These guys are NUTS. Check out the open-face helmets and complete lack of proper gear.
It's stupid behaviour like this that'll have the Americans up in arms and banning these damn dangerous two-wheeled contraptions, if you ask me.

Ahh, I saw a tank cam video of a guy on an R1, doing about 260kmph, barely missing cars, and trucks, and wheeling.
He had style
But alas, no brains

Very very stupid. How on earth can they have organised races like that??? Wonder how many people get hurt/killed in that event.

You do realise that they are doing nothing different from every other of their working days? Such is being a cycle courier in NYC. That fact that it's a race means their actually having some fun, instead of the usual risking it all for minimum wage.
Good on 'em I say.
Would you see me doing it? HELL NO.

Well I suppose it's no worse than the guys in many countries delivering pizzas on scooters/motorbikes and go up on the foot paths etc when the road gets 2 crowded.

You got to remember the reason the cycle courier is still so popular in NYC is because it can get there quicker. I've also heard that they are often under time limits to deliver. So waiting for traffic/pedistrians just ain't going to happen.

Mate I think you need to find a new job with High Speed Internet, that's what I do. Only have lowly dialup at home but being able to download a CD in 8 minutes at work makes up for it :)

Nothing special about that - used to do it on m/bikes for a living in london. Racing the cycles used to be hard because they could get thru tighter gaps.
If its like london they probably have a 15 minute pickup and 15 min delivery time as well.
I would suggest that it would be suicidal at best to try it here. NZ roads have too much open space which means the unpredictable cagers do silly moves more frequently and faster. In NYC and London the traffic density makes it very hard for them to do daft things.
Also I should point out that newbie couriers have a very high death rate during the first 6 months or so. Takes a while to get those kind of skills. I find that in my old age I get quite angry and stressed when I see non professionals doing things like that now.

why the stress? lane splitting at speed simply requires a great deal of alertness, good equipment and constant practice.... and a bit of luck! It certainly takes me a few days to get back into it during my commute if I go away and i'm not riding in traffic
