 chopper,I once had the misfortune to ride it across town and bloody horrible would be a understatement

Vivian Street on to the Terrace Tunnel is great
Yeah, thats a great piece of road, especially if you get a red light, so when it changes green you leave whatever is next to you, waaay behind :killingme
BUT...
Watch out, both times I've gone "hard" through that section, I've suddenly felt very loose on the back end, and have had to back off slightly. And as you say, I think there are cops on the bridge with them laser guns now and then.

In a twin-turbo Legacy ... piece of cake. Mine handled like a dream - mmm Bilstein suspension yum...
On a bike - as Stonechucker says its a bit of a lottery going in as there MIGHT be shit on the road - his bike would feel it more than mine with a good 60-70 more ponies at the back wheel - if the road's clean its fine - just don't chicken out or the bike will go wildly off line - keep the throttle on and pick your entry and exit points just right and its like a knife through butter... back off the throttle too hard and I reckon you'd risk a nasty highside.
As Stonechucker also said the Police know the Terrace Tunnel is a right drag strip if no-one's in it. That whole piece of road used to be wicked until the Police patrols and the speed camera ruined it for those who couldn't control their accelerative urges.

I've had my XS1 up to the real ton more than once - but once is enough! Been in 7 Taranaki tunnels, not at speed though...walked through the abandoned Newmarket rail tunnel. The young guys used to ride their bikes in the tunnels at Stony Batter on Waiheke Island.
