Scariest experience of my life

Out for a spin on some country roads with a close friend. She's behind me - suddenly I notice there is nobody following me. Eek.

Turn back and find her lying under the bike off the road. I almost dropped my own bike trying to get off. Never ever been so scared in my life. Seems luck was on her side, she came away with a graze and a broken thumb. The bike is a bit grazed but ridable.

I think seeing a friend go down has to be the next worse thing to going down yourself... I don't remember being nearly this shaken up when I had my spill! Seeing her lying still under the bike was not cool :(

That's not good and not something you want to see too often. I had a smiliar experience a few months ago (friend down). Hope she's OK. You should keep an eye on the Manawatu threads and join in sometime, some bloody good riding to be had.

I remember following my better half coming back from Aramona (for those that don't know either bank on one side and the harbour on the other... some pretty twisty tight corners...) second ride she had been on... and she went a bit fast for one corner for her experience and I was watching nearly went into the drink... :crazy::eek5:

Thing was I was watching from behind and there was absolutely nothing I could have done. :crybaby: She was lucky and got the bike round the corner and we carried on our merry way and stopped further up the road... at the time I was shitting myself more than she was...

Anyway its not a good thing to see happen... and I hope your friend is OK and gets back in the saddle soon.

Glad she's ok! Had a similar experience about three weeks ago...

We bought my wife a scooter about 6 weeks ago, she'd been riding for 3 weeks and was pretty confident (on the scooter... 50cc's so top speed was something like 40k) Anyhow... Was picking up my shiny new zx-6r that morning, decided we'd go for a ride up Oriental Parade, was a bit windy... I'm following her, see she's riding pretty close to the curb, all of the sudden the scooter swerves, she highsides, and scooter and wife are flipping down the road in front of me. Locked my front brake for a split second and then autopilot took over and i countersteered around. Thank god for training and a decent amount of experience. I stop, look back and she's pulling the scooter off herself... We'd also bought her a proper jacket the same day as well (thank god). Ended getting a few bruises and a pretty good scrape (from the pad) on her elbow, but all in all could've been much worse.

I think we sort've go into denial while we're rolling down the road, she still doesn't think it was that bad, I was shitting myself. Scooter steering broke off both steering stops and ended up 180 degrees out. Frame bent at the steering head... The guy at the dealer said it had been a "good effort".:slap:

On the plus side, I was able to motivate her to take the RoadSafe course and get her learners license, she's now got a Suzuki FXR150 and has ridden more in one weekend than she did over the course of three weeks on the scooter. Practice practice practice!

This is what scares me about perhaps getting my girl on a bike, she's had no experience and though i'd love to go riding with her I think I'd just prefer to put her on the back (unless she pushes to get her own bike)

She'll be alright, I am sure she's a big girl. Get her some good training and everything will be sweet, and I am sure you'll be getting plenty of action from her (riding get the adrenaline pumping) for introducing her to the world of motorcycling.

It's always way more fun having your g/f, wife, mistress, whatever, riding with you.

It reminds me of when we did our trip around NZ
Carissa (my wife) was following me towards New Plymouth, it had been a long day of gravel riding from Auckland along the coast, we were back on the main road, she was following me, and I would check every so often in the mirrors to make sure my little shadow was there :)

Anyway we went through some pretty rough road works, and in the middle was a huge pothole, I avoided it but Carissa didn't :gob: Her leg slipped off the peg and hit the ground, in turn dislocating her knee, the first I knew was when I glanced in my mirror to see her weaving across to the left hand side of the road, gave me a hell of a fright!!!

I still to this day do not know how she managed to stay on the bike, and pull over and stop, all with her leg at a stupid angle and in incredible pain!!

I did a U turn, and nearly canned off in the process, and went to her aid, she couldn't get off the bike, but was ill (from shock and pain I guess), so I managed to get her off, and I had the job of trying to put it in (which apparently hurts more :eek5:)
We rested for about an hour before she said, we better go, I want to get to the finish :clap:

What a legend

Still haunts me what could of happened though

Because of that (In February) she now finally has a date with the surgeon in 2 weeks time, so it shouldn't happen again!! :clap:

One of the reasons the vifferbabe doesn't have her own bike...
We've talked about it, but I worry about things happening to her when she's on the back of my bike, so having her on her own bike would be too much.

Something that would be worse is seeing someone seriously injured or killed. This is thankfully not something that's happened to me; the nearest I've come is one of my friends in the 70s saw his friend killed while on a test-ride. He hit a power pole when he failed to take a corner, and was killed instantly.

Yea gonna take her to a friends one day to have aplay on a trail bike, roads not a good place to learn imo.

