I guess you've been here-http://www.650motorcycles.com/evolution.html
Almost bought one back in 1980. But the dealer didn't have one available apart from a demo. Bought a CB650C instead (I know I know).

Their first real sports bike?

Wouldn't agree with that,Yamaha were making two stroke road/race bikes with the YDS series bikes and with race kits available over the counter well before those came along

Might be a sportsbike to you but here in Upper Hutt they were most often seen as cop bikes - the MOT had a few of the jaffa coloured ones (orange stripy things). Were the first models electric start? I recall the cop bikes were elec start - the starter was operated by a decompressor lever rather than a button

The XS1 had no electric starter and wasn't used by the MOT,that was the SX2.
That little lever operated both the decompresion and the starter  ,they can still be bought new from the states for big bore XSs.The cops used XSs,from SX2 through to the B model electro.
My first one was an ex MOT B model and faster for some reason than the one I got now.
Today it's easy to poke the stick at the XS,but in their day they were as ground braking as the R1 today.Possibly more so,they saved Yamahas M/C line from extinction and remain their longest running model.
I bought my first one as a substitute for a Bonnie,Back then if you bought a bonnie you spent as much time trying to keep the cartoon wearers from stealing it as you did riding. With the XS you got the same vibes(lots of em,)without the hassles.
Cheers.

I have the green XS1 as my wall paper. The early ones with gaiters had external springs, the XS1 B like mine had internal springs....I don't think we got many of the external spring model here.Yamaha were unfortunate with the XS1,spending a lot of time perfecting it for a market that had shifted by the time of it's release - Norton had transformed the staid Atlas into the sexy and sporty Commando,Triumph released the Trident and Rocket 3,then with the launch of the CB750 the 750 superbike class was the premium motorcycle market, the 650 twin was doomed.Remodeled into a cruiser it had a long life, and one of the biggest cult following of any Jap bike.Check out those photos of Bob Greene testing a pre production model, typical of him...he puts dirt tyres on it and takes it off road...that guy was a legend.

Perhaps you should put up some pictures of them instead of poxy old four strokes then :moon:

We had a XS650,TX 650 and a XS650 Chopper at the flat I used to live and another friend who also had a XS650 Chopper

The TX650 used to start weaving at any speed over 120kmh until some Koni shocks were fitted, the XS650 was a quite a good bike to ride at the 120kmh mark but wasn't comfortable to ride at anything much faster and the chopper was bloody awful at any speed over walking pace

My apoligies Jackrat I didn't realise you didn't have a sense of humour

Wasn't it you who first said about Yamaha two strokes not being a REAL sports bike?

Despite the fact they had a long history of two stroke sports bike long before the Yamaha four strokes came along and I must have been mistaken but wasn't the thread titled Yamahas first sports bike?

I guess I'm only allowed an opinion on what constitutes their first sports bike if it agrees with yours

For what it's worth (which will be SFA to you) I enjoyed riding them,at the same time a friend had a 650 Tiger and I would have had the XS over it any day, everything worked just that little bit better than the Triumph and the XS didn't seem to lose as many bits to vibration the only area the Triumph seemed to out perform the XS was a little more wank factor as Triumphs were a bit more rare at the time

When I was living in Dunedin for a couple of years I "raced" a TQ at Beachlands (I say "raced" 'cos the car was a fucked piece of shit that could barely drag itself along) Anyway, one of the other TQ drivers had a Yamaha 650 in his car. Had a shed full of motors for spares, when they blew up (which was quite often) he just threw the old motor away, cut the gearbox off another one and off he went again. He was fairly successful considering only 650 when the class limit was 800, and GS/GSX Suzukis were the motor to have.
