Concern about rear tyre - particularly for sprints

So, I'm pretty keen on doing the sprints at the weekend (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=53468) but have some concerns about my rear.

It's shagged. Not 'down to the belts' shagged, but almost no tread on the thinnest bit shagged. Also, either the tyre or the valve is leaking - again, not terrifyingly bad, but 35psi down to 25psi in about a week. I do appreciate it needs changing, but was hoping to do the sprints on it first - partially because I'm a tightarse but also because I hope to get some idea about whether or not I should change the front sprocket (+1 tooth) at the same time and hitting the rev limiter at the sprints would decide that pretty quickly. However, I'm very keen on not having the tyre go pop, or even leave the rim at 200k. :no:

Does anyone have any idea as to whether or not this could happen? Is likely to?

personaly i would change it you mite bee a tightarse but could be a sorearse if the poverbial happens at 200kms. have fun at the sprints:Punk::done:

what sort of tyre? battleax or similar i presume. it shouldn't let go, but it will be ultra thin, and ultra-suspectible to a puncture. i rode back from coromandel on a BT010 that had some cords showing when i left, and were fully exposed when i got home (200km). i rode pretty quickly, didn't accelerate heavily in a straight line, but took the bike on the trailer to road and sport for the new tyre. was shocked at how thin (paper thin) the tyre was when it was taken off. never again!

That was lucky. Scrutineers would have rejected it if it wouldn't have passed a warrant, and made it a wasted trip.

The rears start delaminating, tearing strips of rubber off when you get down to the carcass layer of rubber, very dangerous for you and others around you.
You shouldn't be even asking on this thread, but well scored on the free rubber.

I shouldn't be asking? I shouldn't come to a bikers website and ask about safety issues regarding tyres in the "bike mechanics/brakes-wheels-tyres" forum? Strange. I wasn't meaning to appear and openly scrounge either. Hmmm.

None the less, due to the IMMEASURABLE AWESOMENESS of Drew I now have a pre-loved M3 and associated tractiony goodness. Oh, sweet traction, how I love thee.