This oen tiem when I was out riding with some friends on my cruiser I had a foot peg hit a juddery part of a corner, an went down slammed into the ditch, they didn't see an kept going tiul they got tothe top of the hill, then kept going further away. ten minutes later they decided I couldn't be that slow an came back an found me in the ambulance.

Many years ago I was on my first-ever pillion ride - my sister was on the bike in front with her boyfriend, and I was behind with his brother. The road was wet and as we turned right from SH1 into Turangi I saw the bike slide out from underneath them and watched my sister slide across the road in front of on-coming traffic, with her bare hand on the ground (no gloves - no protective gear at all).

I swear my heart stopped for the duration of her slide.

Anyway, all the cars missed her and she got up with barely a scratch on her! Even her hand was hardly grazed! I guess the same slippery road that had caused the bike to let go, also let her skim across the surface without much damage.

But yeah, that feeling of total helplessness as you watch something like this unfold in front of you... I would actually have preferred to be the person who took the tumble rather than the person who watched it.

I worry about things happening to her when she's on the back of my bike, so having her on her own bike would be too much.


I'm on completely different website with this one, I worry more when Gg has been on the back of my bike than when she's riding herself, it's all about "if I fuck up" she's guna get hurt, so am way happier she ride's her own ride and I can enjoy mine(ride)

Geez some pretty heart stopping tales on this thread.

I've come off twice with folks watching. I'm sure they didn't enjoy seeing me come off, but at least neither bin was a major physically. First one I was so relaxed I only bashed an elbow on a raised median strip (I can imagine if you're tensed up you'd fall worse), second one I whacked a arm/shoulder (same one darn it) but could ride home.

Have seen a few mates bin, it's not great seeing a mate on the deck. My first one was coming around a corner to see a cow running off and our friend still lying in the road, he travelled some distance after colliding with the beast. I just kept praying for him to get up, he did, broken collar bone and broken thumb, lucky to be alive. He no longer rides which is a shame, he is an awesome rider, just bad luck.

Second mate got clipped by a car on a twisty on his side of the road. Thank god he managed to stay on the roadside and not down the bank (long way down if he'd kept going). Bloody cager didn't stop - arse wipes!:Pokey:

Anyway it does put the shits up you for sure seeing a fellow ride/mate down. Luckily I've not seen anything more serious, really don't ever want to be at a fatal crash of a biker, especially a friend.

i saw my 7yr old fall of down the farm race on one of those whare house bikes
gave me a fright but when i saw he was alrite i pissed myself laughing,i wouldn't laugh if it happend on the road though,fucken scary thought.

Tonight my daughters friend came over for a sleep over, we had a family trip over at school on our push bikes, anyway she tried my girls new bike with hand brakes, started spinning the pedals backwards looking for the rear brake as she went over a 1 metre drop onto concrete. Full flip onto face, broken teeth etc horrible to watch as I rode past her and man did we feel bad ringing mum.

I was the one following ya that time, thankfully it was a pretty low speed drop with a fair bit of flat to slide on, just glad i wasnt too close

Slows you down a bit to have a pillion, with that extra bit of "should i overtake here?" or "if i gun it she might go off the back so i wont" mentality to it

I think i prefer following hanne through the twisties, she can have a headstart if i want to go quicker, otherwise i find myself checking mirrors after corners and thats neither too safe nor too enjoyable

It's especially bad when you are moving quick and they hit another vehicle and you wonder how they could possible survive. Then when they move or get up you finally breath again.

Couples of years back my wife who has ridden all her life, bought a new second hand bike, decided to do the Coro loop. next day well shit me, the tyres were warm but into the best of them she went way across the center line her tyres had seemed to let go, three hours later when home she told me about all of her probs so I took her bike for a run, it ended being the tyres through lack of use and being four years old had gone off..(to hard) no grip, we sold her bike and in the last two years we have done 48 thousand k's together. yep I do worry what may happen if I screw up, so that keeps us on the playing field, easy corners not so much slower riding, just easy corners, would hate to see my wife who is my mate and best friend down on the tarmac, through my stupidity, hence I let you all go past at speed while we enjoy our ride, it is hard but that is the way I ride with my mate on the back.....

It's always horrible watching loved ones in pain or danger......however, one of the funniest things I have seen was when trying to get Ms Laava into riding on a KH 100 2 stroke trail bike. After chasing her all over the farm trying to get her going properly, eventually saw her standing kinda off the bike facing up a banking on the side of the track with the throttle nailed and the bike leaping up and back, over and again into the poor cockys fence, smoke pouring out the exhaust and Jo wondering how the hell to make it all go away!:clap:
