"The eruption occured about 8.15pm.

The Desert Road and National Park road have both been closed.

GNS Science Duty volcanologist Craig Miller told Radio NZ the eruption was unexpected, a "blue sky eruption".

He said there was no warning before the eruption and the crater lake was cold. "

Which just goes to show; you can't predict what Mother N has up her sleeve.

The Herald jumped on this one pretty quickly. Something differant from all the doom and gloom stories that's going on like another one of Sue Bradford's kids getting murdered.

In typical Herald style, they started off implying that half of the North Island had perished but was then downgraded to a ski lift operator who broke a fingernail but thourough investigation found that this incident was unrealted. Its now changed to "Skiers flee". I didn't know that people skied at 8:30 in the evening.

Edit: Oops, got that one wrong. A rock fell on someone while they were sleeping. Broke his legs.
