CBR idel issue

Hi all

I posted a little bit about this in the electrical forum but it is best answered here. I am having problems with my low end power. Recently my CBR 600F (1998) would not hold an idle so i turned up the idle screw to solve this problem. However, I notice that if I sit with the bike at idle (like at the lights) and I accelerate I am getting a bit of lag and coughing of the engine. it is almost like a bit of crap in the carb. It is running fine at medium and high revs.

Anyone have any clues?

Not yet, I am not really confident on this machine to go carb cleaning. I will have a look but unlike dirt bike you seem to need to remove half the bike to get at anything. I have a warrant coming up so may get the lads to have a look see.

Could be many things - if it was me I'd start with a full service including setting valve clearances and new plugs before I started hauling off carbs etc.

Cheers. Yeah, it is due for its 25K full service. Trouble is I am selling it in two months so don't really want to shell out $600. Will see what the techies have to say initially and may have to speak to the new proposed owner about a cost share.

Don't you worry about that - I am selling it to a mate who has already said they will do the 25K service once they buy it cause I was only going to do it if i was keeping it (they just can't have it yet as i need it for work). They will be keen as if i chip in for it (and so i should if it needs the idle looked at).

You'd be better off taking $300 off the price, and wiping your hands of it. Then everybody knows where they stand :)

Yeah, we'll see. I am not trying at all to be sneaky so we will just see what needs to be done then discuss it with him. I have no concerns, it is not going to break the bank (touch wood) and i need it to a least keep running for the next couple of months. It could be as simple as water in the fuel or shitty plugs.

Yep, could be. There's a few good threads on getting the water out if you search around. The only difficult bit about draining the float bowls is getting to them :)

Well I found the issue! It was all rather simple really, the battery (which was causing starting issues) was so shagged that when I was at lights at idle there was so much current drain from the brake light and head light that because the battery was shagged it wasn't allowing enough current to fire the plugs properly. We put in a new batterty and all fixed:clap:
