I understand your surprise at the pricing on some of RB's bikes, but to be fair to them, they have all the right in the world to put whatever price they like on their wheels.
Constantly raising this issue isn't doing you, RB, or even any of their prospective clients any good.
If it concerns you that much, maybe you should discuss the situation with their sales manager.
I have no connection with said shop.

It's twelve years old. And, for $8.5k, it will sell. We are heading right into the thick of newbie season, the sun is shining, and somebody somewhere wants the nicest/fastest 250 they can lay their hands on. They'll sell it. And a grand's worth of gear.

with all the money these young fellas put into there cars i cant see them having a problem forking out 8k for a bike they can ride on there learner
licence, if theres a market for them the bikes shops gonna expliot it after all it is a business,as for me i'd never pay that much for a 2nd hand 250.
i'm in 2 minds over this part of me says what a fucken rip off,the other says good on them for making a profit.

Red Baron's prices for shitty old imported and spruced-up 250s are just the invisible hand of Adam Smith at work, I'm afraid.
The huge number of new Hyosung GT250Rs appearing on the roads is testament to the way the NZ market is gagging for sporty 250cc bikes. There will always be folk out there who can't bear to make do with 30hp for the duration of their learner and restricted licences; the aging fleet of ZXR/CBR two fiddy imports is their only legal hope.

$8500 is just peanuts for someone with a job.

Funny thing is both the orange and green one going for 8.5g isn't stock standard factory fairing decals. They have ZX10R decals which suggest it has been painted....for whatever reason you be the judge.
And yes this has been discussed a few times. Business is business, gotta make a dollar or two and more if you can like Red Baron. It's amazing how the GT 250 R shitters sell like hot cake and yet the n0o0obs don't go out and get a RS250 for that money?
Hello0o0oo..is there something wrong with me or the rest of NZ?

I'd just like to point out that I ride said 30Hp bike and I have a full license :P
The large number of ho bags on the road is testament to the fact that a lot more people are getting a bike license (and this is a good thing!) and that the ho bag is a decent price for a brand new machine, not to mention that your average consumer knows that 8.5 Grand for a 14 year old bike is a rip off.

Why someone would want to spend that much on such an old machine is beyond me. If thats the market value because crazy people want to go fast in their first year riding then thats business I guess. Couldn't sell it myself though, to much of a socialist.
Like Warlock I also ride a 250 on a full license but only parted with 6 G for something brand spanking, piece of mind and hell it goes fast enough for me. Still would have liked a brand new 400 or 500 twin though if they still existed. For whatever reason I just couldn't buy a second hand motorbike, had to be new.

I don't see the problem. They aren't bending people over. Sounds to me that if they can get away with those kinds of prices then there must be plenty of people out there who are more than willing to do all of the bending completely unassisted. Power to them.

While in Auckland the other day for work, the missus and I did the bike shop thing and spotted that ZXR250 in green. I was quite impressed with the standard of finish of the paint job, and took some time to work out just what it was. Yes it has the new Kawasaki Green and the new style badging, but not ZX10R , but ZX2R if my memory serves me correctly. Yes I was a little stunned at the price though for an older bike, but in all fairness, a classic machine in very good cosmetic nick! ...and I reckon if they made em new like that they would walk out the door 10 times faster than a Hyosung or their GPX? BTW...(I have 2 Hyos and a Ducati 900ss).
I would also like to add that the sales people there were friendly and appeared knowledgeable in assisting my missus look for a bike.
The other place that impressed us was Cycletreads on Barrys Point Road. Very helpful lady there too. Not so impressed with the other shops we went to...

If you want to get into bikeshops and isane prices you need to realise they have been doing it forever.
Eg front flushmount indicators for a zx6rr $87 each. Now i got mine on ebay for $65nzd for the full front set inc P&P.
If people pay it, they will ask for it. If i was running a buisness i would be trying to get as much coin as i could get my grubby lil hands on.
Cant blame them realy.

Asking this amount of coin for these bikes is BS! Hence why I chose an Prilly RS250 for $7,000 from a bike shop down the line with only 7000kms on it.
Im paying dearly for it though, thirstier in fuel than my mates R1 plus I have oil on top of that!

I'm guessing your not a business student Mark? I'm not either, but I know if I can sell a bike for $8.5k I'll bloody do it. Bike retailers aren't charity organisations.

Sounds dramatic (but why am I not surprised?). Over priced bikes = child rape?

I dont see what the problem is. If you want to buy it offer them what you think its worth, if they think its a fair price they'll take it. Your not being forced to buy it are you ?

Oh and another thing,
Yesturday as most Aucklanders will know was host to a big ass storm. I was caught in it, thunder and lightning, p!ssing down rain and hail bouncing off my headlight and hitting me square in the visor.
Anyway a young guy 18-19 was parked in the bus lane of the nor westurn mway. I pull over because lets face it in not gunna get any weter my leathers were soaked. Hes got this old ass GSXR mid 90's maybe, but it was showing every year. It had been over as the left hand side was all rashed up. It had 30,000kms on the clock and by the look of all the oil dripping out of his can was prone to oiling up plugs. Turns out he was test riding it, still had the dealer plates on.
So he rings the shop and they are on there way in a thunderstorm during rush hour. He tells me the shop wants 5k for the beat up, old, tired POS.
All i can say is thank god i dont have to buy another 250cc.

that hail yestrday was wicked thought my windscreen was gonna break
i dont realy think those bikes are that overpriced ad it up 4-5 k for a decent il4 250 then pay someone the going rate 50? 60? bucks an hour to pull it apart and paint every thing + paint ,a set of tires service it etc adds up
Sure you could do it cheaper yourself but not every one wants/could do the work

Its a rip off you can get an RS250 with less ks, shitloads of two-stroke HP plus italian styling for less than that. There's some on trade-me and a guy in Te Awamutu has three of them.
I imported my RS250 myself. I know its a risk buying it before riding it but I'm confident I can fix it if starts going wrong. Its got less than 10,000ks on it so I am a lot more confident about it than a bike with 38,000ks, even if it is a two-stroke
(unless the odo has been wound back or disconnected, but from the condition of the rest of the bike I don't think this has happened)

25th September 2007, 21:30
yes it is a shit load for a old zxr250 just trying to point out that if you bought one cheaper but a bit scruffy it would probly not be far off in total cost to get it to that state if you paid for all the work
lots of people dont like the sound or smell of two strokes or having to kicktart them noot that its very hard
personaly if i had the cash and was buying a 250 i would be seriously looking at a rs250 awsome looking bikes but i dont have the cash so bought a rg150 its only done 380kms haha and cost around a 1/4 of that kwaka
